BY KRISTI REED Last year, Mill Creek High School’s Relay for Life team raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year, they hope to raise over $40,000 to fund the fight against cancer. Assistant Principal Patricia Lowrie, a cancer survivor her self and head of this year’s team, said she hopes to involve the entire community in the effort. “This year, we want more parent involvement and more community involvement,” she said. “We are looking at sev eral things that will involve the community.” So far, the team has imple mented several fund-raising initiatives. On December 15, the team will be auctioning gift baskets at the “Taste of Mill Creek” event. Additionally, this month team members will be selling lollipop stocking stuffers to students in the high school lunchroom. Mill Creek principal Jim Markham, also a cancer survi vor, has given staff and faculty the opportunity to contribute to the Relay for Life effort through his “Dress down for December” program. Throughout the month of December, staff and fac ulty can purchase tickets which allow them to wear “dressy casual” attire to work, typical ly jeans and Mill Creek spirit wear. Tickets are $5 a day, $15 a week or $45 for the entire month. All proceeds benefit Relay for Life. Team member Julie Tharpe said the early start to fund raising has allowed the team to increase its goal from last year. “Everybody was so excit ed,” Tharpe said. “Last year, we raised $27,000 in the few months we had. We felt like with the extra months, we could exceed what we did last year. We knew with more time, we could certainly have a bigger impact. Hopefully we can get some of the surrounding com munity to jump on board with us. This is a very giving area.” Tharpe hopes this year’s team will have 200 members. Last year, the team had approxi mately 100 students involved in the effort. Mill Creek High School cheer leaders have also started a spe cial Relay for Life fund-raising effort in honor of junior varsity cheerleader Marley Kornowa. Kornowa was diagnosed with Stage III metastatic melanoma this past summer. To show support for Marley and to raise funds for Relay for Life, the cheerleaders are selling pink “Marley’s Mob Squad” T-shirts and bracelets. Tharpe said Kornowa is this year’s honorary chair person of the Relay for Life team. “She is a darling girl, very upbeat,” Tharpe said. “She is a great motivator for the girls.” So far, the cheerleaders have sold approximately 75 t-shirts. The T-shirts and bracelets will be on sell at the “Taste of Mill Creek” event. Kornowa said she is grateful for the support her team mates have shown. “I never thought it would be me and I never thought my cheerleading squad would be this supportive,” Kornowa said. “I am very thankful for it.” Kornowa said it is impor tant to her to help in the fight against cancer. “I’m excited to help. It just hits home,” she said. “It could happen to you. You don't want to be in that position. It’s important to help others avoid that.” Kornowa has helped raise money for two other cancer charities as well: Aflac Cancer Center at Children’s Hospital and Caring Bridges. In October, the Gymnastix Training Center in Buford hosted “Flip for the Cure” in Kornowa’s honor. The event raised over $4,000. Kornowa is currently being treated at the Aflac Cancer Center. “There are so many sick kids there, it actually breaks my heart,” she said. “They’re so much worse off than I am.” Tharpe said the fact that so many people at Mill Creek High School that have been affected by cancer motivates the team. “For the kids, you hate that it’s sad,” Tharpe said. “It just shows there are so many things out there besides us.” Patricia Fowrie hopes the community will join together to make this year the most suc cessful yet for Relay for Fife. “Cancer touches everybody,” she said. Individuals or business es wishing to donate baskets should bring the baskets to the Mill Creek Media Center before December 15. They are asked to include their name and a brief list of the baskets contents.
