Man gets sick, passes out next to device at jail
A Jefferson man being
booked in the Gwinnett
County Detention Center
for driving under the influence got
sick and later passed out next to the
machine testing the level of alcohol
in his blood, according to Braselton
police.
According to Braselton police,
Charles L. Beam, 48, was stopped
for driving on the wrong side of Ga.
Hwy. 211.
During the traffic stop, an officer
asked Beam for his driver’s license
and insurance card. Beam offered
his bank card twice. The officer told
Beam that his driver’s license was in
front of the bank card, according to
an incident report.
While exiting his vehicle for a
field sobriety test, Beam almost fell
to the ground, the officer reported.
Once he got to the rear of his vehi
cle, he urinated in the crouch area
of his pants.
Braselton police placed Beam
under arrest for DUI, driving on
the wrong side of the road, failure
to maintain lane and seat belt viola
tion.
The Braselton officer reported
that Beam threw up for a few min
utes while in a patrol vehicle and
for a few minutes upon arrival at the
Gwinnett County jail.
While blowing into a machine
that detects the level of alcohol in
one blood, Beam threw up on the
device, police said. After a second
breath sample, Beam passed out
next to the machine.
Braselton police said Beam was
turned over to Gwinnett County jail
staff without incident.

Jackson Countv
Committee meets to discuss pandemic flu
Jackson County has a planning committee that is
working to prepare the community for the possibility
of a pandemic flu outbreak.
“Preparation by individual families is essential
because help from the state and federal governments
will be very limited,” according to Beth Heath, county
nurse manager.
Citizens with suggestions for the planning process
are asked to let their elected officials know.
The committee also plans to apply for a grant to get
funds to pay for the cost of printing a pamphlet with
information on the issue. This information could be
sent home with school students and provided in other
areas of the community.
Those who attended a recent meeting were: Lisa
Leedahl, RN, BJC; Shanda Hegwood, BJC; Ashley
Hulsey, RN, Commerce City Schools: Beth Heath,
RN, Jackson County Health Department; and Sonya
Willard, RN, Jackson County Health Department.
The government website for planning information
is located at www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/individual/
