Page 10A The Braselton News Wednesday, November 14, 2007 CHECK GIVEN Representatives of the Jackson County Certified Literate Community program, (L-R) Sue Mealor, Sandra Fite, Marla Tyler and Joy Bates, receive a $15,000 check from Jackson EMC Foundation board member Shade Storey and Jackson EMC Jefferson district manager Don Stewart. The funds will allow the organization to offer GED classes in Jefferson. Literacy program awarded $15,000 grant The Jackson County Certified Literate Community Program was recently awarded a $15,000 grant by the Jackson EMC Foundation to teach basic adult education and GED classes in Jefferson. The program works to equip adults who have not graduated from high school with a GED diploma to enable them to pursue a higher education or enter the workforce. Currently, GED classes are only offered at the Lanier Technical College campus in Commerce. More than 50 percent of last year’s graduating class lived in West Jackson, so an extension of the existing Jackson County Adult Learning Center to a Jefferson class site would make the program acces sible to students who might have work, transporta tion or child care conflicts. Grant funds will be used for an instructor’s sal ary, books, practice test, and other supplies for GED classes that will be offered on Saturdays and two eve nings a week at the First Baptist Church of Jefferson, which is donating meeting space and utilities. Jackson EMC Foundation grants assist charitable and community organizations, as well as individu als. Any individual or organization in the counties served by Jackson EMC - Athens/Clarke, Banks, Barrow, Franklin, Gwinnett, Hall, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison and Oglethorpe counties - may apply for a foundation grant. Those seeking funding must complete a grant application, available at local Jackson EMC offices or at http://www.jacksonemc.com/Guidelines-for- Funding.l06.0.html.
