Barrow Historical Society gets grant
By LeAnne Akin
The Barrow County Historical Society
has received a $1,275 grant from the Ath
ens-Area Junior Board of the Watson-Brown
Foundation.
The award presentation was officially
made July 6 when the Barrow County His
torical Society Board of Trustees convened
in the Barrow County Historic Courthouse
conference room for its July meeting.
Historical Society President Ray Mattison
accepted the check from Watson-Brown
Foundation Athens Area Junior Board
members Austin Montecalvo, who served
as the Junior Board parliamentarian, and
Katie Burdick, who joined fellow Junior
Board members Mabel Tie and Jack Bull
ock on an April on-site visit to the Barrow
County Museum.
The Junior Board is advised by Ashleigh
Oatts. who serves as Education Coordinator
of the T.R.R. Cobb House and joined in
the award presentation. The officers and
trustees attending the meeting gathered for
a group photograph to celebrate the grant
award. According to a news release, the
partially-funded project enhances the Bar-
row County Historical Society’s mission
of preserving and protecting the county’s
historical heritage by adding an improved
means of making available the informa
tion, photographs and artifacts of the past.
Placement of a TV monitor in the museum’s
entry room or its larger display room would
allow for a scrolling PowerPoint display to
also highlight upcoming local and region
al events, spotlight exhibits and showcase
special features and significant historical
happenings. The addition of the TV monitor
would also add a visual connection aimed at
attracting younger visitors and researchers,
the release said, adding the telling of Bar-
row County’s story in a video format may
entice those visual learners to explore the
static displays in a new way. By integrating
the new technology into the offerings of the
Barrow County Museum, it is hoped that
high school and college students seeking
hands-on work experience will be available
for internships to enhance their educational
experiences, expose them to Barrow County
history and connect them with future volun
teer opportunities while giving them real-
world work experience, the release said.
The historical society plans to connect
with Barrow County schools as well as
Lanier Technical College to let students
know of the opportunity to be involved with
the historical society. The society already
funds the C. Fred Ingram Memorial Schol
arship to Barrow County high school grad
uates seeking to continue their education
in agribusiness-related fields, honoring
longtime Winder-Barrow High School
agriculture teacher and FFA adviser C.
Fred Ingram. While the grant application
related to part-time paid internship posi
tions was not funded, it is hoped other
grants or programs can assist in funding
that aspect of the comprehensive project.
“The scope of the project and its ability
to benefit the community is limitless as the
expansion of the potential of multimedia’s
reach at the museum and beyond is real
ized. Through social Facebook and per
haps the student-assisted development of a
website, making information about Barrow
County’s history more readily available on
the World Wide Web and showcasing what
can be explored inside the museum will be
possible,” the grant application said.
HABA donates to The Tree House
The Hoschton Area Business Alliance recently donated to The Tree House.
HABA gave a $200 donation to the group, which was the second quarter
recipient for the donation. “We wish you much success in your camp next
summer for teens,” HABA leaders told The Tree House after the donation.
