Schools roll out new websites
New websites are rolling
out for the Jackson County
School System and its 10
schools.
With assistance and sup
port from Dawn Till Dusk
Technology in Hoschton,
JCSS is using a WordPress
system to provide a plat
form accessible to students
and their families, as well
as members of the com
munity and potential new
residents.
The district website fea
tures a “master calendar”
of school activities on its
home page, www.Jackson-
SchoolsGA.org. The same
calendar can be accessed
from the top menu bar “cal
endar” listing on the district
site and on each of the 10
school websites.
An “our schools” link on
the district page provides
contact information and a
direct link to the websites
each of the six elementary,
two middle schools and two
high schools in the school
system.
The “our school” link
on the individual school’s
websites is the starting
point for information spe
cific to that facility and its
programs.
The “our staff’ link on
the top menu bar of the
district site (and on the “our
school” page for each of the
school sites) takes users to a
master directory of JCSS’s
staff that can be sorted and
filtered by name, location,
department, and position,
and it also provides phone
numbers, email addresses
and teacher website URLs.
All 11 sites also pres
ent social media feeds and
links and an interactive
map of the school system’s
facilities across Jackson
County. School menus will
be updated monthly for ele
mentary, middle and high
schools.
In addition, an online

The Jackson County School System website’s display works on
desktop and laptop computers, as well as smartphones and tablets.

county’s 10 schools, is designed for students, parents, staff and community
stakeholders and features a master calendar for the school system and a

application process for the
free and reduced-price meal
program has been added to
encourage participation by
families in need of assis
tance.
With all students’ use
of personal identification
numbers — or PINs — in
the lunch line and the com
pletion of forms online pro
viding additional privacy
protection, school officials
say they hope participation
by those in need of assis
tance will increase.
All the school websites’
“home” pages feature
quick links for students and
parents: the district site’s
“home” page also provides
quick links for communi
ty members, partners and
potential partners, and
those seeking employment
with JCSS.
A “how-to” message for
using the websites is posted
near the top of the list on
each of the 11 sites’ “latest
news” pages. It suggests
using the powerful search
function on the site to find
information, including
school menus, bus trans
portation information, and
details about the school
system and its partners.
The district and school
websites use similar lay
out and design elements to
enhance their use across
grade bands for elementa
ry, middle and high school
audiences as well as the
general public.
They are dynamic in siz
ing, and are set to function
on a desktop, laptop, tablet
or smartphone.
“The websites are a big
change for all of us and
a work in progress,” said
Karen Bridgeman, JCSS
communications coordi
nator. “We hope they will
provide access to all the
information parents and
partners are seeking, and
we welcome feedback and
suggestions.”

Garland graduates
from ‘pathway
to med school’
Eight pre-med college students from across the
state recently graduated from the Foothills Area
Health Education Center’s Pathway to Medical
School (PTMS) program. Mason Garland, Hoschton,
was among those graduates.
The PTMS program is coordinated by Foothills
AHEC along with community partner Northeast
Georgia Health System (NGHS). One of the largest
components of the 180-hour structured program held
in June is providing participants with 80 hours of
clinical shadowing in primary care offices in north
east Georgia. This is made possible by physicians
who volunteer to host students in their offices.
Northeast Georgia Physicians Group (NGPG) is
a contributor of clinical shadowing hours, donat
ing more than 300 hours of their time to host this
year’s graduating class. One NGPG physician. Dr.
Philip Kimsey, not only hosts students for clinical
shadowing hours, but also serves as research project
supervisor for the program, and serves as a planning
committee member year-round. The Longstreet
Clinic, PC., donated more than 100 hours of clinical
shadowing hours. Planning committee member Dr.
Jeff Reinhardt hosted students for clinical shadowing
in addition to participating in the physician roundta
ble dinner.
Other components of the program include instruc
tional sessions such as MCAT exam preparation,
application process and essay preparation, a mock
interview session with Georgia medical school
admissions representatives and visits to two medical
school campuses in the region.
“The intent of the program is to enhance students’
understanding of primary care while becoming a
stronger applicant to medical school,” said Sheila
Griffin, director of Foothills AHEC, Inc. “The Path
way to Medical School program is on its third year
with a total of 24 graduates.”
