Help, not hypocrisy
This Christmas, Chloe was
very excited. Looking at all
the lights and decorations on
the tree, seeing all the gifts
beneath it wrapped in beauti
ful, bright paper ... well, it
was just too much for her to
resist.
Amy and I learned that Chloe
took a gift out from under the
tree, tore it open and hid it
somewhere in her room.
How did we learn that?
Cole ratted her out.
Cole came to us, the expres
sion on his face that of righ
teous indignation. He told us
that Chloe had taken a gift
from under the tree and hidden
it in her room.
We confronted Chloe and
she produced the pilfered
package. Situation resolved ...
for about 10 minutes.
Cole walked into the living
room. The expression on his
face was no longer that of
righteous indignation, it was
that of remorse. In his hands
he carried the package that
HE had taken from under the
Christmas tree, torn open and

hidden under his bed. It seems
he conveniently forgot about
that when he was telling on
his sister.
Yet somewhere along the
way, it got to him. Maybe it
was the guilt of having taken
a gift. Perhaps he recognized
the hypocrisy of his actions.
Regardless, during those 10
long minutes with his con
science, Cole realized it was
wrong for him to tell on his
sister when he had done the
same thing.
That was something Jesus
addressed during his minis
try. In Matthew 7:3-5, Jesus
warned against the hypocrisy
of focusing on someone else’s
sin when you’re struggling
against the same sin, yourself.
Jesus likened such behavior
to offering to remove a speck
from another’s eye when you
have a log in your own. His
solution was to first remove
the log from your own eye,
which would then allow you to
see clearly enough to help the
other person remove the speck
from theirs.
This is what sin does. It
distorts our view. It warps
our perception. It causes us to
focus on what OTHERS are
doing, rather than focusing on
what WE should be doing.
What we should be doing is
asking Christ to help us deal
with our own sins, first. Then
— and only then — if we are
so led by the Holy Spirit, can
we help someone else who’s
struggling with that same type
of sin. This is not hypocrisy,
but help. We help others find
victory over their sin because
Christ has first helped us be
victorious over our own.
