VETERANS HONORED
West Jackson Middle School honored a number of veterans, some of who are still serving in active
duty, during a ceremony on Friday. Shown in the front row of those honored are: Sid Porter, Robert
Golden and Charles Walrath. Porter has served in the Army for a year, Golden in the armed forces 29
years and Walrath served for 42 years in the Navy. Photos by Kerri Testement

The opportunities to speak to
veterans of wars from decades
ago — such as World War II and
the Korean War — are quickly
passing, as are the soldiers who
fought in those conflicts.
That’s what Capt. Robert
Golden of the U.S. Army wants
younger Americans to understand
— that more than 1,000 WWII
veterans are dying each day.
And that’s what he tells his
students at West Jackson Middle
School. Golden is a long-term
substitute teacher at the school.
“That’s history that’s dying on
us,” he said.
On Friday, WJMS held a
Veteran’s Day Celebration to
honor the men and women who
have served in the U.S. Armed
Forces. Veteran’s Day was held
on Sunday, Nov. 11.
During the ceremony, students
and faculty packed the gymnasi
um to honor a number of veterans
from the young to the old, and
from all branches of the military.
PFC Sid Porter has been in
the Army for a year. He was
scheduled to head to Iraq at one
point, but hasn’t been deployed
yet. In the meantime, he is work
ing at a car dealership and lives in
Commerce.
Porter brought his three-year-
old-daughter, Savannah, to the
ceremony and said he talked to
some of the older veterans.
Golden has served in the Army,
Navy and Marine Corps. After
serving in the first Gulf War, he
volunteered to go to Iraq, but he
hasn’t been deployed, either.
For Golden, serving in the
armed forces is not just a matter
of duty, but a love for the United
States, too.
“For my kids, I want to go over
there and fight there, rather than
in our own backyard,” he said.
Kevin “Chappy” Hynes, the
chaplain for the University of
Georgia football team, was the
featured speaker of the event.
Hynes is a Marine Corps veteran,
whose family has deep ties to
military service.
“Right now, there are people
a few years older than you —
fighting for you,” Hynes told the
students. He asked the students to
include those serving in the mili
tary in their daily prayers.
Hynes also said he wanted stu
dents to honor and respect veter
ans.
“We’re recognizing veterans in
hopes you can learn something,”
he said, while adding that stu
dents must learn about their coun
try’s history.
Hynes explained that while
Memorial Day honors those who
served their country and lost their
lives, Veteran’s Day honors those
veterans who served their country
and are still alive.
“This is the greatest nation in
the world,” Hynes added.
