Gunshot victim
suspected of
embezzlement
By Katie Cofer
A Barrow County woman who shot herself while author
ities attempted to arrest her Jan. 21 is suspected of taking
hundreds of thousands of dollars over a number of years
from the Gainesville car dealership where she worked.
According to Gainesville Police Department spokesper
son Sgt. Kevin Holbrook, the department began an investi
gation into theft and possible embezzlement by the Carriage
Automotive Group off Browns Bridge Road in Gainesville.
The investigation led to a warrant being taken out against
Belen Rubio, 57, for felony theft by taking. Rubio was a
longtime employee of the Carriage Automotive Group.
Hall County deputies were the agency in charge of serv
ing the warrant at Rubio's residence off Hwy. 211 near
Dooley Town Road in Statham with assistance from Barrow
County deputies.
On the Barrow County Sheriff's Office Facebook page,
a post states deputies knocked on the front door (and) they
heard a loud bang and realized quickly the loud bang was a
gunshot. When they entered the home, they found a female
on the couch with a gunshot to the head area that was pos
sibly self-inflicted.
An ambulance and fire (truck) arrived on the scene and
the female, who was still alert and not deceased, was taken
to an area hospital, the post states.
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office notified the Georgia
Bureau of Investigation for an independent investigation.
Rubios's obituary on the Lawson Funeral Home website
states that she died on Saturday, Jan. 23.

When Dr. Dale Threadgill, retired Dean of Engineering at UGA, was diagnosed
with atrial fibrillation (AFib), he elected to receive treatment from a new heart
lab at Athens Regional Medical Center. The new technology allows doctors to
dramatically reduce radiation exposure by close to 90%. “I’m an engineer, I like to
look at doing things differently,” said Dr. Threadgill, “I have always felt that Athens
Regional provided excellent healthcare. That’s why, when I retired, I elected to
remain close to Athens.”
