Braselton’s Valerie Crawford is
starting the New Year with some extra
cash in her pocket — in fact, it's $1
million.
Crawford, 25, won $1 million play
ing the Georgia Lottery’s Holiday
Millionaire Raffle. She was one of
four people who purchased a $1 mil
lion ticket in the game.
“I don't play the lottery that
often,” Crawford said. “But last year
I did buy tickets with some family
members.”
Those tickets — through the
Holiday Millionaire Raffle — didn’t
win anything, but 2008 would bring
new fortune for Crawford.
It was the purchase of a single
lottery ticket at a Circle K store in
Winder that proved to be the winner.
Crawford’s brother-in-law and moth
er had purchased their tickets at the
Athens Street store just before her.
On New Year's Eve during a phone
conservation with her older sister,
Crawford checked the numbers on
her lottery ticket.
“Oh, my gosh, I think I'm win
ner,” Crawford told her sister on the
phone.
Crawford ran downstairs, where 30
people were in attendance for a New
Year's Eve party. Needless to say,
she was screaming in excitement at
the time.
“I was flabbergasted, I couldn’t
believe that I won,” Crawford said on
learning about her millionaire status
just before the stroke of midnight on
New Year’s Eve.
And with the holiday, Crawford
had to wait until the Georgia Lottery's
office was open. It opened on Jan.
3, and Crawford was the first of the
Holiday Millionaire Raffle winners to
claim her prize.
Crawford plans to use the funds to
pay off her small business, a party
supply store. She also plans to invest,
give some money to family mem
bers, and take several short vacations
around the Southeast over the next
few weeks.
Crawford is also a real estate
agent who enjoys playing tennis in a
women's league and co-ed softball in
Buford. She graduated from Parkview
High School.
“I have two dogs that are my life,”
Crawford added. “I'm definitely an
animal person.”
Holiday Millionaire Raffle was a
limited-time game that gave Georgia
Lottery players their best odds ever
to win $1 million, according to the
Georgia Lottery. The game offered
four $1 million prizes, four $100,000
prizes, 20 $10,000 prizes and 1,000
$500 prizes.

Hoschton
Old sewer pump station to be abandoned
BY KERRI TESTEMENT
A “problematic” sewer pump
station in Hoschton will soon be
retired.
Hoschton is getting ready to aban
don its West Jefferson lift station — a
city sewer pump station that has been
plagued with problems related to
either the pump or electrical system
failing.
The result has been several small
spills that city officials have been
quick to respond to, said Richard
Green, chairman of the city council’s
water, waste and environmental ser
vices committee.
Green said none of the incidents
have required action by the Georgia
Environmental Protection Division
(EPD) — but without fixing the prob
lem, a major spill could be in the
works.
“One day, we’d have a big spill and
we want to avoid that,” Green said
during a called council meeting on
Thursday.
The Hoschton City Council autho
rized the mayor to use up to $55,000
in sales tax funds for the West
Jefferson Street sewer line project.
The mayor will be authorized to sign
a construction contract, once state
approval for the project is granted.
As of press time on Tuesday, the EPD
was requesting another document
from the city and had not granted
approval. Green said.
Dale Construction Company,
Jefferson, submitted the lowest bid
of $53,923 and was awarded the bid
on the project. The highest bid sub
mitted was for $94,000.
The project calls for connecting a
sewer line to the new pump station
in the Brook Glen subdivision and
abandoning the city's old pump sta
tion on West Jefferson Street.
The new pump station will also
be used by the existing Panther
Creek subdivision and the planned
Creekside Village at Hoschton sub
division, to be located on Ga. Hwy.
53, next to West Jackson Primary
School.
Green said the project will connect
the Panther Creek subdivision —
whose residents struggled with sewer
issues several years ago — to a reli
able pump station.
The Hoschton City Council had
previously approved using $40,000
of Special Purpose Local option Sales
Tax (SPLOST) funds for the project.
Design delays from the EPD further
postponed the project, Green said.
The sewer line project initially
called for 660 feet of lines to be
installed; the city later included an
additional 370 feet for the project.
Old sewer lines around the West
Jefferson Street area will also be
abandoned during the project.
Dale Construction Company also
installed the sewer lines for the
Brook Glen subdivision and the city
has been satisfied with the company's
work, said Hoschton planning direc
tor Wistar Harmon.

Planning commission to meet Tuesday evening
The Braselton Planning Commission will hear three
requests when it meets on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m.

property owners, are seeking General Commercial
(G-C) zoning for the property that is currently zoned
B-l (NRC).
The second case is for annexation and rezoning of
one acre in Jackson County. Drs. Desai are seeking
G-C zoning for the property that is currently zoned
B-l (NRC).
The third case is for annexation and rezoning for
1.215 acres in Jackson County. The applicant and
property owners are Jean Hales Beck and William F.
Reynolds. The property is currently zoned A-l and the
proposed zoning is G-C. Larry Beck is the applicant.
The Braselton Town Council will hold a public hear
ing on the recommendations of the planning commis
sion on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 4 p.m.
