WAITING FOR IT

Mill Creek advances on to
region championship game
BY BRANDON REED
The Mill Creek Lady Hawks
softball team continued their post
season winning ways last week
with a victory over Peachtree
Ridge, and continued on with a
second win over Collins Hill.
The team faced off against
Peachtree Ridge last Tuesday,
coming away with a 7-1 victory
over Peachtree Ridge.
Morgan Bullock got the victory,
giving up only four hits in seven
innings.
Five players, Amberlie Saxton,
Devin Dossman, Allie Millonig,
Ashleigh Hughes and Bullock,
each had two hits. Lauren Stimis
also made a diving catch in the
outfield to save a run, and Alex
Rogers had four quality at bats.
Mill Creek softball coach Kelly
Murdock said beating Peachtree
Ridge, who had defeated the
Lady Hawks 3-1 in their final
regular season game, was “defi
nitely rewarding.”
“We came out knowing that we
really wanted to win,” Murdock
said. “They left a sour taste in our
mouths. They’re a really good
team, so I was really proud of the
effort of our kids.”
Murdock said offensive adjust
ments made the difference in the
rematch.
“I think we adjusted at the
plate,” she said. “We were able
to score seven runs. Last time, it
took us 10 innings to score one.
We made some big adjustments
offensively, and the kids really
bought into the game plan, and
that helped a lot.”
The Lady Hawks then moved on
to face Collins Hill on Thursday,
another team that had defeated
Mill Creek earlier in the year,
winning on September 11 2-0.
But it was a different story this
time, as the Lady Hawks played
a strong game against the Lady
Eagles, winning 7-0.
Morgan Bullock recorded her
third post-season win of the year,
giving up two hits while record
ing nine strikeouts.
Millonig had eight assists at
third base, and three put outs.
Dossman had two hits and two
RBIs, Rogers had three hits
and two runs scored, Stephanie
Konkle had two hits and an RBI,
Saxton had two hits and two runs
scored, and Hannah Graham laid
down a perfect suicide squeeze
bunt.
“I think it started with our pitch
ing and defense,” Murdock said
of the win. “Morgan had all of her
pitches working, and Allie really
did play great defense at third.
We were able to keep ourselves
in the game and give ourselves a
chance to score.
“Towards the end of the game,
our bats got hot. We used our
speed on the bases, we got some
bunts down, and we were able to
push some runs across. It was a
good win.”
That win set up the Lady Hawks
for the region championship game
on Tuesday. They were scheduled
to face off against the winner
of the North Gwinnett - Collins
Hill game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Results of the game were not
available at press time.
A victory would give the
Lady Hawks their third con
secutive region championship in
7-AAAAA.
Lady Hawks look to end
regular season on high note
The Mill Creek Lady Hawks
volleyball team had an up and
down week last week, winning
three and losing four matches
since Oct. 2.
Their week got off to a sour start,
as they lost their final area match
of the season to Norcross 16-25,
25-20, and 25-19 on Tuesday.
Then on Tuesday night, the Lady
Hawks dropped a match to Sandy
Creek 25-20, and 25-21.
On Thursday, Mill Creek started
play in the Gwinnett County tour
nament, facing off first against
Peachtree Ridge. The Lady Hawks
came away from that match with
a victory, winning 25-21 in both
sets.Thursday night, the Lady
Hawks faced South Gwinnett,
again coming away with a win,
25-12, and 25-13.
After a day off on Friday, Mill
Creek returned to tournament play
on Saturday, facing off that morn
ing against Central Gwinnett, and
coming away with another win,
25-21, 17-25, and 15-25.
But an hour later, the Lady
Hawks hit their first defeat of the
tournament, dropping a match to
Wesleyan 25-19, and 25-13. Mill
Creek would end the tournament
with a second loss, this time to
Parkview, 20-25, and 21-25.
The Lady Hawks team was
scheduled to wrap up their regular
season on Tuesday with matches
against South Forsyth and North
Gwinnett at North Gwinnett.
Results were not available at
press time.

BJC Medical Center installs 16-Slice CT Scanner
Pictured left to right: Jason Tyner, director of radiology & Dr. Gregory Downing, Radiologist
BJC Medical Center's Radiology Department recently
replaced their single-slice CT scanner with Siemens Emotion
16 slice CT scanner. According to Jason Tyner, Director of
Radiology, The decision to acquire the more advanced tech
nology was made for several reasons. "We were supported
by the administration and Board Authority in replacing our
single slice CT Scanner with the 16-slice scanner because
they felt that it is very important to keep up with the cut
ting edge imaging technology and provide our patients the
best care. That provides local services, such as emergency
care for head trauma and stroke patients, with cutting
edge technology that is being used in larger medical cen
ters. This new technology provides much faster more effi
cient scans with enhanced digital imaging. The digital
imaging provides the Radiologist the capability to manipu
late the images for multiple interpretation and diagnosis
applications. This new technology will also offer our local
physicians and medical staff a wider scope of practice diag
nostics to treat and care for their patients."
The 16-slice CT scanner has the added advantage of faster
acquisition time. This scanner can perform a routine chest
study in 8 seconds or a view of the abdomen or pelvis in 8
to 10 seconds. This new equipment represents a quantum
leap in imaging quality. This incredible tool, combined with
the high level of diagnostic expertise of the physicians and
the skilled technologists at BJC Medical Center will result in
incredibly clear and precise images of the internal struc
tures of the body. This technology allows three dimensional
reconstruction and virtual fly through imaging available
almost instantaneously following the completion of the
scans
The 16-Slice Scanner utilizes a sophisticated technology,
which is a revolution in medical imaging. This technology
provides huge gains in image quality and patient comfort,
as well as adding new clinical applications. Multi-slice tech
nology means that the x-ray tube can actually take thinner
section images much more rapidly. Thin sections and rapid
acquisition mean higher detail and sharper images. In addi
tion to scans of the head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis,
spine, and extremities, the new scanner has the ability for
advanced imaging such as CT angiography which looks at
arteries throughout the body, CT perfusion for early stroke
detection, and criteria-based CT screening exams of the
body.
