Panthers in search of second straight state duals spot
Top two teams at Area 8-AAAA duals this
weekend will advance to state meet in Macon
BY ALLEN LUTON
The Jackson County wrestling
team is heading into the stretch
run of its season in spectacular
form.
With the Area 8-AAAA duals
ahead this weekend, the Panthers
(16-1) will be looking to qualify
for the Class AAAA state duals
meet for a second consecutive
season. In order to do so, the
squad will have to finish in the
top two spots this weekend at the
event, which will be held Friday
and Saturday at Clarke Central.
According to JCCHS head
coach Jason Powers, heading into
the event his team is healthy for
the first time in weeks and look
ing to avenge its lone loss this
season, which came at the hands
of area rival Dacula.
“When you look back at it, we
lost by eight and we really didn’t
wrestle well,” Powers said of
that lone setback to the Falcons.
“Everywhere we lost, we got
pinned and you can’t win a match
doing that.”
This past Saturday saw Jackson
County head to the Georgia-
Carolina Classic in Hartwell and
come away winners of the event
for the second time in as many
seasons. The Panthers went 5-0
on the day and wrapped up the
first-place trophy with a 38-28
win over Clarke Central in the
finals.
Along with
knocking off the
Gladiators, top-
seeded JCCHS
also got the best
of Banks County,
Oconee County,
Franklin (NC)
and a non-affili
ated junior varsi
ty squad en route
to the crown.
A host of Jackson County grap-
plers made it through the event
with unblemished 5-0 records,
they included Ryan Shekey
(103), Ben Lesniak (125), Justin
Best (135), Kevin Spicer (145),
Andrew Blackwell (152), Ryan
Howe (189), and Jose Carrillo-
Garcia (285). In addition to those
performances, freshman Cole
Metters and Austin McDonald
also stepped up big with big
showings on the day.
Jackson County head coach
Jason Powers said the event was
a good way for his team to tune
up for this weekend’s area duals.
The Panthers should enter the
event with the No. 3 seed in the
area, behind the top-ranked team
in Class AAAA — Eastside — as
well as No. 2 seeded Dacula.
While knocking off Eastside
would be icing on the cake,
Powers said he feels like his
team’s chances of getting back to
state will come down to a likely
rematch with Dacula.
“I felt like there were one
or two matches that could have
swung either way and we ended
up losing them,” the coach said
of the prior meeting this season.
“So if we get those two back
then that’s a victory for us. I’m
hoping we’ll be able to finish
second and maybe even come
in first. Eastside’s the top dog
in the state right now, so they’re
going to be tough to beat, but if
we wrestle a perfect match, then
who knows?”

JCCHS set to host
No. 2 Lady Raiders
BY ALLEN LUTON
When the Jackson County girls
basketball team welcomes Madison
County to The Pit on Friday night, it
will not only be looking to remain in
the sub-region hunt, but also knock
off one of the state’s more highly-
regarded squads.
MCHS is the contest ranked No.
2 in Class AAAA in the latest gas-
ports.com Coaches’ Poll. The Lady
Raiders (13-2) are undefeated in
sub-region play ahead of Friday’s
match-up.
Despite a youth-laden lineup,
Jackson County has had several
bright spots during the first half of
the season, winning eight of its first
13 games coming into this week.
The Lady Panthers have used a bal
anced, up-tempo attack on offense
combined with a defensive philoso
phy that looks to cause turnovers, in
order to get off to the solid start.
But, Madison County will pose a
big challenge for head coach Chad
Pittman’s team. Madison County’s
front court, features the potent trio
of Courtney and Kayla Freeman and
Tiawanna Allen. All three players
are forces in the paint and containing
them will be a big key if the Lady
Panthers hope to upset the Lady
Raiders on Friday.
In Madison County’s only two
losses this season, defending Class
AA state champion Greater Atlanta
Christian used its outstanding guard
play to win by 16 over MCHS. The
Lady Raiders then led Marist for
the majority of the game the next
night before succumbing in the final
minutes in their only other defeat
this season.
Last week, the Lady Raiders
earned one of their more important
wins so far this campaign, by knock
ing off subregion power Clarke
Central.
In boys action on Friday night,
Jackson County will look to pick
up its second subregion win of the
season against a Raider squad that
it should be competitive against.
Heading into this week, the Madison
County boys team had just one win
on the season and was without a vic
tory in subregion play.
Jackson County has already dou
bled its win total from a season ago,
but a difficult schedule has been
tough for the largely inexperienced
outfit to handle. The Panthers were
4-5 during the month of December,
including a sweep of rival East
Jackson.
