The Hawks traveled to Parkview to take part in the Parkview Tip-Off Classic, which started on Saturday. The start was a little rough on the team, as they fell victim to an aggres sive Riverdale team by a score of 70-40. Head boys’ basketball coach Phil Bollier pointed to turnovers for a score in the Riverdale game. “I know in the first half, they had ten or twelve buckets off turn overs for scoring, meaning that we bring the ball down and turn it over and they lay it in,” he said. “That’s just not the kind of team we are. That is something that we defiantly will get corrected. (We), I think, tried to advance the ball and dribble instead of help ing each other by getting the ball reversed off the pass. That was big in a game like that, where they’re putting pressure on you. We just played in a hurry all night long. “We got (the score) down to 10 in the second quarter, and then had a couple of possessions where we got in a hurry, and let it get stretched back out again. In the second half, I thought we played better, but still didn’t match their intensity.” The Hawks then moved on to face Sandy Springs Monday night. Results were not available at press time. Prior to Monday night’s game, Bollier said both teams run similar styles, and his team would have to take care of the basketball. “They’ll be aggressive and trap the ball,” he said. “What we need to do is be tough enough to get the ball out of the trap and get going, because once you get them by that trap, you’ve got pretty high percentage shots at the other end. What we did was we turned it over in the trap which didn’t allow us to get any high percentage shots.” Bollier says his expectations for the program for this year is to improve on where they were last year. “Our expectation is to be more competitive in our region, and get into the state playoffs. Our expec tations are to improve as the sea son goes on. We want to go out and battle as a team every night. Those are the basics of what we’re trying to do. Specifically, we need to improve on our rebound ing, our defending, and our field goal percentage.” Bollier said not having his play ers who also play on the football team this weekend didn’t help Saturday’s efforts. “Without our guys from foot ball, we were pretty young on Saturday night, and I think it showed,” he said. “Chase has had mono, so his conditioning, I think, added to some of his frustration, which made it difficult trying to do anything we wanted to do with the new guys in our program.” Now, with the whole team togeth er, the Hawks look to improve on their 2007 season. Their next game is scheduled for Tuesday, as they travel to Peachtree Ridge for a 7:30 match up with the Lions.
