Kitten Adoption Day
at Tractor Supply
Leftover Pets, Barrow’s new
low cost spay/neuter clinic,
will host kitten adoptions at the
Tractor Supply store in Winder
on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 10
a.m. until 2 p.m.
The adoption fee is only $25.
All of the kittens have been
spay/neutered, tested for FeLV/
FIV, microchipped, dewormed
once and have had one FVRCP
vaccination. They are all res
cues from euthanasia at Barrow
County Animal Control. If
these are adopted. Leftover can
save more lives next week.
Car Show to benefit
AHS Motor Masters Club
The Motor Masters, a com
munity service oriented motor
club at Apalachee High School,
is hosting an all-vehicle show
on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 1-5
p.m. at the school.
Proceeds will be used to fund
the group’s activities, which
include rebuilding an Acura to
donate to Peace Place, Barrow’s
domestic violence shelter.
Currently 100 cars and 80 other
vehicles are entered.
Drive-ins are welcome on the
day of the show. A $10 entry
fee registers a vehicle to be
judged in one of 10 categories.
Vehicles can be displayed, not
judged, for free.
The judging is at 4 p.m. and
trophies will be awarded. There
will also be food for sale and

Dr. Skelton book
signing set Nov. 14
Dr. C.B. Skelton, local author
and Winder’s own poet laure
ate, will hold a signing for his
latest book, “A Simple Seller
of Noodles,” on Sunday, Nov.
13 from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at
Constance Manor in Winder.
The book tells the true story
of a Cambodian refugee who
came to Winder, raised his
family and built a successful
restaurant business. Constance
Manor is located at 70 Church
St. in Winder.
Leftover Pets announces
upcoming spay/neuter dates
Leftover Pets offers low cost
spay/neuter surgeries every
other week at their clinic in
Winder (610 Barrow Park
Drive). More than 400 animals
have been spayed/neutered
since the Barrow clinic opened
in May.
Upcoming dates include
Nov. 14, 15, 28 and 29. Prices
are $75 for a female dog over
25 lbs, $60 for a female dog up
to 25 lbs, $50 for a male dog,
$50 for a female cat, $30 for
a male cat. All surgery prices
include a free rabies vaccina
tion for pets ages 12 weeks and
older. Leftover Pets does not
add fees for in heat or pregnant
animals.

ond cat fixed for free. The free
surgery must be of equal or
lesser value.
Rabies vaccinations are
always included for free with
surgery if the animal is over 12
weeks of age.

Holiday Market at
Hoschton Depot
Local artisans, Craig &
Kathleen Gill of Winder, will
host the fourth annual Hoschton
Holiday Market at the depot in
Hoschton on Hwy. 53.
The Market will be open on
Friday, Nov. 11. from 2 to 7
p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12 from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday,
from noon until 4 p.m.
The intimate Market will
feature ten area artisans and
entrepreneurs bringing their
finest holiday gift ideas to the

Christmas Toy Drive
To help ensure that every
child in Barrow County gets
a gift this Christmas, Barrow
County Family Connection
is sponsoring the first annual
Holiday Harvest 5K Run/Walk
on Friday, Nov. 11.
Proceeds will benefit Holiday
Connection, a local program
that provides gifts for children
whose families are having trou
ble making ends meet.
Corporate and/or private
sponsorships for the race are
available. The race will start
and finish at W. Clair Harris
Stadium, Winder-Barrow High.

Habitat hosting
spaghetti dinner
Barrow County Habitat for
Humanity is having a Spaghetti
Dinner fundraiser on Saturday,
Nov. 12 at the Lions Club in
Winder, from 5 until 7 p.m.
Plates, which include spaghetti,
salad, bread and a drink, are
$7.
After the dinner, a live auc
tion will begin at 7 p.m. A
list of items to be auctioned

Bids can be submitted through

construction of Barrow’s 14th

Donations requested
for tree lighting event
The organizers of the
Celebrate the Holidays in
Braselton festival are seeking
donations from local business
es to include as door prizes
at the annual Lighting of the
Braselton Christmas Tree.
The event will be held on
Saturday, Nov. 12, and “door
prizes” will be given to attend
ees throughout the tree lighting.
Volunteers are seeking small
items for the giveaway for both
children and adults. The themes
are “Winter Wonderland” and
“Cars 2.” Those who provide a
prize will have their business or
product recognized in front of
all of those that attend.

Rape Crisis Center
to host open house
On Tuesday, Nov. 15, the
Piedmont Rape Crisis Center
will host an Open House just in
time to kick off the Christmas
shopping season.
From 6-9 p.m. at the Winder
Moose Lodge on Hwy. 211,
PRCC invites the public to
“come shop at your leisure”
from various vendors. Among
the products available are
items from Premier Jewelry,
Community Briefs
Pampered Chef, Avon-Mark,
Scentsy Candles, Thirty One,
Willow House-Miche and Buy-
Book-Back Raffles for addi
tional products.
The event will be set up in
the back meeting room of the
lodge, and parking is available
at the rear entrance.
PRCC Director, Susan Cash,
said that the organization is
continuously grateful to the
Moose Lodge for their ongo
ing support as a venue for their
benefit events.

will benefit the S.A.N.E. pro
gram, the Sexual Assault

Monthly food distribution
slated for Nov. 17
The monthly free food dis
tribution at the Barrow County
Cooperative Benevolence
Ministries (BCCBM) Mobile
Food Pantry will be on Thursday,
Nov. 17 and Thursday, Dec. 15,
which are the third Thursdays of
each month. The distribution is
usually on the fourth Thursday
of the month, but has been
moved due to the holidays. The
Mobile Pantry is at Holly Hill
Mall in Winder and begins at
9 a.m. Proof of Barrow County
residence is required.
Run for Hope
set for Nov. 19
The Second Annual Vineyard
Run for Hope 10.2 K, 5K and
IK Tot Trot will be held at
Chateau Elan, Braselton, on
Saturday, Nov. 19, with all pro
ceeds benefiting the Gwinnett
Children’s Shelter.
The 10.2 K will start at 7:30
a.m., the IK Tot Trot starts at
9 a.m. and the 5K begins at
9:30 a.m. Along the way, par
ticipants will enjoy views of
the vineyards at Chateau Elan,
stables, golf courses and estate
houses.
Entry fees are discounted for
those who register in advance.
The advance registration fee for
the IK Tot Trot is $15, the fee
is $30 for the 5K and the fee is
$40 for the 10.2K.
The Gwinnett Children’s
Shelter — which annually
serves more than 200 young
people residentially — grew
out of a volunteer effort involv
ing PTA, business and com
munity leaders who recognized
a need for services for abused
and abandoned children.
The shelter depends on com
munity donations to provide
its services, and the annual
Chateau Elan Tour of Homes
event and now the Vineyard
Run for Hope have been
among their largest fundrais
ers for several years. Over the
past nine years, the Chateau
Elan community has welcomed
thousands of visitors and raised
more than $1 million for the

plans meetings

support group meets every
fourth Tuesday of the month

als caring for someone with
Alzheimer’s Disease or related
dementias to fellowship with
other caregivers, participate
in educational programs, have
questions answered about your
loved one’s care, and gain
knowledge from health care
professionals.

niques and how to assist with
a fall.

AARP offers
driver safety class
Barrow County AARP
Chapter No. 3735 will offer
a driver safety class Tuesday,
Nov. 29, from 9 a.m. - 3:45
p.m. at the Barrow County
Leisure Services Center, 195
Second Street, Winder.
The course cost is $12 for
AARP members and $14 for
non-members. Payment is due
the morning of the class.
November is military month
and all military personnel are
eligible to take the class for free
with valid ID.
Participants may be eligible
to receive a discount on car
insurance upon completing the
course.

upcoming raffle
The Barrow County Senior
Center is planning an auction
on Thursday, Dec, 8, from 6
to 11 p.m. Raffle tickets for a
homemade afghan and a hand
made hunting knife are on sell
for $1 each and are available
for purchase at the center. The
drawing will be held the night
of the auction (do not have to
be present to win). Hot dog
plates and drinks will be avail
able for purchase.

Benefit scheduled
for Alex Richards
A benefit to help four-year-
old Alex Richards’ family pay
for the $20,000-$30,000 life
flight that saved his life on Oct.
1 will be held on Saturday,
Dec. 10 at the EZ Buy Chevron
on the corner of Hwy. 11 and
Rockwell Church Rd. Pork
butts smoked by Tom Dunahoo
are being pre-sold now and can
be ordered for $25. BBQ plates
at the event will be $7. Alex has
been diagnosed with leukemia
and is currently having chemo
therapy on a throat tumor. His
parents are Sherri and Mark
Richards; his sister, Julia, is 14.
The family lives in Bethlehem.

Food Pantry in
need of donations
The shelves at the local food
pantry are almost bare due to a
recent delay in local food stamp
processing and distribution.
Food pantry coordinators
are hoping businesses and/or
churches will sponsor emer
gency food drives to help meet
this urgent need. To facilitate
food distribution and cut down
on sorting time, pantry coor
dinators ask that larger donors
or food drive sponsors donate
bags or cases of a single item,
rather than a selection of items.
Monetary donations are also
welcome and are tax deduct
ible.
The food pantry, which is
located at 41 Candler St. in
Winder, is operated by the
Barrow County Cooperative
Benevolence Ministries
(BCCBM.)
Donations can be left at the
pantry just before 5:30 p.m.
or just after 6 p.m. A1 Brown,
the BCCBM Food Patnry
Coordinator, will also pick up
