What are your actions reflecting?
I took Chloe to the pedi
atrician this week. While
waiting for our appoint
ment, I had the opportunity
to observe some of the chil
dren in the waiting room
with us. Honestly, I have to
wonder what some parents
are thinking.
Now, I consider myself a pretty lenient parent. I admit I let Chloe get
away with some things my parents would not have let me get away with.
But, there does come a point where I draw the line. I won’t let Chloe
be disrespectful to others, and I won’t let her act like a little hoodlum.
But with some parents, it’s almost as if they missed out on the “parent
gene.”
One little boy stands out in my mind. He stands out because he
kept turning off the light in the waiting room, plunging it into near
total darkness. I and some of the other parents were getting upset. We
couldn’t talk, read or tend to our own children for this kid turning off
the lights.
Where was his mother? On the other side of the room, laughing at
what her son was doing. Someone — perhaps I — should have said
something to her, but I doubted it would have done any good. She was
getting too much enjoyment out of her son’s “spirited” (translation:
bratty) behavior. I felt she would respond to anything I might say with
either apathy or anger, so I sat there with the other parents, suffering
in silence.
A nurse came in and turned the lights on. As soon as she left, he
turned them off again. When she came back and turned the lights on the
second time she asked, “Where’s your mother?”
Only then did the mother do anything. She suddenly snapped into
“responsible mode” and scolded the child for playing with the lights,
which is something she should have done five minutes earlier.
I know why she didn’t, though. She was too busy enjoying the atten
tion. For the few minutes that her son was the center of attention, so
was she. She found enjoyment in the attention he received, even if it
was negative.
How different from our heavenly father. He doesn’t take enjoyment
from our bad behavior, or in the negative attention that arises from it.
Instead, He understands what the mother in the pediatrician’s office did
not: a child’s behavior reflects directly upon the parent.
God’s name is harmed when His children don’t act as they should.
When David committed sin with Bathsheba, Nathan told him, “You
have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme” (2
Samuel 12:14). David’s sinful behavior not only made him look bad, it
made God look bad.
Thankfully, the opposite is also true. Whenever God’s children behave
as they ought to it not only reflects well upon them, it also reflects well
upon Him. God is glorified by our good behavior.
What do your actions tell others about you? More importantly, what
do your actions tell others about your heavenly father?
