NOT THIS WAY

Basketball “ continued from page IB
running it well. “We want to be
more consistent and that’s what
they’re doing. They are improving
defensively and offensively. They’re
improving in their practice effort.
All those things go together to
move us towards what we want to
achieve.”
Bollier said his team has made
progress in several areas over the
past week.
“All the little things are improv
ing,” he said. “Basketball wise we’re
not turning the ball over as much,
we’re shooting higher percentage
shots. From a team standpoint, our
guys are more united than they were
two weeks ago. As we sit today, we
are in good shape. We’re not where
we want to be yet, but we are doing
all right. The kids have worked
really hard this week. We’ve had two
excellent practices and we just want
to keep building on that.”
The Hawks travel to Kentucky
this week to play in the Toyota of
Hopkinsville Christmas Invitational.
Bollier said the tournament is a
chance to be together as a team and
be involved in competition that is
different from regular season play.
“The main thing we want to do
is continue to build on what we’re
building right now,”” he said. “”We
want to be a united team that makes
great effort with great attitude and
plays the game of basketball the way
that is best for us.”
Despite a rough start to the sea
son, Bollier said his boys believe
they can have a winning season and
are working to overcome the adver
sity they have faced.
“I think it’s a collective effort,”
he said. “I really think that all of
the players that are involved in our
program are growing. Not only
in their basketball skills, but also
in their character. You’re bringing
some young men from different
backgrounds, different schools and
putting them together and they’re
starting to become united for a pur
pose. Our goal is to be best at the
end of the season and we’re taking
steps in that direction.”
Mill Creek’s next regular season
game will be January 2 at Norcross.
Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The next
home game will be on January 4 as
the Hawks face the Eagles of Collins
Hill. Game time is scheduled for
7:30 p.m.
Wrestling
Hawks take eighth at Brookwood Inv.
The Mill Creek Hawks wres
tling team continues to gain
experience and improve as they
move further into the season. Last
week, the team finished eighth
in the Brookwood Christmas
Invitational.
Billy Anderton finished first in
the 135 lb. class, and has an over
all record this season of 19-1.
Augustus Appling finished fourth
in the 125 lb. class. Nick Voss,
while not placing at Brookwood,
is 15-1 overall in the 152 lb.
class.
Mill Creek wrestling coach
David Landis says his team is
getting better, and gaining more
experience with each passing
match.
“Of course I would have like
some more guys place, but we
won nine matches the first round
and are still improving,” Landis
said. “I think once the holidays
are over and we get into the latter
part of the season, we will do bet
ter (and have) more experience.
We are still a fairly young team,
but we have some excellent older
wrestlers that will do well all
season.”

The Hawks’ next event is sched
uled for this weekend, as they’ll
travel to Meadowcreek for the
Varsity County tournament, which
begins Friday. Last year, the team
finished 13th in the event, with
four wrestlers placing, including
Billy Anderton in sixth in the 130
lb. class, and Nick Voss in sixth in
the 135 lb. class.

the team, his athletes are taking
strides in developing a program
that is beginning to get attention
from around the state.
“Last year, we had one All-

said. “This year, we hope to
have anywhere from two to six,
depending on how well we swim
and dive in the Gwinnett County
and State Championship Meets.
Our team goal is to finish in the
top two or three at the Gwinnett
County Championship Meet and
to break into the top 6 at the
State Championship Meet. We
will need a number of swimmers
and divers to step up to the chal
lenge.
“We hope that we can continue
to improve and perhaps one day,
bring home a significant title.”
