Women face forgery charges for fake traveler’s checks
Three women from California
were charged by Braselton police
for forgery, after police found coun
terfeit traveler's checks in their
vehicle.
A Braselton officer stopped the
vehicle for a traffic violation on
1-85. He reported smelling the odor
of burnt marijuana coming from the
vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle, Venus
Lynn Smith, 36, told the officer
the women were on vacation from
California and were shopping in
South Carolina.
Smith offered to have the officer
search her vehicle, when he asked
if there were drugs in the vehicle,
according to police.
When one of the passengers
exited the vehicle, the officer said
he saw something stuffed in the
woman's pants. She later pulled out
a piece of paper wrapped around
traveler’s checks. The woman, who
was identified as Rosie Lee Carroll,
42, also had a large amount of
cash, traveler's checks and a check
book in someone else’s name in her
purse, police said.
Police said they found five cell
phones among the three women,
two checkbooks with someone
else’s name on them, and coun
terfeit licenses from New Jersey
and California. Police also found
several bags from department stores
with brand new clothes in them.
American Express later confirmed
that the traveler's checks were coun
terfeit checks, police said.
The women were taken to the
Jackson County Jail.

on Monday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m., at city hall.
Hilliard Lott is seeking rezoning from C-l to R-l for property located on
Pendergrass Road.
Also, Gadell, Inc. is seeking rezoning of property on Oak Street from R-l
to C-2.

and during its regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m.

Lensned to reduce a 50 foot buffer
along residential properties to 25 feet.
Mayor Graham and council mem
bers Dudley Ray and Phil Spivey voted
to approve the request, while council
members Ralph Richardson Jr. and
Richard Mayberry voted in opposition.
Richardson said he was concerned
about the 17 residential lots in The Falls
of Braselton next to the project, if the
buffer was reduced.
On Thursday, Angela LeCroy, a resi
dent of The Falls of Braselton, said
she is already concerned about erosion
issues with her property.
‘Twenty-five feet from my property
is not very far from my property when
there's a gigantic drop off,” she said.
Graham said Monday that the new
zoning condition would benefit resi
dents in The Falls of Braselton, as it
would require that two rows of trees be
planted on the top of a steep hill. The
existing zoning condition could have
allowed the developer to plant the trees
at the bottom of the hill and not shield
the view of residents, she added.
Graham also asked to have the zon
ing condition to require that no HVAC
units be placed on buildings less than
26 feet high that abut residential prop
erty.
Graham added that the town council
didn't change the site plan it approved
in November 2006, which detailed that
buildings be no more than 74 feet from
the residential property lines.
The Braselton Town Council also
denied a request by Lensned to change
a zoning condition requiring a 40-foot
buffer to a five-foot landscaped strip
along Hwy. 211.

Town Council:

133,875 square feet for a commercial
office park. The development will also
include two, two-acre parcels along
Hwy. 53 for a potential retail store or
restaurant.
•approved a request for annexation
and rezoning from Dunhill Developers,
LLC for 3.653 acres on Hwy. 53 from
A-2 in Jackson County to G-C in
Braselton for a development with three

“The process is one in which we
want to hear from citizens and par
ents,” Roach said. “We were able to
make a change that met [Hamilton
Mill’s] wishes and also met our
goals of balancing enrollment.”
While the change will keep all of
Hamilton Mill together and keep
Puckett's Mill Elementary under
capacity initially. Roach said that
ongoing growth in the area may
cause the school system to reexam
ine the boundary lines in the future.
Currently, the next major redistrict
ing is expected when the upper Mill
Creek relief cluster opens in 2013.
Roach said further changes may be
made to the boundary maps before
they are finalized.
Citizens may provide additional
input to the board of education dur
ing a public hearing on Thursday,
Nov. 15, from 7-9 p.m., at the
Instructional Support Center, 437
