The Winder Housing
Authority, in partnership
with Bethlehem Church
and the WHA residential
council, welcome the com
munity to its First Annual
Big Father’s/Father Figure
Day Celebration 2013.
The event will be held on
Saturday, June 15, from 1-5
p.m. at the Winder Pavilion,
113 Athens Street. There
will be free music, food,
games and fun for all.
More than 200 public
housing authorities across
the country will host this
Father’s Day event as part
of a HUD Initiative to
reconnect fathers and their
children who live in pub
lic housing or surround
ing communities. This
in no way suggests that
HUD does not recognize
the critical importance of
mothers. The majority of
public housing households
with children are headed by
single women who earn less
than $9,000 annually, and
they do a tremendous job of
raising their children.
However, according to
statistics drawn from com
munities across the country,
children raised in absent
father families are more at-
risk for a host of negative
factors, including dropping
out of school. The focus on
Father’s Day is meant to
be a starting point; either
a celebration of existing
relationships or a reason to
form first connections.
According to informa
tion from the National
Fatherhood Initiative (www.
fatherhood.org), more than
24 million children, one out
of three nationally, live in
father-absent homes. These
children face increased
risks for poor outcomes
across every measure of
child well being.
Children from father-
absent homes are more
likely to:
•Be poor - eight percent
of children in married-cou
ple families live in poverty
compared to 42 percent of
children in female-house-
hold families.
•Be abused or neglected
- The overall rate of child
abuse and neglect in single
parent homes is almost two
times higher than in two-
parent households.
•Use drugs - No matter
their gender, age, income,
and race/ethnicity, adoles
cents not living with both
parents (biological or adop
tive) are 50 percent to 150
percent more likely to use
substances, to be depen
dent on substances, and to
need illicit drug treatment
than adolescents living with
both parents.
•Drop out of school -
Fatherless children are
twice as likely to drop out
of school.
•Commit crime - Children
from father-absent homes
are at least two times more
likely to become involved
in the criminal justice sys
tem.
•Suffer poorer physical
health outcomes - Infant
mortality rates nearly two
times higher for infants of
unmarried mothers than for
married mothers.
Children are welcome to
bring their father or father
figure (grandfather, uncle,
foster parent, stepfather,
close family friend or any
male figure in their life)
for an afternoon of games,
competitions, music, enter
tainment, food and more.
All children must be
accompanied by an adult.
‘Camp Invention ’ comes to Barrow County
A unique opportunity is available this summer in Barrow County: “Camp Invention.”
The Camp Invention program is a nationally acclaimed weeklong summer enrichment day
experience for children entering in grades one through six. The top priority of the Camp
Invention program is to provide quality enrichment programming in the fields of science,
mathematics, history and the arts.
Local schools host the program and the week’s hands-on activities are led by local teachers
to ensure a safe learning environment. The staff to child ratio is one teacher to every eight
students. The Camp Invention program enhances a child’s ability to learn through teamwork
and subject immersion while cultivating a new appreciation for discovery.
Camp Invention comes to Barrow County this summer on the Bethlehem Christian
Academy campus. Registration is open to the community. For more information, visit camp-
invention.org or call the BCA office at 770-307-1574.
