Statham Legion to
host Valentine’s event
The American Legion Post
163 in Statham will host a
Valentine’s dinner and dance
on Saturday, Feb. 13.
The event will be at Post
163 at 1633 Atlanta Hwy.,
SE, in Statham.
A pork chop dinner will be
served at 6 p.m. for $10 per
plate. A dance will be held
at 8 p.m. with tickets costing
$8.
The Big Don Band will
provide musical entertain
ment.
Chamber to host
annual awards dinner
The Barrow County
Chamber of Commerce will
host its 69th annual dinner
and celebration on Saturday,
Feb. 6, at Chateau Elan
Winery and Resort.
A reception will begin at
6 p.m. followed by dinner at
7 p.m. Individual tickets are
$90 per person.
Various sponsorships are
also available. A cash bar
will be available at the event,
chamber officials said. The
dress is business attire for
men and cocktail dress for
ladies.

Early voting begins Monday
Georgia Presidential Primary 2016

Barrow County voters can
begin casting their ballot in per
son for the 2016 presidential pri
mary on Monday as early voting
begins.
Advance voting will contin
ue through Friday, Feb. 26. All
advance voting will take place
Monday through Friday from 8
a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Barrow
County Elections Office. Saturday
voting will also be offered on Feb.
20 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

supervisor Monica Franklin said
Barrow County voters can verify
their registration and their polling
location by visiting the "My Voter
Page” at sos.ga.gov.
Voters will have to select either
a Republican or Democratic bal
lot. Voters are not required to reg
ister with one party in Georgia.
There will be 12 candidates on
the GOP ballot and four on the
Democratic ballot.
Georgia’s actual primary day is
Tuesday, March 1, one of several
days involved in a “Southeastern
Conference” event.
Absentee balloting actually
kicked off this year’s presidential
primary in Georgia. In Barrow
County, requests for absentee bal
lots began on Jan. 12. Franklin
said last week her office has
mailed 72 absentee ballots and
had received 25 completed bal
lots back. Some requests were
from military personnel stationed
overseas and a couple from citi
zens temporarily living out of the
country.

England s respect, ability to get the job
done expands far beyond Barrow County

T erry England’s influence has
long been known locally.
Now, Georgia Trend magazine recent
ly announced that England was select
ed as one of its 100 Most Influential
Georgians for the second year in a row.
England, who lives in Auburn with
his wife Cindy, was born and raised
in Barrow County. Terry and Cindy
were high school sweethearts and are
members of the First Baptist Church
of Auburn. England graduated from
Winder-Barrow High School in 1984
and later attended the University of
Georgia. He later decided to leave UGA
and begin working with his family’s
construction business. England’s father
owned a construction company, and
England worked alongside him. He later
began doing carpentry work and started
farming. England said he had been inter
ested in agriculture throughout his life
and enjoyed growing produce.
“Ag is my passion,” said England. “I
enjoy growing stuff and helping people
grow stuff.”
The Englands purchased Homeport
Farm Mart in 1998 and worked in the
farm supply retail industry for several
years. England said he enjoyed his time
at Homeport working with the commu
nity.
“I enjoyed working with folks,” said
England.
Homeport was named one of the
top young retailers of the year by the
National Retail Hardware Association
in 2002.

Winder Police to
receive pay raise

The Winder Police Department is getting
a raise this month. The Winder City Council
approved an increase in its pay schedule at its
Feb. 2 meeting.
The council’s public safety committee
recently met to discuss the pay increases
for the department’s employees. All full-time
employees in the department will receive a
raise beginning Feb. 11.
