MCAA holds basketball jamboree
BY KRISTI REED
Winter basketball season began
this weekend as the Mill Creek
Athletic Association (MCAA) held
their first annual jamboree. The jam
boree was held at Mill Creek High
School and gave all the association’s
teams the opportunity to play a half
game scrimmage prior to the start of
actual league competition.
The MCAA basketball program
has 1,050 players, 137 teams and
approximately 200 parent volun
teers. Assistant basketball director
Joe Gooden said the program is the
largest in Gwinnett County and pos
sibly the largest in the state.
Gooden said the jamboree was
a joint effort between the athletic
association and Mill Creek High
School’s basketball program.
“We met with the high school
coaches and they wanted to be more
involved in the program,”” said
Gooden. “The high school coaches
wanted to tie their program into
ours.
The partnership is designed to
benefit both the community and the
kids, Gooden explained. The jambo
ree allowed first-time players to get
realistic game experience prior to the
start of the regular season. It served
also as a Mill Creek community
event. The Mill Creek High School
tip-off club participated, operating
the concession stand and selling
MCHS spirit wear. Additionally, the
event gave players the opportunity
to experience court time in the high
school gym.
“The kids get a big kick out of
playing in the high school gym,””
Gooden said.
The MCAA depends on commu
nity support and good relationships
with the schools to make the pro
gram successful.
“With an association our size, if
we didn’t have these schools, we
couldn’t hold games and practices,”
Gooden explained.
The association plays and practices
at nine different gyms. Gooden said
the association works each year to
help the community and the schools.
This year, the association showed
its appreciation by providing score-
boards and glass backboards for sev
eral elementary school gyms. The
association installed backboards and
scoreboards at Ivy Creek Elementary
School, Duncan Creek Elementary
School and Fort Daniel Elementary
School, as well as new backboards
for Harmony Elementary School.
Gooden said helping the commu
nity and schools benefits everyone
involved, but especially the players.
“It’s all about the kids,” Gooden
said. “It’s about them learning
sportsmanship, getting active, mak
ing friends and learning how to play.
We know that what we do benefits
the kids and the community.”
