Page 14A The Braselton News Wednesday, October 24, 2007 Barrow County Commissioners will not support changing regional airport into a ‘carrier’ airport BY KRISTI REED WINDER-The Barrow County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday night to withhold support for the conversion of the Northeast Georgia Regional Airport from a business airport to a regional passenger airport. In a unanimous vote, board members passed a reso lution supporting instrument landing system improve ments, glidescope improvements and use of the airport for “general and business aviation,” but with held support for a “FAA part 139 airport providing regularly scheduled airline services.” While the board stated in the resolution that they are not currently and have not previously considered the airport as a carrier airport when approving expan sions or funding, they reiterated their support of the airport as a “gateway of significant importance for business and general aviation development.” District 4 commissioner Isaiah Berry said the Northeast Georgia Regional Airport was never intend ed to be a passenger airport. While Berry said he would like to see the airport profitable, he said plans to make the airport an alternative for Hartsfield- Jackson airport are not appropriate. “We need to move on and make the best of what we have,” said Berry. “We can take some of the burden off the taxpayer.” DROUGHT PLANS In other business, Public Works Director Terry Darragh said though the drought is continuing, water conservation measures are working. Darragh said water usage is down significantly from two months ago. Darragh said usage has dropped from 4.5 mil lion gallons per day in August to 2.5 MGD as of early October. “We’ve seen significant reductions in the use of water due to the outdoor watering ban and other measures,” Darragh said. “Conservation measures are really having an effect on overall water usage in the county.” Darragh said with continuing conservation efforts, the water supply should be adequate into the early part of next year even without substantial rainfall. OTHER BUSINESS In other business, the Barrow BOC: • heard a report from county finance director Beth Horacek for the fiscal year through September. Horacek said total revenues were 98.5 percent of budgeted rev enues, a $525,645 shortfall. Total expenditures were under budget by over $750,000. Horacek praised depart ment heads for managing expenses and allowing the county to add to county reserves despite the revenue shortfall. • approved two amendments to the Unified Development Code. The first amendment provides commissioners with more leeway in zoning property. The second amendment formally names certain parcels of land in the area of Hwy. 124 and Hwy. 211 as the “Highway Corridor Overlay District.” • tabled an amendment to expand the Highway Corridor Overlay District. The proposed amendment would extend the landscape, access and architectural standards of the original overlay district along Hwy. 211 to the Winder city limits. Parts of Hwy. 81, Hwy. 11, Hwy. 316 and Hwy. 53 would be included. • approved plans for a GovDeals Internet auction of 20 surplus vehicles from the fire department and sheriffs department. The vehicles will be advertised in November with the auction being held Nov. 30 through Dec. 21. • approved a request to rezone 32.43 acres located at 338 Parks Mill Rd from AG to M2 for an industrial park. • approved a request to rezone .52 acres located at 104 Mears St. from R1 to Cl for use as an office. • approved the rezoning of 6.12 acres at 422 Carl Bethlehem Rd from AG to R1 for a five lot subdivision. As a condition of the rezoning, the houses must be a minimum of 2000 square feet and be three sides brick. • approved a request to rezone one acre at 678 Hancock Bridge Rd. from AG to Rl. The board also approved a request to rezone 2.56 acres on Hancock Bridge Rd. from AR to Rl and to allow the property to be split into two tracts. I SIGN UP? A LEAGUE WHERE EVERY CHILD PLAYS.
