Historical society learns about UGA’s past
The membership and guests of the Jackson County
Historical Society were treated to a trip to The
University of Georgia’s Franklin (Old) College build
ing during an October 14 “ramble.”
The land on which the building stands was in
Jackson County until 1801, when it was cut off for
Clarke County.
Milton Leathers III presented a program on the
establishment of this, the first state-chartered uni
versity in the United States, and its first president,
Abraham Baldwin.
Dr. Merritt Pound from Athens once quoted
President Angell of Yale, who stated: “Abraham
Baldwin was the smartest college president in the
United States that I ever heard about, because he had
the job for sixteen years, he resigned as soon as he
hired the first faculty member, and he left before any
student arrived on campus!”
The afternoon ramble around campus led to the
University’s Hargrett Library, where Linda Aaron
pulled numerous old court documents from Jackson
County that were part of Dr. E. Merton Coulter’s
collection. The group was also privileged to see and
handle other treasures from the Hargrett collection.
The next meeting of the historical society will be
January 20 at the First Baptist Church in Pendergrass.
Call 706-757-2471 for information on programs or
membership.
