GCPS celebrates Computer
Science Education Week
Gwinnett County Public
Schools will host a wide
range of student activities
during Computer Science
Education Week, set Dec.
7-11. The week also marks
the official kick-off for the
GCPS multi-year initiative
to ensure that every student
at every school has equal
access to an “inclusive, wel
coming and high-quality CS
experience throughout their
educational career.”
GCPS has long taught
computer science classes
but is launching its Comput
er Science 4 All (CS4ALL)
initiative to expand access.
CS4ALL in Gwinnett
will allow students from
kindergarten through high
school to learn computer
science concepts, equipping
them with the computation
al thinking skills they need
to be creators, not just con
sumers, in the digital econo
my, and to be active citizens
in the technology-driven
world. Computer science is
now recognized as a new
“basic skill” necessary for
economic opportunity and
social mobility. CS4ALL
will ensure that every GCPS
student has access to these
skills, school leaders said.
“In our rapidly shifting
global economy, learning
computer science is critical
for today's students,” says
Tim Hemans, executive di
rector for Academies, Ca
reer, and Technical Educa
tion. “We believe that it is a
tool that every graduate can
take into the work world to
expand options, no matter
the career path.”
As part of the CS4ALL
initiative, all Gwinnett
County public schools will
work toward providing com
puter science education op
portunities to all students
by the 2024-25 school
year. Computer science in
struction will be offered in
a variety of settings — as
a semester course, a multi
year sequence, or incorpo
rated into other content-ar
ea courses:
• CS Exposure in El
ementary School: Stu
dents in grades K-5 will
gain exposure to comput
er science through STEM
or CS specials, engaging
with ideas related to data
analysis, algorithms and
computing, robotics ap
plications, and the design
process. At the elementary
level, computer science in
struction will be integrated
into core subjects as well
as classes like art. music
and technology.
• CS Exploration in
Middle School: Students
in grades 6-8 will build
on their elementary school
experiences to build a
foundation by exploring
computer science concepts
in one (or more) of three
computer science class
es that will be offered —
computer programming,
secure information sys
tems or interactive design.
• CS Experience in
High School: Students in
grades 9-12 will apply their
CS skills to real-world sce
narios through CS courses
such as introduction to
digital technology and Ad
vanced Placement CS prin
ciples. Students who want
to extend their learning
further can take a special
ized information technol
ogy (IT) pathway, includ
ing higher-level courses in
computer science, cyber
security, game design, web
development and artificial
intelligence.

Mike’s Minute
Christmas Cards
By Mike Day
Do you find yourself needing to take
either a suitcase or a garbage can with
you to the mailbox each day? It is surely a
busy time of year for the mail carrier.
Stuffed in my mailbox are bills that re
mind me that most of my paycheck has
already been spent, tons of advertisements
from restaurants and stores hoping the
Christmas season will bring them some
financial relief, and piles of political ads
with candidates demeaning their oppo
nents.
But as I filter through the heap of un
wanted mail, I find the gold — Christmas
cards.
In the midst of all this stuff, I pull out
the two or three pieces of mail that will
actually bring a smile to my face and a
feeling of love in my heart.
By the way. did you know that the first
commercial Christmas Card was created
by Sir Henry Cole of England back in
1843.1 know this British inventor had no
idea the smiles his creation would bring
to us during the dreariness of 2020. Each
time I open a Christmas card, I get a sense
of what the shepherds must have felt when
they heard the greeting from the angels
announcing the news of great joy - “a sav
ior has been born for all people.”
Some of you have already addressed
and mailed your cards, others of you are
still signing and sealing with hopes to get
your cards in the mail in the next few days.
Let me encourage even those who do
not normally mail Christmas cards to pur
chase two or three and send them to a few
folks you know who would benefit from
opening some good news this year.
I guarantee you they may quickly trash
the “junk” mail, but they’ll cherish your
card placing it where it will be seen and
bring a smile throughout the holidays.
Mike Day is the pastor of Celebration
Church in Hoschton.
