Page 6A The Braselton News Wednesday, December 12, 2007 Public Safety Retired state trooper follows reckless driver FUND-RAISING EVENT Challenged Child and Friends, an early intervention center, recent ly raised more than $185,000 from the 2007 Festival of Trees fund raiser held a private residence on Lake Lanier. Festival of Trees raises $185,000 for early intervention center A retired state trooper told Braselton police that a vehicle driving reck lessly on 1-85 forced him into the emergency lane on Sunday. The retired trooper said he fol lowed the vehicle off the interstate to a White Walnut Way address in the Mulberry Park subdivision, where he exited his vehicle and showed the female driver his badge. The female driver started yelling at him that he was not the “po po,” according to an incident report. The retired trooper said it appeared that she tried to strike him with his vehicle. The driver’s husband told police the trooper blocked them in on the interstate and she ran him off the roadway to exit 1-85. The husband wanted Braselton police to file a report for stalking and harassment and alleged that police were following the “good old boy” system to help each other. The husband further wanted to file a complainant for how the trooper was driving and how Braselton police refused to arrest him. A Braselton officer told the hus band a report would be available in three to five business days for him to pick-up. BRASELTON ARRESTS The Braselton Police Department made the following arrests last week: •Robert Kunis, 25, 6855 White Walnut Way, Braselton, DUI and failure to maintain lane. •Amber Daniel, 20, 94 Arbor Trace, Braselton, DUI, failure to maintain lane and failure to meet tag light requirements. Hoschton police arrested a woman after finding several nar cotics in her West Jefferson Street home. Police were called to the resi dence for a domestic dispute. A woman allowed an officer and a firefighter into the house. Hoschton police reported that the woman’s husband is wanted in Gwinnett County for probation violation and drug charges. The wife said her husband was gone, and there were no marijuana or methamphetamines in the house. The wife, later identified as Melanie G. Jordan Tuggle, gave consent for police to search her house. During the search, an offi cer said it appeared that Tuggle was attempting to hide something as she moved several dogs to the backyard. Police said they found several small pills in her purse, along with a straw, small glass vile and orange capsule. Tuggle said her •Valarie Trimble, 43, 4409 Knoll Crest, Flowery Branch, DUI and failure to maintain lane. •Chad Morgan, 26, 24 Kelly Court, Braselton, DUI, open con tainer of alcohol while operating a vehicle, failure to maintain lane and failure to use a signal when turning or changing lanes. •Alicia M. Askea, 22, 3515 Silver Creek Drive, Gainesville, DUI, fail ure to maintain lane and seat belt violation. BRASELTON INCIDENTS The following incidents were reported the past two weeks to the Braselton Police Department: •domestic dispute at a Grand Hickory Drive address, where a woman told police that she entered her boyfriend’s house and was asked by her boyfriend to go to the rear of the house to avoid seeing his fiance. The two women met, and the alleged girlfriend said he attempted to stop her from showing his fiance text messages her sent to her. The girlfriend told police the boyfriend jumped on her car, but police reported no damage. The alleged boyfriend told police he only delivered a bed to the would- be girlfriend, but there was no rela tionship. The man said he kicked the woman’s tire and told her to leave his property. The fiance told police the same story. Police told the girlfriend to get a temporary protective order. •abandoned vehicle at a Braselton Parkway address, where police said a pick-up truck was set on fire the previous day. An officer found a lighter near the truck and attempted husband probably put the items in her purse before he left. A K-9 unit was called to the residence. Another woman in the house during the incident, later identified as Ellen S. Bolen of Hoschton, also appeared to be hiding something from police during the search. The K-9 unit found other cap sules, a digital scale and a bag of marijuana under the couch cushion where Bolen was sitting, police said. Two “roach clips” in a purse were also found by police. Police also found six, long guns in the residence. At Tuggle’s request, Hoschton police wrote down phone numbers of friends and relatives to care for the animals at the residence. Tuggle was charged with pos session of methamphetamine, vio lation of the Georgia controlled substance act, possession of fire arms during the commission of a crime, possession of an ounce to contact the truck’s owner. The owner, who was on vacation, said he didn’t know his vehicle was stolen, but has had his other vehicle stolen three times. The Norcross man said he has problems with the apartment complex he lives at. •theft by taking at the Subway on Spout Springs Road, where an employee told police that a former employee came into the store and said she needed to get her jacket. The employee was busy remov ing trash when the suspect entered the store and went to where the employees keep their purses. Later, the employee said she noticed that $100 was missing from her wallet. Another employee in the store dur ing the incident said $25 was miss ing from her purse, too. •traffic stop on 1-85, where police stopped a North Carolina man for impeding the flow of traffic and improper tag. During the traffic stop, an officer reported smell ing burnt marijuana. Police found no marijuana during a search of the vehicle, but noticed a ship ping receipt for package sent from Decatur to an address in Charlotte, N.C. Suspecting the package might contain narcotics, Braselton police contacted police in Charlotte about the incident. •burglary at a Henry Street address, where more $1,200 in electronics and jewelry was stolen from a residence. A rear door of the residence was pried open. •simple battery at a Cherry Drive address, where police responded to an adult pushing a juvenile. When police arrived at Zion Baptist or less of marijuana, possession of tools for the commission of a crime and failure to keep drugs in their original container. Bolen was charged with pos session of an ounce or less of marijuana. HOSCHTON ARREST The Hoschton Police Department made the following arrest: •Jesus Aurelio Andrada-Perez, 26, 100 Hanover Place, Apt. 147, Athens, forgery in the sec ond degree and driving while unlicensed or with an expired license. HOSCHTON INCIDENTS The following incidents were reported to the Hoschton Police Department last week: •deer struck by a motorist on Ga. Hwy. 53. •animal compliant at a Walnut Street address, where a woman approached an officer on patrol and told him that she was mov ing her dog to another residence. Church, the 13-year-old victim said he was rough housing with two other juveniles. The father of the two juveniles pushed him against a vehicle and pushed him down to the ground. The victim told police the adult said, “You want to see how it is for someone bigger than you to pick on you.” Police said the offender was gone when they arrived. •entering an auto with intent to commit a theft or felony at Chateau Elan. A Toccoa woman said some one broke into her vehicle and stole a portable GPS unit. •theft by taking at the Golden Pantry on Ga. Hwy. 53, where an employee said a man entered the store and stole an 18-pack of beer. Police couldn’t find the suspect. •domestic dispute at a Legislative Lane address, where a man told Braselton police that his girlfriend’s ex-husband threatened him with a gun. The Llowery Branch man was sitting on the front porch of a Legislative Lane residence when police arrived last week. The ex- husband told police that he told his ex-wife she could come to the resi dence to separate Christmas items. The ex-husband said he told his ex-wife to not bring her boyfriend, due some past disputes, according to an incident report. Police said the ex-husband told them he went to the bedroom to get his gun, but the boyfriend left the house. Several other people in the house said the ex-husband didn’t pull the gun on the boyfriend, police said. Police made no arrests in the case, due to lack of evidence. Meanwhile, the officer received a call from dispatch informing him the property’s landlord had called to say the dog was supposed to be off the property the previous day. When the officer returned to the residence, the woman was gone. Neighbors told the officer the dog barks aggressively when they are outside. The officer told the landlord that the matter is a civil issue. The officer told everyone involved to call police should the dog get loose. •burglar alarm at a Pearl Industrial Blvd. address, where police said there were no signs of forced entry. •burglar alarm at a Towne Center Parkway address, where police said there were no signs of forced entry. •burglar alarm at a West Broad Street address, where an officer walked through the business with its owner. Nothing was reported missing or out of place. Recycle! With nearly 400 people in attendance, the 2007 festival of Trees to benefit Challenged Child and friends brought in more than $185,000. Challenged Child and friends is an early intervention center which offers therapeutic services to children in Northeast Georgia, ages six weeks to six years, who have a wide range of disabilities, special needs, and at-risk con ditions alongside their typically developing peers. Children at Challenged Child and friends come from Banks, Barrow, Dawson, forsyth, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison, and White counties. The fund-raiser featured live and silent auctions of trees, wreaths, art, wine and jewelry. for the third year, Dahlonega jeweler, Thomas Scanlin, owner of Studio Jewelers, handcrafted special jewelry for the auction. This year’s pieces were titled “Hugs and Kisses” and included a platinum and diamond necklace and set of earrings which not only look like the X’s and O’s of a hug and kiss, but also resemble the child at the top of the Challenged Child and friends brandmark. The auction of the three pieces of jew elry Scanlin donated raised more than $33,000 for the charity. The event was hosted by Bob and Red Buisson at their 75-acre property on the shores of Lake Lanier. The Buissons opened their home to some of the guests for the Noel Party, a special preview event. At the gala auction on the property’s barn, a four-story New England-style structure, guests were treated to fine wines such as Nickel & Nickel’s 2004 Branding Iron and Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville, all donated by a mem ber of the board of directors. The art auction featured works by local artists Pris Butler, Bob White, Prank Norton, Cheryl Hardin, Ann Brodie Hill, Jose Portillo, Anita Elder, and Mary Hart Wilheit, as well as many others. Philip Wilheit served as auctioneer. Some of the trees and wreaths, which were all decorated by local businesses and friends of Challenged Child and friends, sold for more than $1,000. Call 706-367-5233 Hoschton police find drugs, several guns in local home Two Barrow County Sheriff’s deputy vehicles were struck by a motorist on 1-85 on Thursday in Braselton, according to the state patrol. Troopers said Pamela Lynn Gilbert, Hoschton, was traveling on 1-85 northbound near Ga. Hwy. 211, when she tried to avoid hitting another vehicle in front of her. Gilbert then struck two sheriff deputy vehicles that were sitting in the median of the interstate. The state patrol said there were no injuries and no extensive damages to the vehicles.
