A professional statewide
cycling event in May
that included a stop in
Braselton had a direct economic
impact of $38.6 million in Georgia,
according to organizers.
The sixth annual Tour de Georgia
presented by AT&T surpassed the
2007 economic impact number of
$27 million by 40 percent.
The 2008 Tour de Georgia is rec
ognized as America’s premier, pro
fessional cycling event and rolling
festival that covered more than 600
miles and seven days. The economic
impact was determined using data
collected by crowd intercept surveys
at all start and finish host venue
locations.
Economic indicators included
assessment of dollars spent by
visitors (residents of the area not
included) for meals, lodging, trans
portation, retail and miscellaneous
recreation. The analysis of crowd
sizes was determined by the Georgia
State Patrol and local law enforce
ment estimates.
While the attendance figures for
2008 were down 20 percent from
last year, more than 400,000 this
year as compared to 515,000 in
2007 and 500,000 in 2006, spend
ing was up significantly during the
event.
Road Atlanta in Braselton hosted
the team time trial for the Tour de
Georgia.
“We were delighted to host the
team time trial stage of the Tour de
Georgia presented by AT&T. For a
first time event — and on a Thursday
— we were extremely pleased with
the spectator turnout and the event
overall,” said Road Atlanta president
Geoff Lee, regarding an estimated
attendance of 20,000 fans at Stage
4.
“A majority of these very enthu
siastic cycling fans were making
their first visit to Road Atlanta and
obviously had a good time,” he said
in a statement. “From a marketing
standpoint, the tour was very suc
cessful for us. We hope these new
fans will come back for our major
events like the 11th annual Petit Le
Mans Oct. 1-4.”
In addition, the Tour de Georgia
presented by AT&T set a record in
2008 for funds raised for its ben
eficiaries, the Aflac Cancer Center
and Blood Disorders Service of
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and
the Georgia Cancer Coalition. With
donation pledges from tour sponsors
and generated by ancillary events
throughout race week, the Tour de
Georgia was able to donate more
than $500,000 for its charities, dou
bling what had been done in the past
five years.

Overall, gains made in statewide CRCT results
BY KERRI TESTEMENT
Despite recent concerns about two exams
on a state-mandated test, students made
improvements in most areas of the Criterion-
Referenced Competency Tests, according to
initial results.
The Georgia Department of Education pro
vided the preliminary findings of the CRCT
results to school systems last week following
media requests.
However, state officials continued to stress
that the results are preliminary, and that sys
tem and school-level results are not availa
ble. Official CRCT state results are expected early this
month.
“The overall news is good: In areas where the new
curriculum has been implemented for more than one year,
we are seeing steady improvement at a state level,” state
department of education spokesperson Dana Tofig wrote
to school superintendents last week.
Areas where the state's new curriculum, the Georgia
Performance Standards (GPS), have been implemented for
at least two years show gains on the CRCT.
Those areas include English/Language Arts
for grades 1-8, reading for grades 1-8, science
in grades 3-7, and math in grades 1, 2, 6 and
7.
But in areas where the GPS was taught for
the first time during the recent school year,
scores were lower.
In math, 37 percent of eighth graders failed
the exam. State results also show that about 30
percent of third, fourth and fifth graders also
didn't meet standards on the CRCT.
State education officials later tossed out the
results for sixth and seventh grade social studies, after 75
percent of seventh graders and 71 percent of sixth graders
failed the exam.
State schools superintendent Kathy Cox has said the
lower math scores were due to the switch in the curricu
lum. She said the social studies results were invalidated
because they were “implausibly low.” Cox also said the
action only affected sixth and seventh grade social studies
results and not other subjects on the CRCT.
