Page 6A The Braselton News Wednesday, November 28, 2007 Public Safety Suspect prompts foot chase after traffic stop Anti-abortion photos disrupt Mall of Georgia shoppers A man facing arrest for DUI made a Braselton officer chase him twice last week. Braselton police said Boris L. Bums, 33, of Hanahan, S.C., was driving 96 m.p.h. on 1-85, when an officer stopped him. The officer said Bums appeared very unsteady on his feet and the officer could smell the odor of alcohol coming from Bums. During the traffic stop, police said Burns tested positive for alco hol. When the officer told Burns to turn around, he became very irate, according to an incident report. Bums took off running, but the Braselton officer caught him and took him to the ground. Police said Bums still resisted arrest and took off running again. The officer was able to get Burns into custody after the second short foot chase. Police said an open container of alcohol was found in Burns’ vehicle. Bums was charged with speed ing, DUI, endangering a child while driving under the influence, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and open container of alco hol while operating a vehicle. BRASELTON ARRESTS The Braselton Police Department made the following arrests last week: •Matthew D. Jernigan, 24, 2005 Mountain Circle Church Road, Talmo, DUI, failure to obey a traf fic control device and failure to maintain lane. •Liviv Barou, 39, 2268 Democracy Drive, Braselton, dis orderly conduct. •Danielle N. Davis, 22, 4685 Wayne Poultry Road, Pendergrass, DUI and failure to maintain lane. •Jorge Loya Barraza, 28, 119 Carl Lane, Shelby, N.C., DUI, fail ure to maintain lane, driving while unlicensed or with an expired license and window tint violation. •Dwayne J. Beverly, 39, 505 Brockett Way, Clarkston, speed ing, driving while license suspend ed or revoked and wanted person apprehended for a warrant issued in Stone Mountain. •James Michael Reidling, 34, 1175 Ervin Chambers Road, Maysville, wanted person appre hended for a warrant issued in Jackson County. •Theresa Rose Knight, 37, 4705 Ledan Extension, Gainesville, wanted person apprehended for warrants issued in Oakwood and Jackson County. •Romeo Abel Gonzales-Gomez, 20, 3433 Cumberland Court, Apt. 2, Chamblee, disorderly conduct. •Georgia Gammon, 28, 5419 Concord Circle, Gainesville, pub lic intoxication and disorderly conduct. BRASELTON INCIDENT The following incident was reported to the Braselton Police Department last week: •criminal trespass and theft by taking at the Shell Food Mart on Ga. Hwy. 211, where an employee told police that someone broke the lock on an air compressor box. The suspect took $20 in coins. The damage to the air compressor coin box and the lock was valued at $100. Gwinnett County police arrest ed a Missouri man on Friday for displaying graphic pictures of aborted fetuses on a panel truck that he was driving near the Mall of Georgia. Police charged Robert Roethlisberger Jr., 44, with dis orderly conduct. A citizen called police to say a truck driving in the area was displaying “bloody” and “gory” images of aborted fetuses, police said. A Gwinnett County police officer found the truck and stopped its driver. Two banners on both sides of the truck measured approxi- an aborted fetus being held in for ceps, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department. A police officer told Roethlisberger that the area was very crowded with mall shoppers and children who were exposed to the photographs. The officer gave him the option to display his anti-abortion banners without the graphic photographs. Police said Roethlisberger refused to follow the request. The officer arrested Roethlisberger, removed the ban ners and impounded the truck. He was charged with disorderly conduct for displaying obscene Hall Co. (CALEA) will arrive on Saturday, Dec. 1, to examine all aspects of the Hall County Sheriff’s Office’s policies, procedures, management, operations and support services. Verification by the team that the Hall County Sheriff’s Office meets the commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation — a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excel lence, said Hall County Sheriff Steve Cronic. As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public infor mation session on Monday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. Those interested in speaking are required to sign-in between 6:30-7 p.m. The public session will be held in the jury assembly room of the Hall County Courthouse, located at 225 Spring Street, Gainesville. Public comments will also be taken by telephone on Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 1-3 p.m., by calling 770-531-5176. Telephone comments, as well as appearances at the public infor mation session, are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A copy of the standards is available at the Hall County Sheriff’s Office or by contacting Sgt. Tammy Crawford, at 770-297-5530. Those who want to submit written comments about the Hall County Sheriff’s Office’s abil ity to meet the standards for accreditation are asked to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), 10302 Yaston Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, Virginia 22030. The accreditation program man ager for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office is Sgt. Crawford, who said the assessment team includes law enforcement practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit officers and other places where compliance can be wit nessed. The assessors are John “Rob” Sofie (team leader), Omaha, Neb.; Donald J. Jones, Lemont, Ill.; and Blythe Frausto, Tempe, Ariz. Once the commission’s assessors com plete their review of the agency, they report back to the full com mission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accred ited status. Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was ini tially accredited. seven feet tall by six feet wide, police said. Hoschton police arrested a Monroe man last week, after he twice denied having anything to drink. Hoschton police charged Sampson Sachan Lo, 21, with DUI and speeding. An officer said Lo was speed ing on Ga. Hwy. 53. During a traffic stop, Lo was trying to not exhale near the officer and kept his answers brief, police said. The officer said he could smell the odor of alcohol coming from Lo’s vehicle, but he twice denied that he drank anything, according to an incident report. Lo failed a field sobriety evalua tion and two chemical breath tests, police said. Lo was taken to the Jackson County Jail. HOSCHTON ARRESTS The Hoschton Police Department made the following arrests last week: •Shane Mark Murphy, 18, 6046 Narcissa Place, Duluth, speeding, possession of less than one once of marijuana, and possession and use of a drug-related objects. •Tracy Michel Johns, 30, 189 Waterloo-Rebecca Highway, Chula, driving while license suspended or revoked and seat belt violation. •Efren Tuarez, 17, 103501 Summit Street, Athens, driving while unlicensed or with an expired license, no insurance and speeding. •Julius Thomas Wilkins, 61, 3338 Athens Highway, Gainesville, DUI, public drunkenness, open container violation, gas drive-off and interfer ing with a 911 call. HOSCHTON INCIDENTS The following incidents were reported to the Hoschton Police Department last week: •person down at a Buck Trail address, where Hoschton police assisted medical personnel on a call. •suspicious vehicle on Hwy. 53 and Jackson Trail Road, where a Barrow County firefighter told a 911 dispatcher that a vehicle was involved in a collision. The vehi cle’s air bags were deployed, but no one was near the vehicle. Police determined the vehicle was located in Sell’s Mill Park, which is outside Mill Creek student killed in hunting accident A Mill Creek High School fresh man was killed in a hunting accident near Pine Mountain last weekend, according to the Associated Press. Fourteen-year-old Zachery Gibson was shot in the chest by another teenager while squirrel hunting, Harris County authori ties said. Gibson was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he died on Saturday morn ing.
