Local 4-H Members compete at State Horse Show
Compete at horse show
Ten Local Jackson County youth recently earned high honors at the University of Georgia Extension State 4-H Horse show at the
Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry.

high honors at the Univer

State 4-H Horse show at
the Georgia National Fair
grounds in Perry.
The local Jackson Coun
ty participants represented
the Peace of Heaven Farms
under trainer/leader Shan
non Loven-Thompson.
Cloverleaf division par
ticipants were Ruby Ander
son Josie Fuller, and Alaina
Thompson.
Junior division partici
pants were Kayden Barnett,
Jessica Strong, Campbell
Turner. Jacey Anderson,
Ashlyn Nunnally and Gra-
cie Wilson.
LeeAnn Loven represent
ed in the senior division.
All of the participants
competed in a hunt seat
English classes and com
pleted the 4-H Horseman
workbook and required
written educational test,
which was calculated into
their overall scoring. Addi
tionally, Anderson, Thomp
son and Campbell rode in
the stock seat (Western Rid
ing) contest.
“These kids are so amaz
ing,” said Loven-Thomp
son. “Jackson county
should be very proud of
how well these kids rep
resented our county. They
have worked hard all year
to prepare their horses/
ponies for this competition.
I’m delighted to see young
kids so dedicated to the care
and training of their ani
mals and rewarded with all
the ribbons and awards they
brought home.”

horsemanship, fourth place
cloverleaf hunter under sad

dressage, fifth place clover
leaf stock seat showman
ship, sixth place cloverleaf

walk-jog.

move on to represent Team
Georgia 4-H in Southern
Regionals in Perry. Turn
er, Wilson, Strong, Barnett
and Loven will compete
against top qualifiers from
13 states.
All of the Peace of Heav
en participants practice-ride
all year and prior to the start
of state attend a week long
intensive training session to
polish their skills.
The 4-H Horse Program
is a youth development pro
gram offered by the UGA
College of Agricultural and
Environmental Sciences.
Youth from all 50 counties
in Georgia participated.
Officer team gears up for new year
The 2017-18 West Jackson Middle School FFA Officer Team kicked off the first event of the year with
a leadership retreat. This year’s officer team includes: president Jesse Cronic, vice president Michael
Howard, secretary Savannah Page, treasurer Morgan McDaniel, reporter Lilly Farmer, sentinel Tray
Gooch, chaplain Joseph Ledford, historian Tiffany Holly and junior representative Austin Robertson.

sor April Davis’ family’s lake house in Lincolnton.

ened their leadership skills at a leadership retreat on June
26-29.
The 2017-18 officer team includes president Jesse Cron

sentinel Tray Gooch, chaplain Joseph Ledford, historian

This was the first event of their year of service, and the

WJMS FFA Officer Team used this time to learn about their
roles as officers and leaders in the organization as well as
making plans for the year. While at the retreat, the officer
team completed the year’s calendar of events, organized
the Program of Activities, participated in team building
initiatives, and set goals for themselves and the WJMS FFA
Chapter.
“The officer retreat is the first time the new WJMS FFA
officer team had the opportunity to work together, and it is
essential for planning the upcoming year’s events,” accord
ing to WJMS FFA advisor April Davis.

family’s lake house on Clark Hill Lake in Lincolnton.
