Bonnie Casper
Winder
Bonnie Ruth Casper, 66, of Winder,
died Thursday, May 15, 2008.
She was bom in Gwinnett County,
and was the daughter of the late
James T. and Sarah Stancil Boggs.
She was Christian and was a member
of the Winder Pilot Club and the Red
Hatters. She had been employed by
Winder Finance. Mrs. Casper was
preceded in death by her husband,
Otis Casper Jr.; and a brother, Donald
Boggs.
Survivors include sisters and broth-
er-in-law, Betty and Larry Lewis,
Winder, and Cathy Boggs, Jefferson;
and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday,
May 18, at Smith Memory Chapel
with the Rev. Dee Dillon officiat
ing. Burial was in Barrow Memorial
Gardens.

Willie Mae Maddox
Winder
Willie Mae Maddox, 97, of Winder,
died Friday, May 16, 2008.
A native of Jackson County, she was
the daughter of the late Robert T. and
Mary Ann Elizabeth Jenkins Venable.
She was a retiree of the Barrow
County School System, where she
served as a lunchroom manager. She
was a member of the Bethany United
Methodist Church. Mrs. Maddox was
preceded in death by her husband,
L.C. “Doc” Maddox.
Survivors include children, David
Maddox, Winder, and Cynthia Reed,
Alpharetta; grandchildren, Chastain
Reed, John David Reed, Nathan Reed
and Andrea Reed, all of Alpharetta.
Funeral services were held Monday,
May 19, at the Bethany United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Don
Crews and Richard Lumpkin officiat
ing. Burial was in Chestnut Mountain
Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Jack Townsend
Athens
Jack Richard Townsend, 79, of
Athens, died Saturday, May 17, 2008,
at St. Mary’s Hospice House.
Bom in Spruce Pine, N.C., he was
the son of the late Colonel Calvin
Townsend and Janie King Townsend
and was Methodist.
A resident of Athens
since 1975, he was
the owner and
operator of BET-
Townsend Hearing
Aids, traveling into
numerous areas with
his business. He was
a graduate of Akron
University, Life
Time member of the
Athens Lions Club,
Georgia Associating for Hearing Care
Professionals, where he served as
president and vice president. Also, he
was a member of VFW Post #2872,
Athens Chamber of Commerce,
and the Georgia Federation for
Independent Businessmen. He was a
veteran, having served in the United
States Air Force during World War
II and the Korean Conflict. Mr.
Townsend was preceded in death by
wives, Julene Townsend and Barbara
Edenfield Townsend.
Survivors include children, Colleen
Lewis, Oxford, Glen Townsend,
Monticello, Bruce Townsend, Jackson,
Rick Townsend, Baxley; sister, Wilma
Pritchard, Marion, N.C.; 12 grand
children; eight great-grandchildren;
and his loving cat Katie.
A graveside service will be held
Thursday, May 22, at 11 a.m., at the
Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery
in Milledgeville, with military honors
accorded and the Rev. Will Lewis
officiating.

Phil Wall
Winder
Phil Wall, 60, of Winder, died
Thursday, May 15, 2008.
Bom in Clarke County, he was
the son of Robena Sells Wall of
Statham and the late W.D. Wall. He
was employed by Statham American
Legion and was a member of Sons of
American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Tawanna
Wall, Statham; sons, James W. Farmer
and Jeremy Wall, both of Winder,
and Phillip Wall, Statham; daughters,
Dena W. Wood, Statham, Renee W.
Bridgeman and Sharron W. Kinney,
both of Winder; 12 grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren; a brother,
Dwight Wall, Statham; and a sister,
Lisa Owen, Statham.
Funeral services were held Sunday,
May 18, at Smith Memory Chapel
with the Rev. Frank Colladay officiat
ing. Burial was in Barrow Memorial
Gardens.

‘Woody’ Wood
Winder
Ronald “Woody” Wood, 58, of
Winder, died Thursday, May 15,
2008.
Bom in Jackson County, he was the
son of the late Ralph and Sarah Smith
Wood, and was a framer in home
construction.
Survivors include a son, Jamie
Wood, Cumming; brothers, Larry
Wood, Alabama, Danny Wood,
Oakwood, Jerry Wood, Clarkesville,
Jeff Wood, Loganville, Donald
Wood, Statham, and Jackie McGee,
Tennessee; sisters, Brenda Chestnut,
Dillard, Shirley Rutledge and Judy
McGee, both of Winder; and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday,
May 17, at Smith Memory Chapel
with the Rev. Donnie Pennington offi
ciating. Burial was in Hoschton City
Cemetery.

Marion Wood
Winder
Marion U. Wood, 80, of Winder,
died Thursday, May 15, 2008.
Bom in Daytona Beach, Fla., she
was the daughter of the late Pete and
Pearl Dunahoo Usry. She was a mem
ber of Rockwell Universalist Church
and was a retired fiscal budget analyst
with the Centers for Disease Control.
Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by
her husband, Alton Wood Sr.
Survivors include children, Karen
Huff, Blue Ridge, Carol Eidson,
Amoldsville, and Alton Wood Jr.,
Winder; seven grandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held
Saturday, May 17, at Barrow
Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill
Hayes officiating.

‘Toppie’ Hamilton
Atlanta
Juanita “Toppie” Hamilton, 83, of
Atlanta, died Wednesday, May 14,
2008.
A native of Cherokee County, she
was the daughter of the late Paul and
Ada F. Sumner Bramlett. She was a
member of The First Alliance Church
of Atlanta, and was a retired hair
dresser. Mrs. Hamilton was preceded
in death by her husband, Sanders W.
Hamilton.
Survivors include sisters and broth-
er-in-law, Mary Burgess, Auburn,
Phyllis Bowens, Betty and Jack
Hazan, all of Hoschton; two nieces;
two nephews; two great-nieces; two
great-great-nephews; and one great-
great-niece.
Graveside services were held
Saturday, May 17, at The Greenwood
Cemetery in Atlanta with the Rev.
Kevin Goins officiating.

‘Jim’ Jolly
Jefferson
James M. “Jim” Jolly, 70, of
Jefferson, died Thursday, May 15,
2008.
He was Jehovah’s Witness, was a
master brick mason, avid motorcy
clist, and a beloved husband, father
and grandfather, loved ones stated.
Survivors include his wife, Vicki
Jolly, Jefferson; son, James D. Jolly,
Jefferson; daughter and son-in-law,
Becky and Mark Miller, Auburn; son
and daughter-in-law, Jay and Penny
Jolly, Hoschton; grandson, Seth
Miller; and granddaughter, Samantha
Miller.
Memorial services were held
Saturday, May 17, at Kingdom Hall
of Jehovah’s Witness in Braselton
with Elder Joe Scibetta Sr. officiat
ing.

Evelyn McNeal
Buford
Evelyn Stowe Dunagan McNeal,
75, of Buford, passed away at
Northeast Georgia Medical Center
Thursday, May 15, 2008, following a
brief illness.
She was bom in Ila on April 17,
1933, to John Lester and Hattie Watson
Stowe. A lifelong resident of Georgia,
she retired as vice president from
Warren Featherbone Company after
42 years of dedicated service, work
ing tirelessly while raising four sons
and one granddaughter. Though she
held many titles through the years at
Warren Featherbone, her most beloved
titles were “Mama” and “Nana”. She
cherished her loving husband of 31
years, who was her true companion.
She had a contagious passion for life
and enjoyed cooking, world traveling,
painting, family genealogy, gardening
and animals of all kinds. Mama/Nana
was our “Family Glue” and will be
missed greatly by all.
She is survived by her husband,
John W. McNeal (“Mac”), Buford;
four sons, Greg Dunagan, Gainesville,
Ken and Terry Dunagan, Cornelia, Tim
and Brenda Dunagan, Smithville, Mo.
and Bradley Dunagan, Gainesville;
one granddaughter/daughter, Jennifer
Dunagan and Andy Smith, Flowery
Branch; one sister, Rushia Highfield,
Gainesville; three grandsons, Cody
and Nick Dunagan, Cornelia, and
Lanny Dunagan, Gainesville; five
great-grandchildren, Logan and
Lauren Sivils, and Alex, Andon, and
Ava Grace Smith, Flowery Branch;
four step-children, Patty and Dan
Lewis, Flowery Branch, Norman
and Lynn McNeal, Ft. Campbell,
Ky„ Kenny McNeal, Cherry Point,
N.C., and Sharon and Randy Barrett,
Murrayville; 12 step-grandchildren;
several nieces and nephews; and one
lonely Pekingese named “Princess”.
She was preceded in death by four
sisters and one brother, Louise Brown,
Mary Knight, Estelle Mclhenny,
Clarice Lord and Junior Stowe.
Funeral services were held Monday,
May 19, at Memorial Park with the
Revs. Gene Todd and James McNeal
officiating.

Statham
Ellen H. Burtan, 99, of Statham,
died Tuesday, May 13, 2008.
She was bom in Barrow County,
the daughter of the late Joseph (JS)
and Lillia Casper Holliday. She
was a sales person for World Book
Encyclopedia. Mrs. Burtan was pre
ceded in death by her husband, Nick
Burtan.
Survivors include a brother, C.D.
“Buck” Holliday, Statham.
Funeral services were held Friday,
May 16, at Smith Memory Chapel
with the Rev. Wayde Thomas offi
ciating. Burial will was in Barrow
Memorial Gardens.

Margaret Mathis
Winder
Margaret Mathis, 82, of Winder,
died Monday, May 19, 2008.
She was bom in Barrow County,
the daughter of the late Hiram S. and
Stella Edwards McDaniel. Her first
job was at Carwood Manufacturing
Company and she retired from
Cherokee after many years. She was
a member of Dove Creek Holiness
Church. Mrs. Mathis was preceded
in death by her husband, Jerdine L.
Mathis.
Survivors include a son and daugh-
ter-in-law, Bobby L. and Stacey
Mathis, Baldwin; grandchildren, Kim
Greeson, Michael Mathis, Tammy
Gee, Pennie Mathis and Dustin
Mathis; 11 great-grandchildren; and
two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, May 21, at Smith
Memory Chapel with the Rev. Wayne
Moore officiating. Burial was at
Barrow Memorial Gardens.

Linda Phillips
Braselton
Linda Phillips, 66, of Braselton,
died Saturday, May 17, 2008.
Bom in Jackson County, she was
the daughter of the late Hubert and
Eva Fagen Gunter. She was a member
of Walnut Fork Baptist Church and
had worked in the meat department of
Big Star Grocery before retiring.
Survivors include a son, Ricky
Martin, Jefferson; daughter and
son-in-law, Robby and Ron Goss,
Jefferson; son and daughter-in-law,
Todd and Cindy Martin, Monroe; 14
grandchildren; eight great-grandchil
dren; sister, Kay Page, Jefferson; and
brothers, Donald and Terrell Gunter,
both of Braselton.
Funeral services were held Tuesday,
May 20, at Smith Memory Chapel
with the Revs. Terry Page, Johnny
Knight and Ed Strickland officiat
ing. Burial was in Barrow Memorial
Gardens.

James Henry Hunter, 55, of
Statham, died Sunday, May 11, 2008,
at Barrow Medical Center.
Bom on August 17, 1952, he was
the son of J.T. and Nancy Hunter.
He attended Glenwood High School
in Winder and was a veteran, having
served in the United States Air Force.
Survivors include
children, Briana

Kent, England, Eric
and Kim Gibbons,
Stone Mountain, David and Tammy
Gibbons, Athens, Demetrius and
Ashley Howard, Acworth; sisters and
brothers. Iris (Sim) Johnson, Carolyn
(Henry) Kelle, Vera (Mason) Green,
Mack (Thelma) Hunter, and Nelson
(Pauline) Hunter.
Funeral services were held Monday,
May 19, at Fairfield Baptist Church.
Burial was in Barrow Memorial
Gardens.
Martha Lianne Mason, 40, of
Lavonia, died Thursday, May 15,
2008.
Bom in Clarke County, she was
the daughter of father and step
mother, Robert and Rachel Mason of
Covington, and mother, Patty Bames
Mason, Athens. She worked for Home
Depot as an inventory clerk.
Survivors include daughters. Amber
Mize, Jordon Mize and Hayley Mize,
all of Lavonia; brother, Ricky Mason,
Covington; sisters, Debbie Williams,
Winder, Bonnie Mason, Athens, and
Elizabeth Mason, Covington; aunts
and uncle, Martha Forney, Oxford,
and John and Janice Bames.
Memorial services will be held at
a later date.

Commerce
Judy Bradberry Pafford, 63, of
Commerce, died Wednesday, May
14, 2008.
She was bom in Jackson County,
the daughter of the late Connie W. and
Pauline Hogan Bradberry. She was a
member of Union Baptist Church and
was employed as an assistant man
ager in sales at the Lodge Cast Iron.
Survivors include her husband,
Tommy Pafford, Commerce; sons and
daughters-in-law, Rhett and Jessica
Childers, Commerce, Travis and
Donna Childers, Bogart; daughter and
son-in-law, Tara and Robert Faulkner,
Statham; 13 grandchildren; a brother,
Bobby Bradberry, Nicholson; and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday,
May 16, at Smith Memory Chapel
with the Rev. Donald Clark offici
ating. Burial was at Union Baptist
Church cemetery.

Billy Martin
Gainesville
Billy James Martin, 73, of
Gainesville, died Saturday, May 17,
2008.
Bom in Hoschton, he was a life
long resident of Hall County, was a
member of the 1951 graduating class
of Sardis High School, and graduated
from North Georgia
College. He was a
veteran, having served
in the United States
Army. He was a mem
ber of the Antioch United Methodist
Church. Mr. Martin was preceded in
death by his parents, Hubert James
and Belle Roark Martin; a brother,
Eugene Roark Martin; and step-moth
er, Grace Langford Martin.
Survivors include his wife of 51
years, Margaret Jarrard Martin; son
and daughter-in-law, Wesley and
Greta Martin, Gainesville; daugh
ter and son-in-law, Angela and Nick
Massengill, Marietta; five grandchil
dren; and sister-in-law and brother-
in-law, Norma and Donald Roper,
Gainesville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday,
May 20, under the arbor at Antioch
Campground with the Revs. Greg
Burgner, Whit R. Martin, grandson
of Mr. Martin, and Rev. Dr. Terry
Walton officiating. Burial was in Alta
Vista Cemetery.

May 30 and 31 at Peach State Speedway. Opening ceremonies will begin at 7:00 p.m. and the Survivor’s lap shortly
thereafter. Please meet at the track between 6:00-6:30 p.m. to receive your free T-shirt, pin, sash and other surprises,
as well as enjoy refreshments in your hospitality tent. The survivor’s lap is sponsored by The Pendergrass Flea
Market and the survivor’s hospitality tent is sponsored by The Jefferson Rotary Club. After your lap, you are invited
back to the hospitality tent for more refreshments; visit with other survivors and to enjoy the relay in comfort. Your
