FIGHTING THE CLOCK
AND THE CALENDAR
Road work continues
around the area of the new
Russell Middle School.
With the new school year
set to begin Monday, Aug.
1, city and school officials
don’t expect upgrades in
the area of McNeal Road
and Chandler Street to be
finished by the start of the
new school year as once
hoped. The Winder Police
Department and Barrow
County Sheriff’s Office will
help with traffic in the area
which will be extremely
congested with the new
RMS being close to Winder-
Barrow High School.

SPLOST is
re-approved
By Cliris Bridges
Journal Editor
Barrow County officials are
in the process of putting a
Special Purpose Local Option
Sales Tax referendum on the
November ballot.
If voters approve another
round of SPLOST collections,
Bethlehem officials will use
its portion mostly for addition
al road repair, mayor Sandy
McNab said this week.
McNab attended a meeting
with county and other munic
ipal officials last week and
updated Bethlehem council
members at their July meeting.
"They are going to try and
get it on the November ballot,”
the mayor said. “This way, if
it doesn’t get approved, there
will still be time for another
vote before this one expires in
2018.”
The current SPLOST,
approved by Barrow voters in
2011, expires June 30, 2018.
Bethlehem is set to collect
$531,576 from the current
SPLOST.
McNab said if the SPLOST
continues the mayor estimates
Bethlehem will use future
funds for needed road repair
along with any needed drain
age work.
The mayor said he would
continue updating the council
on future SPLOST meetings
with county officials.
Also at Monday’s meeting,
Bethlehem officials approved a
business license for Clear Lee
Washed, a window washing
operation.
Open House
set for new
RMS location
An open house is sched
uled for Friday, July 29, from
10 a.m. until noon for the
new Russell Middle School
facility. The new location, at
the corner of Candler and
McNeal, will be open for the
2016-2017 school year, which
begins Monday, Aug. 1.
