Wednesday, October 10, 2007 The Braselton News Page 5B Church N e ws Who’s mimicking whom? Chloe and I have a game we play. She makes a noise, and I mimic her. She makes the noise again, and I mimic her again. She makes the noise again and I- well, I’m sure you get the point. We have a great time play ing it. Amy, however, doesn’t enjoy it as much as Chloe and I do. After round five, she’s glaring at me. Round 10, she’s picking up something to throw. Round 14 (after I’ve ducked the airborne object), she’s coming at me. From the other side of the locked bathroom door I complete round 20. At some point Chloe loses inter est in the game and quits. I’m afraid to come out of the bath room, so I end up sleeping in the tub with my foot against the door. Ah, memories! Chloe loves the game. It’s a game in which she sets the pace, she’s in control, and her father follows her lead. I have found that many other people like to play the same game. Not with their earthly fathers, but with their heavenly father. It seems that many people today want the benefit of having God “on their side,” but don’t want the responsibility of following him. They want to lead, and have him follow them. They want to indulge in behavior that is not good for them. They want to “do their own thing.” They want to be in control, set the pace, and have their heav enly father mimic them by putting his stamp of approval on what they do. Since when have children ever known what is best for them? If I allowed Chloe to decide what she ate, she’d eat nothing but junk food. If I allowed her to decide what time she went to bed, she’d stay up until she dropped. She’d do what was pleasing to her, not what was best for her. I’d end up with a sick, exhausted child. But as the father, I set the guide lines. I insist that she eat food that is good for her. I insist that she go to bed at a reasonable time. I insist that she follows my rules of behavior, and that she not act like a little hooligan (as if that were even possible. She’s an angel!). I place the example before her, and I expect her to mimic the behavior I desire. Is our heavenly father any dif ferent? He sets the standard for the way we should live our lives. He lets us know what that standard is by revealing it through his word, the Bible. Then he expects us to mimic him by living our lives according to his standard. If we do, we’ll become healthy Christians. If we don’t, we’ll become something less than healthy - sickly, tired and inef fective. The benefits of mimicking our heavenly father far outweigh the benefits of trying to make him mimic us. And when I do mimic God, it’s not nearly as annoying to my wife.
