Hall earns exemplary school board status The Hall County School District recently earned the Georgia School Boards Association’s (GSBA) 2020 Exemplary School Board recogni tion. The recognition program is de signed to showcase best practices in school governance and leader ship. GSBA recognizes good school board governance to foster educa tional community cultures in order to advance student learning and achievement. The Hall County Schools Board of Education met and/or exceeded the criteria set forth by GSBA to earn the honor of a 2020 Exemplary Board. “Our board of education has con sistently worked hard to support the students and team members of the Hall County School District.’’ said Superintendent Will Schofield. “It’s one thing to talk about being the most caring place on earth and providing rigor for all. It’s quite another to help provide the resourc es that allow teachers, staff, and school leaders to make those ideals a reality.” The GSBA Governance Team Recognition Program was devel oped by Georgia superintendents and board members based on the state board of education’s standards for effective governance to recog nize exemplary leadership. In 1998, the Georgia School Boards Association was one of the first school board associations in the nation to develop a program of standards for local boards of educa tion. The GSBA Board recognition program is a three-tiered program. For more information on the pro gram, you may visit the GSBA web site for awards and recognition. No spectators at Lanierland Basketball Tournament No spectators will be al lowed at the Lanierland Basketball Tournament. The decision comes af ter a meeting with Gaines ville City Schools, Lakev- iew Academy and the Hall County School District amid a rise in the number of positive COVID cases in the community, and with so many schools facing the challenge of maintaining in-person instruction. “Without question, this will be a disappointment for many, as the Lanierland Tournament is a long-held event that for years has brought our community to gether,” leaders from the schools said. “However, leadership from Gaines ville. Hall and Lakeview Academy, feel an obligation to protect the health and safety of the collective com munity.” All games will be held at Gainesville High School and will be live streamed. Additionally, holding the tournament in one location gives local radio the ability to broadcast all games. Safety measures and pro tocols will be in place for all athletes, and an updated schedule of game times will be posted on the Lanierland website in the near future. “Gainesville City Schools, Lakeview Acad emy and the Hall County School District appreciate the patience and under standing of all stakeholders during this difficult time,” leaders said. “We are all excited to be able to host this annual community event in a safe manner un der these challenging cir cumstances, and we wish all participants the best of luck!” Local student receives CURCA mini-grant More than a dozen stu dents were awarded grants from the Center for Under graduate Research and Cre ative Activities (CURCA) at UNG. The annual mini grants will fund 10 differ ent research projects in the areas of psychological sci ence, chemistry, biology, anthropology, physics and English. Among the 14 UNG stu dents to receive a Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (CURCA) mini-grant was Briana Sargent of Bra selton. Sargent, along with Jose Izaguirre Garcia and Lilia Saber with Dr. Ghu- lam Hasnain were awarded for the project: Side directed mutagenesis studies of PyrD and PyrR genes involved in riboflavin biosynthesis. The center’s mission is to promote learning through students’ active engage ment in undergraduate re search and creative activi ties during their collegiate careers. Previously, CURCA awarded its annual mini grants to faculty members. This year, mini-grants were revamped and awarded to student-led teams with fac ulty support. “We realized UNG lacked a mechanism to support student research projects directly, so we decided to refocus the mini-grant awards on students.” said Dr. Anastasia Lin, assistant vice president of Research & Engagement. “The grants will allow students to learn about professionalism and prepare for graduate school and the workforce. Though each student must apply with a mentor, the students get the experience of writ ing a grant and potentially adding it to their resume,” Students wrote research proposals, and UNG faculty and staff members awarded 10 projects.
