The Game Plan
Olympic games just around the comer
W e are only a few weeks away
from the 2016 Summer Olympic
Games. The Olympic Games are
always viewed by millions all over
the world, but as we get closer to
the Olympics it is interesting to
think about the reality that this
might be one of the most scruti
nized Olympic Games in history.
There is so much controversy
about this year’s Summer Games
being held in Brazil that it is
almost jeopardizing the integri
ty of the event. It might become
one of the least attended Olympic
Games in the history of the Olym
pics, and that is saying a lot when
you remember that there was a
Summer Olympic Games held in
Nazi Germany.
The country is unsettled, there are riots
on a weekly basis protesting different
social issues.
There are also huge concerns with dif
ferent labor issues within the country of
Brazil. The country spent billions of dol
lars on the 2014 World Cup two years ago
and is now doing the same thing for the
2016 Summer Olympics.
Aside from that, the Zika Virus has
many people worried about attending the
games. Both athletes, journalists and spec
tators are getting worried about traveling
to Brazil to attend, cover or be a part of
the games. And on top of that, some of
the competitions will take place in some
of Brazil’s polluted waters — which is
some of the most unsanitary waters on the
planet.
Needless to say, Brazil has got a lot
going on right now as the Summer Games
approach. Some countries’ athletes are
deciding not to stay at the Olympic Vil
lage, which is where Olympic athletes
reside during the games. There are a lot of
countries that are taking every precaution
necessary to protect their athletes from
different health risks.
One of the world powers in the Olympic
Games, Russia, has had a lot of
controversy over the last several
months.
Different reports have come
out about certain Russian Olym
pic Athletes doping and using
Performance Enhancing Drugs
(PEDs).
There were rumors that Rus
sia was going to be completely
disqualified from the Olympics,
but it turns out that just certain
athletes are going to have to face
punishment.
All that to say. the Olym
pics might turn into a complete
joke this summer. Don’t get me
wrong, a lot of people will tune in to watch
the Summer Games and cheer on the
athletes, but there is so much happening
in these games that the main focus of the
Olympics won’t even be on the athletes or
the competitions but everything else that
has already been mentioned.
While the Olympic Games are fun, I
would argue that most people really don’t
care. Most Americans get excited to cheer
on fellow Americans, not because they
want to watch sports like swimming, row
ing or any other Olympic Games that peo
ple only care about once every four years.
It will be interesting to see what the
turnout is for attendance at the Summer
Games and just how many people tune in
to watch their country compete. I’m not
anticipating low numbers in TV views,
but there may be low numbers in actual
attendance in Brazil over the few weeks
the Summer Games commence.
