Barrow County Sheriff's
officials held special training
sessions last week designed
to equip area patrol officers
with high-risk vehicle assault
tactics.
The new type of training
was initiated in response
to the unfortunate death of
Clayton County sheriff’s dep
uty Richard Joseph “Rick”
Daly. Daly was executing a
traffic stop to arrest a man on
a warrant for a 2010 armed
robbery when he was shot to
death on July 20.
Sgt. David Aderhold, cur
rent training director for the
Barrow County Sheriff’s
Office and former SWAT
commander for the DeKalb
County Sheriff’s Office, led
the instruction Oct. 25 and
27.
Officers with the Forsyth
County Sheriff’s Office,
Gwinnett County Sheriff’s
Office, Oconee County
Sheriff’s Office, Suwanee
Police Department and
Norcross Police Department
joined Barrow County sher
iff’s officials for the training.
Assaults on police are
evidently on the rise, said
Aderhold. Because of that
deputy’s death, authorities are
now not only training SWAT
officers, but patrol officers,
as well.
Training participants went
through several different role
playing scenarios, each act
ing as officers and perpetra
tors while using a sheriff’s
office sport utility vehicle in a
Bankhead Highway, Winder,
lumber yard. Plastic training
guns were used, as well.
Officers learned exactly
what to say to a suspect if he
cooperates in order to get him
outside of a vehicle and into
handcuffs. Or, if the perpetra
tor doesn’t comply with ver
bal commands, officers were
told to pepper spray or even
Tase their suspects.
Training participants addi
tionally learned what to do
when they first hear of a high-
risk scenario over the radio
and how to report a vehicle
assault incident.
Making sure there is no ini
tial threat is vital.
“Justifying our actions” is
how Aderhold phrased deci
phering whether it is worth
taking a criminal down in a
vehicle.
“This is definitely advanced
new training for officers that
have not been taught except
for SWAT,” he said.
A Forsyth County sher
iff’s deputy who could not
be identified said he found
the vehicle assault training
applicable from a Narcotics
perspective.
“It’s good to know,” he
said.
Other participants said they
would bring the training back
to their own agencies and
incorporate it into uniform
training for their officers.
“It’s interesting,” Sgt.
Dwayne Black with Suwanee
police, said. “Any training is
good training.”
A 29-year-old Winder man
was arrested after a woman
reported to police that he
entered her East Wright
Street residence, sat on her
couch, exposed his genitals
and began to masturbate.
Officers met with the com
plainant at the “Big H” food
store on King Street, where
the woman told police that
she told the man to leave
and called 911 immediately
after the man entered her
home, according to an inci
dent report.
The man, identified as
Tashun Bradley, of 254
Griffith St., reportedly left
the woman’s house shortly
after the incident.
The incident report does
not specify whether the
victim knew the man who
entered her home. However,
the woman reportedly told
officers the suspect made a
statement regarding “her cur
rent boyfriend.”
Authorities caught up with
Bradley shortly after meet
ing with the complainant on
East Wright Street near King
Avenue.
Asked if he had any weap
ons or other dangerous items
in his pockets, he responded
with “I have two guns and
two blunts,” according to the
report.
As one officer attempted
to take Bradley into custody,
he fled on foot. They even
tually caught up with him
and an officer reported kick
ing Bradley in his thigh due
to his refusal to obey com
mands.
Bradley dropped to his
feet, but reportedly attempt
ed to throw a punch at an
officer’s head. Two more
officers joined in the strug
gle and Bradley was finally
apprehended.
After he was secured in
handcuffs, a search turned
up no weapons or illegal sub
stances on Bradley’s person.
Officers carted him back to
the “Big H” where the vic
tim positively identified him
as the man who previously
entered her home.
Bradley was taken to the
Barrow County Detention
Center where he was charged
with city citations of unlaw
ful entry, public indecen
cy and obstruction of law
enforcement.
WINDER INCIDENTS
In other incidents, Winder
police reported:
•reckless driving on West
Athens Street. A 19-year-
old man was arrested for
first degree reckless driving
after an officer observed him
pass a car at the Battle of
Barrow event in the Holly
Hill Shopping Center last
week. According to an inci
dent report, the man’s truck
passed a car that had slowed
down while steering hard
left, accelerating heavily
and spinning a rear tire. The
truck then sped across the
parking lot towards Sunoco
steering between parked cars
and pedestrians attending the
function. After his arrest, the
man told the officer he had
an argument with his girl
friend and he was sorry for
his actions.
•a probation violation war
rant on Capital Avenue at
American Legion. A 28-year-
old man was arrested on
an active probation viola
tion warrant and taken to the
Barrow County jail.
•criminal trespass at
Remy’s Oriental on West
Athens Street. The store’s
owner reported an attempted
burglary after she arrived at
her business to find the front
lock was damaged, although
entry was not made to the
store. An officer went to the
door and observed the cir
cular lock mechanism was
completely removed from
the door. There was no other
damage to the door and the
door was locked due to a
double lock system. The
owner suspected a young
man who had been in the
area for the past few days
who has asked her questions
about when she opens and
closes her business.
•information on Graham
Street. An officer was dis
patched in reference to
a report of road rage at
Highway 53 and Highway
11 near Barrow Regional
Medical Center. Two women
claimed they were cut off by
one another where the two
roads merge. The complain
ant told the officer that she
was behind the other woman
driving down North Broad
Street honking her horn and
waving her hands. She said
that she followed the other
woman’s vehicle while on
the phone with 911 down to
a Glenwood area apartment
complex. According to the
officer’s report, both driv
ers had contradicting stories.
The officer told them he did
not witness a crime, there
fore he could not write any
citations for reckless driving,
speeding, etc. Both drivers
stated that they just wanted
to notify police of the situa
tion. The complainant addi
tionally told the officer that
he could look at her driver’s
history record and it would
be clean. She also said that
an officer should believe her
story because of where she
lives as opposed to where the
other driver lives.
•a warrant service on North
Broad Street at Mimosa
Street. An officer on patrol
saw a man he knew had a
warrant for his arrest out
of Barrow County for pos
session of marijuana riding
in the passenger seat of a
2000 Dodge Neon. The offi
cer conducted a traffic stop
and arrested the man. The
driver of the car also had a
warrant out of Henry County
for failure to appear on traf
fic charges. She, too, was
arrested. A vehicle search
was conducted after a posi
tive K-9 alert, but nothing
was found. Both parties were
taken to the Barrow County
jail.
•information on University
Parkway, Lawrenceville. An
officer was dispatched to the
Gwinnett County Sheriff’s
Office to pick up a 30-year-
old woman who was being
held for the City of Winder
on probation warrants.
However, upon checking the
Winder Police Department
system, the officer wrote in
his report that he learned the
warrant had been recalled.
The woman was released due
to the lack of a valid arrest
warrant and given her prop
erty back, then allowed to
use the telephone and con
tact someone to pick her up.
•a suspended license third
offense on Griffith Street
at East Wright Street. A
33-year-old woman was
arrested after an officer on
patrol who knew her license
was suspended saw her
driving a 1998 Chevrolet
Blazer. According to an
incident report, the officer
knew the woman’s license
was suspended because he
arrested her several months
ago for a suspended license
and numerous felony drug
charges. The officer con
ducted a traffic stop. When
the woman told the officer
she did not have a license,
he told her he knew it was
suspended. The woman was
arrested and taken to the
Barrow County jail.
•disorderly conduct on
Ryan Road. Two men were
cited after an officer was
dispatched to a report of a
possible assault. A man said
he was in the front yard with
his family when a second
man drove by his home at a
high rate of speed. The first
man said he shouted at the
second man to slow down,
at which point the man in
the car put his hand out the
window and “gave him the
bird,” according to an inci
dent report. Evidently, the
man in the car turned his
vehicle around and drove
back toward the first man.
The first man’s father called
the police after the man in
the car supposedly struck
him in the face. The officer
wrote that the man did have
a small cut on his lower lip.
Not being able to determine
a primary aggressor, both
men were cited for disor
derly conduct.
•damage to property on
West Williams Street. A
76-year-old woman called
police after someone back
ing out of her neighbors’
driveway apparently struck
her mailbox for the third
time. The woman said she
is unsure if it is her neigh
bor or another visitor to his
residence, but she noticed
it was pushed out of place.
An officer wrote in an inci
dent report that the mailbox
was leaning to one side. He
helped the woman reset it in
its proper place.
•an abandoned vehicle on
Mossy Trace. A woman said
she noticed a white 1998
Chevrolet Tahoe outside
of her residence when she
opened her garage door to
start her car. The doors to
the vehicle were locked. It
was towed.
•speeding on North Broad
Street. A 36-year-old man
was arrested after a city of
Winder Police H.E.A.T. Unit
clocked a white Isuzu Rodeo
traveling 60 miles per hour
in a 45 mile per hour zone on
Ga. Highway 53. The man’s
license turned out to be sus
pended in May of 2010.
•warrant arrest on Barrow
Park Drive. An officer called
the BCDC to verify that a
woman who was sentenced
by a municipal court judge
to serve 11 days had turned
herself in on the day she was
sentenced.
