The Georgia Department of
Natural Resources, Wildlife
Resources Division (DNR/WRD)
and The Environmental Resources
Network, Inc. (T.E.R.N.) will hold
the third annual Youth Birding
Competition at WRD’s Charlie

Angler awards handed
out by Georgia DNR
Get recognized for your record
catch. Each year, the Georgia
Department of Natural Resources,
Wildlife Resources Division (WRD)
recognizes anglers for outstanding
and state-record catches. Anglers
who catch new state records (fish
with weights that exceed the previ
ous record by one ounce) or those
who catch a fish that meets or beats
a specific weight or length limit for
that species (angler award) are eli
gible for recognition.
Submit a clear photograph of the
fish for proper identification and
length verification (the photo should
at least show the entire length of
the fish and the ruler or tape used
to measure the fish). In addition, a
photo of the angler with the fish is
also required. Complete an appli
cation and submit with photos.
State record applications must be
received within 90 days of the catch.
Information regarding angler awards
and state record fish can be found on
the WRD website at www.gofish-
georgia.com or in the Georgia Sport
Fishing Regulations Guidebook
available at all WRD offices.
Peachstate Speedway
to kick off year Mar. 8
Peachstate Speedway in Jefferson
will kick off its 2008 racing season
on Saturday evening, March 8,
when the National Vintage Racing
Series (NVRA) makes its first visit
of the season to the fast 1/2 mile
oval.
The NVRA is an organization of
owners and drivers of 1929-1968
vintage circle track stock cars.
Entering its twelfth year, the
NVRA “Vintage Thunder” Racing
Series is the largest touring vin
tage stockcar racing series in the
United States. Some of the race
cars are restored originals that ran
on tracks in the southeast in the
‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s while others
are replicas of stockcars from that
era.
The NVRA average from 30
to 35 cars per race with mem
bers coming from North Carolina,
South Carolina, Florida, Alabama,
Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia,
as well as one long-time loyal
member who comes from Delaware
to race with the NVRA.
The “Vintage Thunder” racing
series is just that, “a racing series,"
not a group of old race cars parad
ing around the track. Race fans
witness an authentic presentation
of stock car racing the way it use
to be “back in the day."
The NVRA races five classes
of vintage stockcars: Limited
Sportsman (1930-1957 bodies on
factory frames and powered by
flathead V-8 or inline six engines);
Modified Sportsman (1930-54
bodies on factory frames and
OHV V-8 engines); Late Model
Sportsman (1949 - 1968 bodies
on OEM chassis with OHV V-8’s)
Late Model Modified (1949 - 1968
bodies on modified frames with
OHV V-8’s); and our fastest divi
sion, Modified Open (1929-1968
bodies on racing chassis), many
with over 600-HP engines.
In addition to the vintage rac
ers, the Peach State Super Truck,
Outlaw Late Model (formally
Iceman), Sportsman and Mini-
Stock classes will also compete.
Season passes and trackside
parking spots at currently avail

DNR stocks streams for
trout fishing experience
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources
Division (WRD) is providing trout anglers some earlier-than-normal
winter fishing opportunities.
In an effort to create more space in WRD’s trout hatcheries, fisheries
personnel will begin releasing some of the trout they’d normally release
in March into select north Georgia streams this week.
“We try to coordinate our timing so that many of our catchable
trout leave the hatcheries in March,” explains (WRD) Trout Stocking
Coordinator Perry Thompson. “This creates room for smaller trout to
grow to catchable size. However, due to the drought’s continuing low
stream flows, some of the trout we’d normally hold until spring will
need to be released early to make room to grow our remaining fish,”
says Thompson.
The streams that will benefit from WRD’s early stocking efforts include
the Tallullah River in Rabun County, Rock Creek in Fannin County, the
Toccoa River in Fannin and Gilmer counties and the Chattahoochee
River in Forsyth, Gwinnett and White counties.
WRD and U.S. Fish and Wildlife crews will stock these streams over
the next few weeks. Because each of these streams is open for year-
round fishing, anglers can take advantage of unusual fishing opportuni
ties long before the seasonal streams open at the end of March.
For more information on year-round trout streams, contact the
Gainesville WRD fisheries office at (770) 535-5498. For more informa
tion on fishing in general, visit www.goftshgeorgia.com.
2008 Give Wildlife a Chance
poster contest announced
Teachers and students across Georgia are invited to discover “The
Sights and Sounds of Wild Georgia” and participate in the annual Give
Wildlife a Chance Poster Contest. The deadline for entries in the state-
level contest is March 10.
The contest is open to all kindergarten through 5th-grade students in
public schools, private schools and home-school groups. Participants
enter at the local school level with drawings that depict their observa
tions of Georgia’s native plants and animals. These top 12 winners will
be showcased in the 2008-2009 Give Wildlife a Chance Poster Contest
calendar. All state-level entries will be on display at the State Botanical
Garden from March 22-April 5 in the Garden’s Conservatory.
This year’s competition theme, “The Sights and Sounds of Wild
Georgia,” encourages students to explore Georgia’s many plant and ani
mal interactions and the reliance each has on the other.
Visit www.georgiawildlife.com (click on “Nongame Animals &
Plants” and “Wildlife Education”) or www.uga.edu/botgarden for con
test rules, entry forms and further information.
