Photo by Brandon Reed It was another successful meet for the Mill Creek swim and dive Hawks, as they took part last weekend in the Clody Memorial Invitational at the Mountain Park Aquatic Center in Stone Mountain. In Friday’s diving invitational, Cameron Cowgill took first in the Boys 6 and 11 dives. New school records were set by Cowgill and by Meghan Gordon in the 11-dive competition. On Saturday, winners included Caroline Roloff in the girls’ 200-yard freestyle and the girls’ 100-yard freestyle, Sarah Miller in the girls’ 200-yard IM, and Christian Cardona in the boys' 100-yard Butterfly. The team of Savannah Miller, Lindsey Flammang, Kaitlin Bishop and Roloff won in the girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay. New individual state qualifying times were set by Cowgill (diving), Roloff (200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle), Matt Tumblom (50-yard freestyle), and by the 400-yard free style relay winning team. Next up for the Hawks is the Cobb/ Gwinnett Challenge on Saturday at Mountain Park. Hockey Mill Creek’s Ice Hawks defeat Northview The Mill Creek Ice Hawks hockey team knocked off another opponent this week, with a 5-3 victory against Northview on Sunday. The Ice Hawks got off to a quick start in the first period, scoring first against Northview with just under six minutes remaining. Mill Creek would score again around two minutes later, then Northview picked up their first point of the night with just under three min utes remaining. But the Ice Hawks moved further out with a goal with less than 20 seconds left on the clock in the first period. The Ice Hawks held fast in the second period in a game that turned aggressive, seeing several penalties and skirmishes on the ice. Regardless, Mill Creek stood their ground, and the score stayed at 3-1 at the end of the period. It was more of the same in the third quarter, but the Ice Hawks defended well, and held Northview at bay. Early in the period, a Mill Creek goal moved the Ice Hawks out further into the lead, 4-1. Northview answered with a goal of their own, but Mill Creek fired back to make the score 5-2. With just over three minutes remaining, Northview made another charge, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Mill Creek lead. With the win, the Ice Hawks are now 6-1-0. Basketball “ continued from page IB night, with four, and tied with Simmons and Williams for steals with two each. With the win, the Lady Hawks remain unbeaten, with an 8-0 overall record, and 4-0 in the region. The team looks to remain unbeaten Friday night, as they play host to Duluth. The Wildcats enter Friday night’s match-up with a 5-1 record, and 3-0 in the region. “Duluth is very big, and they’re pretty athletic,” Simmons said. “Physically, it’s probably going to be the most challenging game that we’ve seen so far, just from the stand point of what they can do with their size and their athleticism. It’ll be a different match up than we’ve seen in the last few games. “It’ll be interesting to see. We’re going to have to battle for rebounds, and really move our feet on defense. It’s going to be tough, but it’ll be a good challenge for us.” It also marks Mill Creek’s final home game before the Christmas break. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 PM. Commerce Scfioof of Vance A. Photo by Brandon Reed Brookwood Inv. ahead for Mill Creek The Mill Creek wrestling team continues to get it’s footing under it. They took part in the Peachtree Ridge Duals last week, winning two of their seven match ups dur ing the event. Head wrestling coach David Landis said he feels his athletes are wrestling better. “We were in with Gilmer, and a team from Tennessee that ended up winning the whole thing,” he said. “Saturday, we wrestled Woodland, Miller Grove, Grayson and North Lorsyth. We were closer with Grayson and North Lorsyth than we were last week. We were also close with Woodland.” Landis says the main thing right now is that his team is getting where it needs to be. “We’re getting guys into the weight class they need to be in,” he said. “We’re getting some of our guys back that were out with injuries, and we’re setting the line up. We’re getting to the point now to where I think we’re going to be all right in the future. They’re working hard and getting better, and that’s all we can ask.” Landis says this weekend’s Brookwood Christmas Invitational will be “a whole different ball- game.” Rather than the dual for mat that his wrestlers have been experiencing, the approach to the invitational is different. “Lriday night you’ll wrestle round robin for seeding purpos es,” Landis said. “Then you’ll come back and wrestle in the tournament on Saturday. So if you have four or five individuals that do well, then the team will do well. They accumulate points that way.” Landis says this format could be better for his athletes “Lor us, with eight or nine good wrestlers, that would be better, because you’re giving up some weight in the weight classes in a dual meet,” he said. “They all can score points.” Landis says right now, gaining experience is the key. “We’re still growing, we’re still getting more kids out and getting experience,” he said. “They’ll get enough by the time area comes around. There will be a lot of wrestling for them.” % Owned and Operated by Aydin St Jason G UVEN EVERYTHING 30-50% OFF ALL DIAMONDS 1 • Earrings • Rings • Pendants 30% OFF (T BRAND NAME WATCHES Movado Citizen Tissot Seiko Wittnauer Pulsar Bulova Swiss Army 14K& 18K Gold, Platinum, Silver Sr Stainless Steel Natural Cultured Pearls starting at $159.00 • Great Selection of High Quality Jewelry and Low Prices • Family Owned and Operated • All Sizes of Diamonds St Other Colored Gemstones •32 Years Experience • Jewelry Design • Remounting • Jewelry Repair • Engraving • Appraisals • Watch Repair HOURS Mon. - Sat. 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday 7 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. The Vinyards at Chateau Elan 2095 Highway 211 NW Braselton, GA 770-586-0073 Chateau Elan
