Making God Laugh
In the Eyes of
the Father
Parrish Myers
eotf@comcast.net
I’ve heard it said that
if you want to make God
laugh, tell him your plans.
Well, if that’s the case, then
God must be busting a gut
about right now.
After Chloe was born,
Amy and I determined that
a three-year span between
children would be just about right. Chloe would be old enough to do
many things for herself, allowing us to give the necessary attention to
the new baby.
Then, one day Amy told me the news. While Chloe was not yet a year
old, we were going to be parents again. I could hear the supernatural
snicker; the godly guffaw; the holy ha-ha-ha; the theolo- well, you get
the idea.
You’ve heard the old joke that birth control is only 98% effective -
it’s the other two percent you have to worry about? Yeah. We’re living
proof.
I’m sure everyone has at least one story where they’ve made certain
plans, only to find out that God’s plans differ from theirs. And whose
plans do you think win out? You guessed it. God’s.
I went through the usual range of emotions and thought processes.
Fear. Worry. Frustration. How were we going to care for another child?
How were we going to feed another mouth and clothe another body that
seems to outgrow clothes by the week?
After I considered and discarded such ideas as bank robber, late night
infomercial salesman and televangelist, I decided that we were just
going to have to trust in the Lord and pray that He would provide for
our needs.
That seems so out of place, doesn’t it? To go through all the worry
and anxiety, to consider the options before me, discarding one after the
other. And only when I’ve exhausted all my options do I finally decide
to trust God for what I cannot do myself. Does anyone else recognize the
backward thinking involved?
When trials come, when temptations arise, when fears assail us, our
heavenly Father ought to be our first resort, not our last. If we turned to
Him at the outset, we could avoid all the time and energy we waste as we
worry and wonder about how things are going to work out.
Maybe the reason we don’t turn to Him as a first resort is because we
don’t think we should “bother” Him with what we consider to be “small
problems” in the grand scheme of things. But as a father, none of my
child’s (soon to be children’s) problems are small. None of them are
beneath my attention. None of them are beyond my compassion.
Chloe doesn’t hesitate coming to me if she’s got a problem, no matter
how big or how small. She doesn’t stop to consider whether it’s worth
bringing to me. All she knows is that if she has a problem, daddy can fix
it, so she brings it to me. And it thrills my soul that she does.
If it makes me so happy when Chloe comes seeking my help, don’t
you think it makes God happy when we seek help from Him?
So, in the future I will look to the Lord, I will trust in Him, and I will
go to Him with my problems as a first resort, not a last.
