The Winder Fire Department's Fire Awards Banquet was held
Oct. 25 at the Winder Community Center. The following awards
were given:

The Winder Fire Department held its annual fire pre
vention banquet on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Winder
Community Center located at 113 East Athens Street

Recent Barrow County criminal sentences handed down
The Barrow County
Superior Court recently sen
tenced the following people.
Those charged and their sen

•a civil matter on Kendall Park Drive, Winder.
A woman reported that her sister gave away
some baby furniture to a neighbor after the items
being given to her to use for a child and she
wants the items returned to her.
•burglary on Blueberry Lane, Winder. Two
male roommates reported that someone entered
their residence through an unlocked door and
stole the following items: a Samsung 24”
flatscreen TV valued at $400 dollars, a Macbook
laptop valued at $500, a CPU base unit, which
was attached to a silver TV and a keyboard val
ued at $350, an Epson projector valued at $250
and a flat screen TV with an unknown make or
value. A deputy advised the men that extra patrol
would be requested for the residence.
•a 911 hang up on Atlanta Highway SE,
Winder. The homeowner said that the numbers
on her phone tend to stick and she accidentally
dialed 911 when she was attempting to place
another phone call.
•obstructing a 911 call on Russell Cemetery
Road, Winder. A man and his wife got in an argu
ment at their home. Verbal statements from the
couple’s three juvenile children led a deputy to
arrest the man on an obstruction charge because
the children said they all saw their father take
their mother’s phone away as she was calling
911.
•criminal damage to property on Whispering
Pines Road, Winder. A man called police to
report someone he had a Temporary Protective
Order against him on his property. A responding
deputy found a black Cadillac parked in front of
the house with scratches in the paint along the
entire driver’s side. The estimated repair cost was
more than $500.
•a DUI-alcohol on Harrison Mill Road, Winder.
A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a white Jeep
Cherokee for failure to maintain lane. According
to the incident report, subsequent investigation
led to the arrest of the driver for DUI- Alcohol
less safe and failure to maintain lane. The driver
was arrested and taken to the Barrow County jail.
His vehicle was left on the scene at his request.
•a verbal dispute on Punkin Junction Road,
Winder. A woman said she was visiting her sister
when they got in an argument and began pushing
the other away. A deputy wrote that both parties
were under the influence of alcohol and it was
impossible to determine who was the antagonist
in the dispute.
•battery on Highway 82, Statham. A woman
said her boyfriend accused her of stealing,
knocked her down, hit her on the head, and
stole $30 cash from her purse. She had visible
bruises on her forehead and scratches on her
arms, although a deputy reported that the wounds
looked several days old. The deputy talked to the
boyfriend who said that he caught her stealing
and he told her to leave his house. The woman
reportedly told him, “I am going to get you now.
The cops are going to arrest you.” The man did
not want to press charges against the woman.
•theft by receiving stolen property on Manger
Avenue, Bethlehem. A 27-year-old man was
arrested after giving a deputy several different
false accounts and being in possession of a stolen
item that belonged to his neighbors.
•a recovered vehicle on Giles Road, Winder.
The owner of a 1993 Ford Ranger who reported
the vehicle stolen on Sept. 29,2011, reported that
the vehicle was found parked in the driveway of
his home with the keys in the seat. Apparently,
the man loaned the vehicle to someone who did
not return it.
•a 911 hang up on Foxdale Road, Winder. A
woman said her baby was playing with the cord
less phone and she found it off the hook.
•criminal trespass on Mill Brook Lane,
Hoschton. A man reported he suspects his for
mer mother-in-law and ex-wife of entering his
residence, although nothing in the residence was
disturbed.
•theft by receiving stolen property on Atlanta
Highway, Winder. A 31-year-old man was
arrested after a deputy pulled his vehicle over
for failure to maintain its lane and inoperable
tag lights. It was determined the vehicle’s tag
was confirmed stolen out of Americus Police
Department. The man was taken to the Barrow
County jail.
•a request for documentation on Oakdale
Drive, Auburn. A woman told a deputy she left
her husband of 23 years and has since noticed
him riding by her new residence. A deputy told
the woman it was not illegal for her husband to
ride down a public road.
•criminal trespass on Highway 211, Winder.
The owner of 15 acres of property reported that
he suspects someone is hunting on his property
without permission. He asked a deputy to find
the hunters and ask them to leave. The deputy
met with two hunters, who said they received
permission from the owner to hunt on the prop
erty and provided a written statement from the
owner reportedly drafter in 2005 granting per
mission. The deputy returned the document to
the property owner who said he had signed the
paper, but thought it had to be renewed every
year. The property owner told the hunters that he
did not want anyone to hunt on the property any
longer. The deputy served both hunters prohib
ited entry forms and were asked to remove two
deer stands and not to return.
•a theft by taking at Wal-Mart on Atlanta
Highway. A woman said she noticed her cell
phone was missing out of her purse while she
was shopping in the children’s clothing section
of the store. She said she needed the incident
documented to report to her service carrier in
order to replace the phone.
•terroristic threats and acts on Cardinal Lane,
Winder. A woman reported her daughter over
heard her other daughter’s boyfriend say he
wished her whole family was dead over the
phone. The woman said the boyfriend has been
nothing but trouble since her daughter started
dating him. A deputy suggested that the woman
look into getting a protective order against the
boyfriend if she felt threatened.
•a probation violation on Pressley Road,
Winder. A man summoned a deputy to report
he saw someone in the bed of his pickup track,
but nothing had been stolen or damaged. A K9
unit responded to assist with searching for the
person in question. The dog tracked a trail to a
Creekwood Court residence, where a 37-year-
old man had an active warrant for probation vio
lation (original charge: burglary) out of Walton
County.
•a burglary on Doc McLocklin Road, Statham.
A man reported he came home to find the doors
to his residence and his outside laundry room
open. The following items were missing: a metal
toolbox with hand tools, valued at $100, two gold
tone watches with metal elastic bands valued at
$12 a piece, a 32” flat screen TV and its remote
valued at $400, a double barrel 12-gauge shotgun
valued at $100, a .22 caliber single shot rifle
valued at $100, a bolt action 16-gauge shotgun
valued at $100 and a .38 caliber revolver valued
at $125. A deputy suggested the man change his
locks and add a dead bolt to his door and pos
sibly look into an alarm system.
•battery family violence on Bankhead Highway,
Winder. A 30-year-old man was arrested after his
20-year-old stepdaughter told a deputy he struck
her with a belt. The woman had obvious welts
on her leg. The man was taken to the Barrow
County jail.
•accidental damage to property at Chevron gas
station on Kilcrease Road, Auburn. A Greenville
man said he was driving a tractor-trailer around
the left side of the building, misjudged the clear
ance and hit the side of the building. A deputy
wrote that part of the outside wall was destroyed
and the cement blocks on the inside of the wall
were also damaged and broken.
•simple assault at Harco Equipment Rental
on Atlanta Highway, Winder. A customer and
a service manager had a dispute over damaged
equipment. No charges were taken due to con
flicting statements.
