Clara Sykes Banks
JEFFERSON — Clara Sykes Banks, 90, Jefferson, entered into
rest Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
Mrs. Banks was bom in Car-
nesville, a daughter of the late
Thurmond and Inez Epps Sykes
Whitsel, was a homemaker and
cooked at Katherine’s Kitchen in
Pendergrass for some 20 years.
Mrs. Banks was a member of
White Plains Baptist Church
and in addition to her parents
is preceded by her husband,
Lathan Freeman Banks; daugh
ters, Carol Ivester and Donna
Payton; brother, Clifford Sykes;
sister, Bonnie Sue Patterson; and
step-father, Ardell Whitsel.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Lynda Brace, Jefferson; two sons, Larry Banks and his wife
Gail, Jefferson, and James Banks and his wife Debi, Talmo; two
sisters, Joyce Gray, Camesville, and Mary Helen Whitlock, Ho
mer; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one soon to be
great-grandchild also survive.
Graveside service: Friday, December 18, 2020 at 1 p.m. from the
White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Cary Pittman
officiating. Gentlemen honored as pallbearers are Dusty Banks,
Kyle Banks, Chris Stewart, Travis Payton, Wesley Payton and Eddie
Stoyle. Randy Payton will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
Family to receive friends: Thursday, December 17, 2020 from

Mary Ellen Cowart
WINDER — Mary Ellen Cowart, 66, Winder, passed away
Thursday, December 17, 2020.
Mrs. Cowart was bom March
9,1954 in Duluth to the late J. D.
and Elizabeth Craig Bryan. She
was preceded by her husband,
Harold D. Cowart Sr.; and sister,
Jennifer Holland. Mrs. Cowart
was a member of Oak Grove
Independent Baptist Church and
was employed as a secretary at
Liquidation Mart in Winder.
Surviving are children, Jenni
fer Nicole (Tim) Cyran, Gaines
ville, Harold D. (Rachel) Cow
art Jr., Roopville, and Amanda
Ellen (Tim) Chadwick, Talking
Rock; nine grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; and siblings, Angela Vandiver, Oakwood, Ben
Day, Carrollton, and Beverly Steed, Fraithurst, Alabama.

William “Bill” Edward Fleeman
HULL — William “Bill” Edward Fleeman, 83, Hull, died on
Thursday, December 17, 2020.
Bom in Clarke County to the
late Charlie Harry Fleeman and
Willie Mae Sanders Fleeman,
Bill graduated from University
of Georgia High in 1955. He
earned his Bachelor of Science
degree and Masters of Business
Administration from the Univer
sity of Georgia and later attended
the Rutgers School of Banking.
Bill worked with First National
Bank before starting his career
in real estate in 1974 when he
began his own business, A Real
Estate and Insurance. He was
a longtime member of Athens
Area Association of Realtors and Classic MLS and also taught as
an adjunct professor for over 30 years at the University of Georgia,
Brenau University, Truett-McConnell College and Athens Technical
College.
Bill served as deacon and treasurer at First Baptist Church of Ath
ens, where he was a longtime member.
Along with his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother,
Harry Fleeman.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Adams Fleeman; his two
children, Rachel Fleeman and Adam (Marshailena) Fleeman; neph
ews, David (Vicky) Adams and John (Beth) Adams; great-nephews,
Morgan Adams, Matt Adams and Tyler Adams; and great-great-
niece and nephew, Hadley Adams and Walker Adams.
Graveside service: Monday, December 21, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Ev
ergreen Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be James Foun
tain, Harold Thompson, Herbert Lee, Morgan Adams, Matt Adams,
Tyler Adams, Gary Taylor and Tom Brown. Henry Brown will serve
as honorary pallbearer.
Mr. Fleeman will lie in state on Sunday, December 20,2020 from
2 until 5 p.m. at Lord and Stephens, West Chapel.

Bom in Athens on Decem
ber 11, 1979, he was the son of

(Sherie) Lawrence.

Elizabeth B. Harwell
WINDER — Elizabeth B. Harwell, 93, Winder, gained her wings
Thursday, December 17, 2020.
Mrs. Harwell was bom June
25, 1927 in Walton County to
the late W. A. “Cleo” and Inez
Pannell Burnette. She was pre
ceded by her husband, James H.
"Jim” Harwell Jr.; and siblings,
Norris Burnette, Ferrell Bur
nette and Carolyn Cronic. Mrs.
Harwell was a member of Union
Baptist Church and was a home
maker.
Surviving are children, Jim
my III and Barbara Harwell,
Peachtree City, Andy Harwell,
Winder, Jeff and Debra Harwell,
Denton, Texas, Cindi and Terry
Cramer, Ft. Myers, Florida, and Greg Harwell, Hartwell; 10 grand
children; and 11 great grandchildren.

Artis Ray Johnson
BRASELTON — Artis Ray Johnson, 84, Braselton, entered into
rest Sunday, December 13, 2020.
Ray was bom in Hoschton and was a member of Hoschton Bap
tist Church. Ray was a grading contractor in the area for many years.
He was the son of the late Freeman Alexander Johnson and the
late Louella Emmett Johnson. In addition to his parents, he is pre
ceded in death by his son, David Johnson; and 10 brothers and sis
ters.
He leaves behind his beloved, Judy Pless, Braselton; son, Dan
ny Johnson, Cleveland; grandson, Trent Johnson; sister Dorothy
Haynie, Gainesville; three step-children; four grandchildren; and
six great-grandchildren, all of Cleveland.
Funeral service: Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 2:30 p.m. at
Lawson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ricky Thrasher offi
ciating. Pallbearers are Eric Pless, Colt Stovall and Leo Musacchio,
all of Cleveland, Randy Johnson, Hoschton, Greg Pethel and Gary
Vogt, both of Braselton. Interment to follow at the Hoschton City
Cemetery.

Charlene Lambert Quinter Keever
Charlene Lambert Quinter Keever, 91, died peacefully on Sun
day, November 8, 2020.
The youngest of eight siblings, Charlene was born in Coweta
County on April 28, 1929 to Alma and Lee Thomas Lambert. After
graduating as salutatorian of her Grantville High School class, Char
lene moved to Warm Springs to work as an X-ray technician during
the polio epidemic. It was there where she met her first husband,
Alvin Senter Quinter. Charlene and A1 had five children, before his
premature death at the age of 36, due to polio.
For many years, Charlene’s life was completely devoted to sup
porting and raising her children — Vivian, Beth, Deane, Angel and
Valerie (Sissy). Her strong and professional work ethic, creativity
when times were tough, and proud spirit instilled an independent re
silience that remain in her children today. Maintaining a safe, clean,
nicely decorated home, despite hard economic times, was most im
portant. To Charlene,” cleanliness was next to Godliness” ... you
didn’t go anywhere without cleaning the house first. A superb cook
and expert seamstress, Charlene made every occasion seem like a
joyous and rich celebration.
In 1975, Charlene married David Edwin Keever. Residing in Gas
tonia, North Carolina, they were married for 23 years. During this
time, Charlene worked as a dental hygienist or receptionist primari
ly for Dr. William Currant Sr. Ed and Charlene had great synergy in
the kitchen and in nature. It was during this time that Charlene mas
tered her gardening skills and maintained a beautiful rose garden
for all the neighbors to enjoy. Charlene was also a sassy scrabble
player and was always up for a game into the wee hours of the night.
After retirement, Charlene volunteered for many years at Gastonia
Memorial Hospital.
Charlene is survived by her five children and eight grand-chil
dren, Vivian and Phillip Carter (spouse) and their children Jenny and
Phil, Beth and the late, Steve Kiser (spouse) and their children Lau
ra and David, Deane and Heidi Quinter (spouse) and their children
Cheyne, Adrienne and Russell, Angel and David Means (spouse)
and daughter, Eliza, and Valerie and Peter Nyland (spouse) and their
children, PJ and Quinter. Charlene is also survived by 6 great-grand
children.
She was predeceased in death by her husbands, A1 Quinter and Ed
Keever; her parents; and all seven siblings, Virginia, Louise, Helen,
Mable, Raymond, Ralph and Jean.
The family would like to thank the staff at Magnolia Estates Se
nior Living of Oconee County for the compassionate and loving
care provided to Charlene during the last months of her life.
A family memorial gathering will be held in the spring, with buri
al at Rose Hill Cemetery in Winder.

Betty L Darnell McDonald
COMMERECE — Betty L. Darnell McDonald, 81, Commerce,
passed away Thursday, December 17, 2020 at her residence.
Mrs. McDonald was bom in Commerce to the late Valley and Min
nie McElreath Darnell. In addition to her parents, Mrs. McDonald
was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert McDonald; and
sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Bud James. Mrs. McDonald
was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Mrs.
McDonald was the babysitter for many children in Commerce. She
loved to cook, she loved her church family, and would help anyone
that she could.
Mrs. McDonald is survived by her son, whom she loved dearly,
Ray McDonald and Shannon, Commerce; three grandchildren, Mad
ison McDonald and Tyler and Devyn Cone.
Graveside service: Friday, December 18, 2020 at 11 a.m. from
Jackson Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Verlin Reece officiating.
The family request that those in attendance at the service please wear
a mask and follow social distancing guidelines.
In lieu of flowers, Mrs. McDonald’s wishes are for donations to go
into an education account for her granddaughter, Madison McDonald
at South State Bank in Commerce.

Dennis Reed McNabb Sr.
NICHOLSON — Dennis Reed McNabb Sr., 86, Nicholson passed
away Wednesday, December 16,2020 at his residence.
Mr. McNabb was bom in
Philadelphia, Tennessee to the
late Marshall and Annie Belle
Bowers McNabb. Mr. McNabb
was retired from the E.P.A., he
was a U.S. Air Force veteran,
and a member of New Harmony
Baptist Church. In addition to his
parents, Mr. McNabb was also
preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Shell McNabb.
Mr. McNabb is survived by his wife, Sylvia Shelnutt McNabb, Nich
olson; sons, Michael McNabb (Tracy), Colbert, and Dennis McNabb
(Carol), Commerce; daughters, Patricia Hill, Commerce, and Penny
Cash, Commerce; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.
Funeral service: Friday, December 18, 2020 at 2 p.m. from the chap
el of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Revs. David Harbin and Don
Blalock officiating with the interment following at New Harmony Bap
tist Church Cemetery.

Patricia Daily Mize
COMMERCE — Patricia Daily Mize, 76, Commerce, passed away
Friday, December 18,2020.
Bom on April 17, 1944 in
Commerce, she was the daughter
of the late Harvey Jackson and
Alma Stevens Dailey. She was the
widow of Samuel Nathan Mize
the love of her life. She was em
ployed with Goldkist Hatchery, of
the Pentecostal faith, a member of
New Beginnings Family Worship
Center in Danielsville, and served
as a pastor’s wife at several local
churches.
She was also proceeded in
death by her brothers, George Dai
ley and Rado Dailey; and sisters,
Jeanette Boyd, Essie Hammond,
Josie Jones, Ruth Hardeman,
Mayrell Satterfield and Lucille Martin.
Survivors include her daughter, Tracy Bryan, Winder; grandchildren,
April Ivester, Athens, and Brian Chambers, California; great-grandchil
dren, MacKenzie Ivester and Riley Castillo; and a number of nieces and
nephews.
Funeral service: Tuesday December 22,2020 at 2 p.m. at Ivie Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. Roland Arrowood officiating. Burial will
follow in Jackson Memorial Gardens.

Betty Joyce O’Kelley Moore
COMMERCE — Betty Joyce O’Kelley Moore, 86, Commerce,
passed away on Monday, December 14, 2020 at Bountiful Hills.
Mrs. Moore was bom in Commerce to the late George Earl and
Mary Berrong O’Kelley Sr. Mrs. Moore was an office manager for
over 30 years for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and was a
member of East West Church in Atlanta. In addition to her parents,
Mrs. Moore was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold
Henry Moore.
Mrs. Moore is survived by her nieces and nephews.
