Mini golf plans halted by planning commission
By Kyle Funderburk
kyle@mainstreetnews. com
Plans for a new family
entertainment hub in Bra
selton were denied Mon
day night by the Braselton
Planning Commission.
Representatives for a
property owned by Yel
low Lobster 888 on Spout
Springs Rd. presented
plans for a sit-down restau
rant, miniature golf course
and batting cages to the
planning commission. The
commission voted 2-1 in
favor of tabling a decision
to give the group time to
create new site plans. How
ever, with only three mem
bers present, the motion
failed without three posi
tive votes.
Nick Soko of Mass Engi
neering spoke for the prop
erty owners at the meeting
and he agreed to the con
ditions requested by the
commission which includ
ed placing the batting cages
indoors, closing the proper
ty by 9 p.m., building light
posts no higher than 20 feet
and maintaining and ex
panding existing tree lines.
The property is locat
ed north of the Publix
shopping center on Spout
Springs Rd. and is next
door to the facility which
houses Kids Dentistry of
North Georgia and Wilson
Orthodontics. For some
residents of the Clearwater
Plantation neighborhood,
the development is too
close to home and residents
of the cul-de-sac on the
opposite side of the prop
erty are opposed to having
a putt putt course in their
backyard.
Two such residents
voiced their opposition at
the meeting, with one using
footage shot with a drone
in his backyard to show
how close the development
would be to his proper
ty. The men had doubts
that tree lines would block
enough light and believed
the facility would increase
traffic in an already busy
area.
Soko was allowed a
chance to address the con
cerns. He mentioned how
another fast food establish
ment would bring constant
in-and-out traffic, while
the proposed development
would keep vehicles on
site longer, leading to less
strain on traffic. He also
stated higher light posts
wouldn’t be necessary and
directional LED lighting
closer to the ground would
be better for miniature golf.
Soko agreed to look into
changing existing site plans
so the back of the restau
rant building faced the cul
de sac to the north, but also
expressed how truck deliv
eries between the building
and tree line would not be
something the residents
would want either.
Members of the commis
sion expressed concerns
about not knowing what
the site would look like.
No site-plan was brought
to the meeting and that plan
would have to change any
way to accommodate the
commissions conditions
and the concerns of neigh
bors.
Commission member
Billy Edwards strongly fa
vored allowing the devel
opers time to submit site
plans and a photometric by
tabling the matter for a fu
ture meeting. However, he
couldn’t convince member
Tony Price and the motion
failed despite the present
members voting 2-1 in fa
vor of tabling.
IN OTHER BUSINESS
In other business, the
planning commission:
•approved an application
for a neighborhood of ap
proximately 326 detached
single-family lots to the
south of Duncan Creek Rd.
The property area is 141
acres. 30.6 acres is being
annexed into the town and
re-zoned.
Carroll Daniel named
CM of Empower project
Carroll Daniel Con
struction was named as
the construction manager
at-risk to do Phase 1 of
transforming the existing
Jackson County Compre
hensive High School into
a multi-use facility to be
known as the Empower
College and Career Center.
The Jackson County Board
of Education chose Carroll
Daniel out of four finalists
at its meeting Dec. 9.
Although he wasn’t at
the Dec. 9 meeting and
didn’t register a vote, BOE
member Don Clerici sent
word to the board ahead of
time that he was opposed
to the selection of Carroll
Daniel for the project.
Carroll Daniel is also the
construction manager for
the new Jackson County
High School being built in
West Jackson.
The Empower center is
slated to open in 2021. The
Phase 1 project is expected
to cost $6 million.
OTHER ACTION
In action Dec. 9, the
BOE:
• approved renaming
Lynn Massey-Wheeler as
BOE chairman and Mi
chael Cronic as vice-chair
man for 2020.
• approved a revision
to several school policies,
including student hearing
procedures.
• discussed changing
the system’s high schools
schedules to a 7-period,
A/B schedule so that not
all classes would be held
every day. but alternated
on an A/B schedule. The
move is designed, in part,
to modify student home
work loads. The school
day would be shortened
under the plan, which is
still under staff review.
