Engineering students at Mill Creek
High School have begun field testing
their entry for Hover Rally 2008.
The rally, sponsored by the Hover
Club of America, will be held June 26
through June 29 in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Participants from across the country
will meet for four days of racing and
other hovercraft related activities.
Mill Creek senior Shanna Stewart
was one of the first to test drive this
year’s entry.
“Oh my gosh - it is so much fun! I
drove the other one earlier in the year
and I kind of crashed into a bench,
but this was a lot more controlled and
I think I’m more experienced after the
last time,’’ she said.
Stewart said she has really enjoyed
working on this year’s hovercraft.
“It was a lot of fun,’’ she said.
“We’ve built it all semester. It’s non
stop work every day. We had block
scheduling for a little bit, so we had
two periods where we had three hours
to work on it. We put a lot of work
into it.’’
Business and technology education
teacher Glenn Burrows said he is very
proud of his student’s accomplish
ments and thinks they will be very
competitive in the Ohio rally.
Burrows is part of Mill Creek’s
engineering department and serves as
an advisor for the Technology Student
Association, an engineering organi
zation whose membership includes
many of the hovercraft designers and
builders.
For the past few years. Burrows has
guided his students as they have con
structed three different hovercrafts.
This year, the students will take all
three to Ohio to race under the Mill
Creek High School banner.
If all goes well. Burrows hopes the
students will be able to participate in
some of the other hover rally events.
“There are other things that they do.
They have endurance races. We hope
to do that one this year if our hover
craft holds together by the time that
one starts,’’ he said.
Mill Creek’s participation in the
hover rally began three years ago
after some of Burrows’ students won
a robotics competition. The students
traveled to Auburn University for
the regional robotics championship.
While there, the students had the
opportunity to tour Auburn’s engi
neering department. During the tour,
the students saw some students work
ing on a race car for an engineering
competition.
“It’s a great engineering opportunity
and my kids were just lit up by that,’’
Burrows said. The students wanted to
build race cars, but, at over $50,000
per car, it just was not feasible.
Building a hovercraft turned out to
be a good alternative.
“It provides the kids an opportu
nity to go through a lot of the same
basic engineering processes but with
different materials and a different
vehicle,’’ Burrows said. “They still get
the opportunity to race competitively
and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper.’’
The hover craft project allows
Burrows’ students to apply mechani
cal engineering principles along
with some used in aeronautical or
aerospace engineering. Burrows said
building a hovercraft also allows his
students to experience the engineering
design process from start to finish.
“They’re having to problem solve,’’
he said. “Basically they start off with
a set of plans which they modify.
Then they have to take their ideas
and figure out how to make it happen
- figure out the processes for fabricat
ing it. Along the way, they’ll run into
other things they didn’t anticipate and
they’ll have to problem solve their
way through those as well.’’
While it may sound like a lot of
work, Burrows said the students enjoy
it.
“It’s a cool opportunity for the kids,’’
he said. “They really get excited by it.
They get charged up by it.’’

UGA alumni starting
Jackson Co. chapter
The University of Georgia Alumni Association’s Jackson County chapter
will hold a kick-off event on Thursday, June 5, at 7 p.m.
The event will be held at R. McClain’s Restaurant, located at 115 Towne
Center Parkway, Hoschton.
The new chapter is being organized by Danielle Austin, class of 2003, and
Audra Edwards, class of 1995. The chapter will organize activities to allow
alumni to network, participate in community service projects and assist
UGA administration to support the university.
Jackson County has more than 2,500 UGA graduates, according to the
alumni association.

A tragic car accident almost cost
Paul Granzow both legs.
The Wound Center helped save them.
In October of 1991, while fivinq in Michigan, Paul Granzow was in a horrible head-on collision causing injuries
so severe that he actually died on one occasion during recovery from surgery. Since that time. Paul and his
wife, Gloria, have seen more than 65 doctors and have battled numerous complications including severe
wounds that would not heal, making amputation a serious consideration. Fortunately, they found the
Comprehensive Wound Center (CWC} at Athens Regional Medical Center.
The solution was a comprehensive plan of advanced wound care technology and Hyperbaric Oxygen
Therapy (HBOTk HBOT Is a medical treatment in which the patient is placed in a chamber and breathes
1004b oxygen at increased atmospheric pressures.
“We nave been to so many other places and no one was able to do what they did here, ,r says Gloria. “The
Wound Center really was a blessing for us because Paul was experiencing such intense pain.”
"As the leader in the treatment af chronic wounds "Our
dedicated start combines advanced technology,
compassionate expertise and excellent care to promote
wound healing,”
“ Jane Lastrapes, CWC program manager.
