JCCHS STUDENTS GIVE TOYS FOR TOTS
Taylor named Jackson Co. teacher of the year
Lieutenant Colonel Tom Taylor
has been named the East Jackson
Comprehensive High School
Teacher of the Year, as well as
Jackson County School System
Teacher of the Year for school
year 2007-2008.
Lt. Col. Taylor has been part of
the Jackson County school system
since he started the Junior ROTC
program in August 2000.
He served 28 years in the U.S.
Army, and upon retiring in July
1998, entered his second career in
public education.
Lt. Col. Taylor has been the
senior Army instructor at Jackson
County Comprehensive High
School for seven years and moved
to East Jackson Comprehensive
High School this school year to
start the Junior ROTC program at
EJCHS.
Taylor will now enter the
Georgia Teacher of the Year com
petition, where the state finalists
will be announced in February
2008.
The Jackson County Comprehensive High School Y-Club recently participated in the Guinness World
Record-breaking toy drive benefiting the Toys for Tots campaign. The group joined with 10 cities
across the nation in a one-week long drive in November. The previous record was 12,000 pounds of
toys in one week. The Panther community helped shatter that record, which now stands at 28,000
pounds. Shown are Sam Cagle and Olivia Waldrip with toys that were dropped off every morning and
afternoon at the high school. “We would like to thank everyone for their support and generous con
tributions that will make the holidays brighter for children in our community and across the country,”
school officials wrote in a statement.
Piedmont College offering nursing programs
The Piedmont College Daniel

spring and summer semesters.
The programs include a pre

the college’s Demorest campus
for students who want to start a
career in nursing. Also offered
is an “RN-to-BSN” program at
both the Demorest and Athens
campuses for registered nurses
who already have an associate’s
degree.
“The RN-to-BSN program is
designed for working nurses who
need flexible study hours,” said
Dr. Linda Scott, dean of the school
of nursing.
“Students enrolled in the
‘RN-to-BSN’ program meet three
times during the evening each
semester,” Scott said. “Most of
their studies are conducted on-line
or through study discs. It allows
working nurses to study at times
that are convenient to them.”
Scott said the RN-to-BSN
program is open to nurses who
have an associate’s degree and
an unencumbered Georgia nurs

enrolling applicants for spring
semester, which begins in January.
Students wishing to enroll in later
semesters next year should also
contact the school of nursing now,
she said.
The pre-licensure BSN pro

offered at the Demorest campus
and is now accepting applications
for classes that begin during the
summer 2008 semester.
“The small classes meet dur
ing the day, and students receive
the personal instruction that
Piedmont is known for,” Scott
said. “Students also learn using
our simulated patient lab, which
includes computer-controlled
mannequins that simulate a vari
ety of patient conditions.”
