4-H’ers compete at poultry judging contest
Which came first, the chicken or the
egg? It's a question that may never be
fully answered.
Both the chicken and its egg were the
subject of study for Barrow 4-H youth
recently. The 4-H’ers began studying
the chicken, its parts, its eggs, and the
methods of quality identification on
Jan. 31, and continued through compe
tition on April 8.
The 4-H'ers had to learn how to
judge a live chicken’s qualities, and
then explain their answers to an expert
judge from the University of Georgia
Poultry Science department. They also
had to be able to identify the parts of
the chicken and how to judge a ready to
cook specimen.
With the eggs, they learned the dif
ferent levels of grading for an egg (AA.
A. B and Inedible) and then applied
that knowledge to grading eggs in three
categories; broken out eggs, exterior
quality and candling. In addition to the
judging, the 4-H’ers also had to com
plete a general knowledge test about
chickens and eggs.
Barrow 4-H took two teams to com
petition. The senior team was com
prised of Winder-Barrow High School
student Courtney Bolden and Apalachee
High School students C.J. McLocklin,
Brandon Thomas and Cody Perkins.
The junior team was comprised of
Haymon-Morris Middle School stu
dents Donny Kulp and Alyssa Futter.
Russell Middle School student Alex
Rodriguez, County Line Elementary
School students Ivey Wall and Jesse
Rodriguez and Yargo Elementary
School student Hunter Perkins.
The Area Competition was held at the
Oglethorpe County Livestock Facility in
Crawford on Monday, April 8. At com
petition, the senior team placed third
out of seven teams and the junior team
placed fourth out of 10. Individually,
Courtney Bolden tied for eighth in
seniors and Donny Kulp placed fifth in
juniors.
