Learning about innovative gardening
Jackson County School System teachers were among those visiting UGA’s Green Roof Garden
during a week-long Math & Science Partnership grant workshop July 18. The Green Roof Garden on
top of UGA’s Geography-Geology building features a variety of fruits and vegetables and an herb
garden.
Braselton area students
make GSUpresident’s list
Braselton area students were among those named to the
spring 2017 president’s list at Georgia State University.
They included:
•Ashlee Edwards, of Hoschton.
•Alexandria Heenan, of Hoschton.
•Anna Oroian, of Hoschton.
•Cara Smith, of Jefferson.
•Emily Pace, of Jefferson.
•Julia Richards, of Braselton.
•Logan Dumanowsky, of Braselton.
•Michelle Pak. of Hoschton.
To be eligible for the president’s list, students must earn a
4.0 GPA for the semester and complete at least nine semes
ter hours of academic credit with no incompletes.

State dean’s list
Twelve Braselton area students made the spring 2017
dean's list at Georgia State University. They included:
•Andres Aristizabal of Braselton.
•Alexandra Vazquez Melendez of Hoschton.
•Bianca Robinson of Braselton.
•Cameron Cowen of Hoschton.
•Erin Goss of Hoschton.
•Erin Shaw of Hoschton.
•Hilary Bradford of Jefferson.
•Janee’ Marshall of Hoschton.

•Keyshla Negron of Hoschton.
•Tara Head of Braselton.
•Zachary Grant of Hoschton.
To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a 3.50
GPA for the semester and complete at least nine semester
hours of academic credit with no incompletes.
Maxwell plans to attend
Oglethorpe University
Kyle Maxwell, of Hoschton, is among over 370 accepted
students who plan to attend Oglethorpe University.
Classes begin Aug. 21.
Hoschton students
made Shorter dean’s list
Hoschton residents were recently named to the dean’s list
at Shorter University for the spring 2017 semester. They
included:
•Lora Bruce, a senior biology major, from Hoschton.
•Rebekah Lang, a senior biology major from Hoschton.
To achieve this honor, students must have been enrolled
full time and have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average
for the term.
Crain earns scholarship
Elise Crain, of Hoschton, won the Ursula Wiegand Schol
arship Fund sponsored by WIKA Instrument Corporation.
She is majoring in nursing at the University of North
Georgia.
Her school and community activities include: ILead, peer
leader, marching band, math tutor and BETA Club.
Crain is the daughter of Gary Crain.
The Ursula Wiegand Scholarship Fund recognizes chil
dren of WIKA employees who have “outstanding” aca
demic records and who are active in volunteer school and
community activities. Applicants for the scholarship must
be a child of a WIKA employee and currently be enrolled or
planning to enroll in a full-time undergrad program.
Winners are chosen competitively based on academic
records and personal achievements.
Tran gets college funding
Corey Tran, of Hoschton. won the Ursula Wiegand Schol
arship Fund sponsored by WIKA Instrument Corporation.
Tran is majoring in biology at Georgia State University.
His school and community activities include National
Honor Society, Interact Club, BETA Club, and JROTC.
He is the son of Amey Tran.

Finding food —
A group of Jackson County School System’s elementa
ry and middle school teachers learned about sustainable
food systems when they visited the Green Roof Garden
on top of the University of Georgia’s Geography-Geolo
gy building July 18.
Instead of the usual flat, gray roof, this building, one
of the main science buildings on the Athens campus, has
2,200 sq. ft. of grass, vegetables, and green space. The
garden has a range of crops, including turnips, radishes,
beets, collards, spinach and carrots, as well as blueberry
trees, blackberries and an herb garden.
The Green Roof Garden visit was one of many activi
ties teachers participated in as part of a week-long Math
& Science Partnership grant workshop, Project EPSSS-
up on the roof
MAR — Enhancing Problem-Solving Skills through
Scientific and Mathematical Argumentation and Rea
soning.
Other topics included entomology, coding and robot
ics, all viewed through the lens of argumentation and
reasoning.
Deborah Riddleberger, science and social studies con
tent specialist for JCSS, and Todd Nickelsen. assistant
superintendent for teaching and learning, coordinate the
grant for JCSS.
It is part of nearly $2 million in MSP grants JCSS
has earned from the Georgia Department of Education,
securing funds in the competitive program six of the
seven times they have been offered since 2004.

to Commerce and Braselton.

Dr. Kolakalapudi received her medical degree from
Amencan University of Antigua College of Medicine.
She completed her residency at The Cleveland Clinic
Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio; finished her
fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at the University
of South Alabama in Mobile. Ala.; and is
board-certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Kolakalapudi
places a strong emphasis on empathy and a
patient-centered style in the care she provides.
When not caring for patients, she enjoys cooking and
spending time with her family.
