AAA Braves coming to Gwinnett
GwinnettCountyCommissioners
announced last week that the
Richmond Braves will soon
become become the Gwinnett
Braves. The Braves class AAA
team will be moving to Gwinnett
County in 2009. Commissioners
plan to build a $45 million sta
dium at 2500 Buford Drive near
the Mall of Georgia as the team’s
new home.
The franchise is expected to
create hundreds of local jobs and
generate as much as $7 million a
year in revenues.
Commissioners have faced criti
cism from residents regarding the
perceived secrecy of negotiations
between county officials and the
Braves organization. In previ
ous years, the commission spent
over $150 million in secret ses
sion deals. The latest deal, a $5
million purchase of land for sta
dium construction, was not made
public until the press conference
announcing the Class AAA Braves
move to Georgia.
Construction of the new stadium
will be financed with $12 mil
lion in recreation tax funds and
an additional $33 million in bond
proceeds. County officials have
proposed a three percent rental car
tax in the county to further offset
costs.
