Competition heats up for culinary arts students
BY KRISTI REED
After a second place finish in
Gwinnett County Public Schools’
Advanced Culinary Competition in
October, students in Beth Autrey’s
culinary arts class at Mill Creek
High School are cooking up a
recipe for success as they pre
pare for the Hospitality Education
Foundation of Georgia (HEFG)
ProStart State Championship this
March at Gwinnett Technical
College.
HEFG is a non-profit group
whose mission is to help students
prepare for careers in the hos
pitality industry. As part of the
competition, HEFG offers culi
nary school scholarships to the top
three teams. The winning team
will advance to a national competi
tion and be eligible for additional
scholarships.
In 2007, Mill Creek High School
placed fourth at the ProStart
Championships. This year, the
team will compete with 18 other
teams for the top prize.
The main ingredient for this
year’s competition is chicken.
Each team must prepare a main
dish and entree with chicken as the
primary ingredient. Students must
also prepare a starch, a vegetable
and dessert. Each team has sixty
minutes to cook a complete meal
and must do so using only two
burners. Students must also com
pletely prepare the chicken for use,
including de-boning.
Students are judged on prepara
tion skills, professional attitude,
appearance, safety and sanitation,
teamwork and presentation.
Autrey said the competition is a
great networking opportunity and
a chance for students to meet rep
resentatives from culinary arts pro
grams throughout the state.
“They get wonderful experience
and expertise from the judges,”
Autrey said. “The judges give
them constructive criticism. It’s
just a really great experience for
the kids to be exposed to such
exceptional, high level competi
tion.”
Autrey said her students enjoy
challenging themselves and have
already begun practicing dishes
for the March event.
Christina Onody, Laura Mallanik
and Marissa Gauthier competed
together in the October competi
tion. For the ProStart competition,
they will be joined by Brittany
Dixon.
Gauthier said the team is excited
about the upcoming champion
ships.
“And a little nervous,” added
Mallanik.
Gauthier said the team experi
enced some technical difficulties
and last minute menu changes in
their last competition. She hopes
things will go more smoothly this
time.
“This time I think we’ll be more
ready for it,” she said.
The culinary arts program is
part of Mill Creek High School’s
Family and Consumer Science
program. The courses are restau
rant industry focused and designed
to teach students the skills neces
sary to enter careers in the hospi
tality industry.

Construction is well underway at one of Gwinnett
County’s newest elementary schools. Puckett’s Mill
elementary located at 2442 S. Puckett’s Mill Road in
Dacula, will open this August.
Puckett’s Mill is one of three new elementary
schools set to open this fall in Gwinnett County.
The school system currently operates 65 elementary
schools throughout the county.
Puckett’s Mill Elementary will serve as a relief
elementary school for the rapidly growing Mill Creek
cluster. The school joins Duncan Creek, Fort Daniel,
Freeman’s Mill, Harmony, Ivy Creek and Patrick
Elementary Schools as part of the Mill Creek Cluster.
Puckett’s Mill ES will feed into Osborne Middle
School.
Puckett’s Mill Elementary is one of 20 construction
projects being funded through the special purpose
local option sales tax passed by Gwinnett County vot
ers in 2006. The SPLOST allows the school system
to collect tax money through 2012.
Construction at Puckett’s Mill began in December
2006. The total project cost is expected to be $15.4
million. The 162,200 square foot building will have
64 classrooms, two art rooms, two music rooms, three
computer labs, six special education rooms and seven
multipurpose rooms. The school is being built on
26.15 acres off Braselton Highway.
When Puckett’s Mill opens its doors this fall, sys
tem planners expect 907 students to enroll. While the
school’s enrollment will initially be under the 1,331
capacity, school officials said the school is designed
to accommodate future growth in the area.
Duncan Creek ES student wins essay contest
Duncan Creek Elementary student Brittaney Battiste
was recently selected as the winner of the New World
of Coca-Cola’s ‘Name the Robot’ essay contest. The
purpose of the contest was to select a name for the
robot in the bottle works section of the museum.
Battiste chose ‘Fizzybot’ as the name for the robot.
Ten-year-old Battiste entered the contest as part of
a class project. In addition to having her name dis
played at the museum near the robot, Battiste also
won six annual passes to the World of Coca-Cola.
