With the offseason now just
around the corner, the Winder-
Barrow High School football
team hopes to use its final
game of 2011 as a starting
block.
The Bulldoggs (0-9) travel
to Cedar Shoals High School
in Athens Friday hoping to
record their first win of 2011
and its initial victory since
2009. By doing so, coach
David Wagner said it would
help generate needed enthu
siasm for the offseason pro
gram.
“We’ve made tremendous
improvements in several areas
since we started,” Wagner said
recently. “That’s what we will
continue to focus on.”
WBHS is coming off a
disappointing 47-0 loss to
Apalachee High School last
week in the Battle of Barrow.
The Bulldoggs struggled
offensively in the contest.
A1 Schotter leads the team
in tackles with 91.5 overall,
including 50.5 solo and 41
assists. Schotter also had 3.5
sacks. Levi Worley enters
Friday’s game with 62.5 total
tackles, including 36.5 solo
and 26 assists.
Kickoff Friday is set for
7:30 p.m.
Winder-Barrow @ Cedar Shoals
•The Game: Winder-Barrow @ Cedar Shoals, Region
8-AAAA contest
•Records: Winder-Barrow 0-9 overall, 0-9 in Region
8-AAAA, Cedar Shoals 4-5 overall, 4-5 in Region
8-AAAA
•Last Meeting: Cedar Shoals won 26-0 in 2010
•Last week: WBHS lost to Apalachee 47-0; Cedar
Shoals defeated Madison County 35-18
•Coaches: WBHS, David Wagner, second season;
Cedar Shoals, Dreco Thomas, first season
• Key Players: WBHS: QB Christian Hodge; DL Tyler
Pineda; WR Dante Jones; RB Jamonte Riden; Cedar
RB Adrian Washington, DL Ricky Clarke, HB Rodney
Willingham
• Items of Note: The Bulldoggs have one final chance
to get into the win column for 2011. WBHS has struggled
in recent weeks offensively and it will be vital for the
Bulldoggs to be able to generate some points against
the Jaguars. Cedar Shoals could finish the season 5-5
with a win, but would still miss out on the playoffs as
Habersham Central has the No. 4 seed from Region
8-AAAA.

Sorrells, in preparing for this week’s contest, also noticed
Garrett likes to throw to his tight end a good bit.
“They run multiple things but their two favorite plays seem
to be a power kick play and the zone read option.” Sorrell said.
“Not only will it be a challenge to get lined up correctly to all
of their formations, but then we will have to find a way to bottle
up their host of running backs and the quarterback, something
teams have straggled to do all year.”
Offensive coordinator Joel Miller also knows this week’s
game will be a challenge.
“They are big, strong, and physical,” Miller said. “They will
base out of the 4-3, but give a lot of different looks up front with
their defensive line and linebackers. They are fundamentally
sound and well coached. They do not seem to get out of position
a lot. They have an explosive and complicated offense, so we
must do a good job and controlling the clock and putting points
on the board when given opportunites. We are looking forward
to the challenge.”
Apalachee has a chance to close out the season with a 5-1
record after starting the campaign 0-4. That’s a fact that makes
Davis proud of his players.
“I’m awfully proud of our kids,” Davis said. “We dug our
selves a hole early. However, we are closing out the season
playing well. We had a bad taste in our mouth last year after
finishing 1-3 in our last four games. We were 0-4 this season
with every opportunity to hang our heads. We had high expeca-
tions coming into this season and we will always have those.
The next thing you know we are 0-4. Our kids have showed a
lot of character by having a chance to win five of our last six
games. I think that would be a huge step for us, regardless of
whether we get in the playoffs. We have fought hard and come
back to play with a lot of passion. We are playing like a playoff
team right now. When you start a season the way we did, that’s
hard to do.”

rushing for a career high 216 yards with four touch
downs. Two LHS running backs also surpassed the 100-
yard mark.

Barrow Journal reporter saves citizens
over $2 million
Because Barrow Journal reporter Susan Norman kept digging through the

Barrow taxpayers from a major tax hike and resolved weeks of problems that
the Barrow County government had been dealing with.
Winder's voter-list gets re-examined thanks
to the Barrow Journal
Due to a tip, the Barrow Journal learned that the Winder city government was
planning to challenge 40% of its registered voter list, around 3,000 names.
But the Journal found that the list was rife with errors and had not been done
correctly by city officials. Because of the resulting news coverage, the city
went back and did the list over again using better criteria and the final
challenge list was under 200 people. Because of the Journal's digging,
hundreds of voters were saved the time and trouble of having to prove their
status in the upcoming November 8 elections.
