Panthers fight hard, but lose to Loganville
Coach says team still
had chance to win late
WHERE ARE YOU GOING?
Panthers Ryan Howe (43) and Jake Swaim (33) move in on Loganville’s Zach West (22) during Friday night’s matchup. The Red Devils
defeated Jackson County 23-7.
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
WHEN ALL the dust had set
tled from last Lriday’s Jackson
County-Loganville matchup,
Panther head coach Billy Kirk
saw some positives from his
team.
The Jackson County squad
played a gritty defensive game
and hung around to put a legiti
mate scare into the visiting Red
Devils. However, in the end,
Loganville left town with a 23-7
win leaving the Panthers still
searching for their first win of
2007.
Lor Kirk and his players, it has
been a frustrating element, but it
also means it is time to simply
keep working.
“We are doing some good
things,” the first-year head coach
said. “However, we didn’t have
that total team effort that you need
to win. We need for our offense,
defense and special teams to con
tribute as a group. Turnovers are
also killing us. They had two big
screen passes for touchdowns.”
Kirk said Loganville entered
the contest determined to run the
football on Jackson County but
the Panther defense was up to the
challenge. The Red Devils then
went to the short passing game,
however, and cashed in on screen
passes to running back Zach West
from quarterback Drew Payne.
“I think we made them work
harder than they thought they
were going to have to,” Kirk
said. “Our kids kept fighting, and
keep going until the very end. I
am proud of our players for that
effort. We were still in the game
with a chance to win midway
through the fourth quarter.”
The loss dropped the Panthers
to 0-7 overall (0-4 in Region
8-AAAA) while Loganville upped
its season mark to 3-4 (2-2).
The Red Devils took the open
ing kickoff and moved to the
JCCHS 8-yard line before the
drive stalled. LHS kicker Ashlynn
Bass then connected on his first
of three field goals for an early
3-0 advantage. A holding penalty
during the drive hurt Loganville’s
attempt to reach the endzone.
The Red Devils would eventu
ally lead 13-0 at halftime. LHS
did not gain some legitimate
breathing room until the second
screen pass to West resulting in a
touchdown and a 23-0 lead.
Jackson County’s lone score
came on a 65-yard run by Adarius
Hendrix.
Kirk knows his team is battling
tough odds each time it steps on
the football field.
“We are basically playing a
AAAA schedule with AA num
bers,” the coach said. “That makes
it very difficult to do what we are
trying to do in terms of building
a program. We are giving it all
we have. Loganville had 95 play
ers last week and was putting in
an entirely new defense at times
while we were going with many
of the same players. We only had
26 players touch the field last
Lriday.”
As he looked ahead to this
week’s contest against Madison
County, Kirk said he needs a
complete four-quarter effort in all
three areas from his team.
“We will look at the film of the
Loganville game and see where
we can improve,” the coach said.
“We have kids who are simply
inexperienced on Lriday night.
We are playing sophomores we
probably shouldn’t be playing
varsity football at this point but
they are having to line up and
go.”
Despite the tough season, Kirk
said his players remain deter
mined to improve and continue to
have an upbeat attitude.
“We have a fighting spirit,”
he said. “We want to get a win
so bad. I can handle the losses
if we play a complete game.
That’s what we need to have this
week.”
This Lriday’s contest against
Madison County will be the first
of three remaining games on the
2007 slate for the JCCHS gridiron
Panthers. Kickoff in Danielsville
is set for 7:30 p.m.
