Italian favorites.

If you find yourself craving Italian pizza
or pasta dishes look no further than The
Roman Oven in Braselton. Located in the
Hometown Walk shopping center off High
way 53, a little more than three miles south
of Road Atlanta, this mom and pop run
establishment serves up good food in a
comfortable setting. The restaurant makes
traditional Italian favorites including pasta
entrees, house specialties of chicken or
veal, pizzas, hot and cold subs and calzones.
The owners’ Sicilian background shine
through in the dishes I tasted. First up was
an order of Antipasto for Two ($10.95). A
gigantic square platter arrived filled with
cuts of salami, ham and mortadella rolled
with provolone, pickled peppers, and slic
es of tomato atop a bed of crispy-fresh
romaine lettuce. The dressing didn’t dis
appoint. Surely this would serve a table
of four as a starter. Soup or salad comes
with the entrees, but because we ordered
the antipasto, we chose a pasta fagiola and
minestrone soup instead. Both good soups
especially when accompanied by some hot
garlic rolls.
For my entree. I choose the Penne Alla
Vodka ( $13.95), a classic presentation of
short penne pasta enveloped in a rich sauce
of crushed tomatoes, vodka and heavy
cream. So rich and creamy, this was one
of the best Penne Alla Vodka dishes I’ve
ever eaten. And since my dining partner
was hungry for a veal dish, he had lots to
choose from on the menu ranging from
Veal Parmigiana to Veal Saltimbocca Alla
Romano. He ultimately chose the Veal
Francese ($18.95), which means pounded
veal cutlets browned and served in the
French style with a sauce of white wine and
lemon juice. Again a good choice, as the
veal was fork tender and surrounded with
a delicate lemony sauce. Perhaps the sauce
could have been just slightly thicker. A
bowl of spaghetti with more lemony sauce
came with the meal.
For reviewing purposes, I also wanted to
try their Sicilian pizza, so I ordered the Half
Deluxe ($16.95) pizza to go. With a thick
and airy crust of more than one-inch deep,
my big rectangle of pizza was covered on
one half with cheese only while sausage,
pepperoni, onions, mushrooms and more
covered the other half. Crunchy and tasty
even the next day.
Before leaving, we had to check out the
desserts so we ordered one serving of the
traditional Italian favorite Tiramisu ($5.50)
and two cannoli rolls ($2.95). The large
square of fluffy Tiramisu was good, but the
cannoli were exceptional. The crispy tubes
of fried dough were filled with a thick and
delicious creamy ricotta filling. Other din
ers rave about those cannoli too according
to their online reviews!
The dining room has seating in booths
or tables. And take note: The Roman Oven
does not serve any alcoholic beverages.
The owners do however allow diners to
bring in their own bottles of wine or beer
(which they can also purchase at the liquor
store in the same shopping center). And
they furnish the glasses too.
Thursday evenings are Trivia Nights and
the place filled up quickly after 6:30 p.m.
A lunch menu is served Mondays through
Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.,
includes offerings ranging from pizza slices
and soup combos, Italian pasta entrees such
as stuffed shells or spaghetti and meatball,
or 6-inch sub combos with drinks. Com
plete catering trays of Italian specialties are
also available. There’s a small children’s
menu. too.
