Obituaries
Travis Lee Adams
Travis Lee Adams, cherished and loving husband, father, son and
brother, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2023, just five days shy
of his 48th birthday.
Bom in Athens, he was a
son of Douglas Lee Adams and
Lynn Moore Puckett (Billy).
Travis was a lifelong resident
of Madison County and a grad
uate of Madison County High
School.
He was an avid outdoorsman
with a passion for fishing and
participated in numerous bass
fishing tournaments. He was
also involved with the game
fowl community and was a
member of New Hope Baptist
Church.
Travis was preceded in death
by his paternal grandparents, Heiman and Sara Adams; and his ma
ternal grandparents, Bob and Doris Moore.
Survivors include his wife, Alicia Davis Adams; son, Levi Ad
ams; sister, Amanda Adams; and numerous nieces, nephews and
extended family members.
Funeral seivice: Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 3 p.m. at Lord and
Stephens, Danielsville.
Family to receive friends: Saturday, June 17, 2023, from 2 until
3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dr. Virgil Shannon Adams
Former educator and school superintendent Dr. Virgil Shannon
Adams passed away on Monday, June 12, 2023.
Dr. Adams was bom on Oc
tober 2, 1950, and grew up in
Jefferson. After graduating from
Jefferson High School, Shannon
attended the University of Geor
gia where he received a B.A. in
physical education. He contin
ued his studies at UGA and re
ceived a master’s degree in ed
ucation and a doctorate degree
in education and administration.
Shannon made straight As as an
undergraduate and throughout
his master’s program until the
spring of 1975.He met his fu
ture wife, Myra McGee Adams,
when they were both saving as teaching assistants. He earned his
first B shortly thereafter.
Shannon worked as a teacher in Half County and Jackson Coun
ty. He went on to save as principal of North Jackson Elementary
School, Jackson County Middle School and Oconee County Ele
mentary School. He also worked as a county-wide administrator
with the Jackson County Board of Education. In 2000, he was ap
pointed as superintendent of schools in Oconee County. He served
as Jackson County’s school superintendent from 2006 until he re
tired prematurely in 2012 due to progressive Parkinson’s Disease.
Shannon was a lifelong sports participant and enthusiast. In his
younger days, he excelled in racquetball and softball. He was an
avid jogger and could be found on a golf course most weekends.
Shannon was predeceased by his parents, Virgil E. and Mary
Smith Adams; his sister, Claire Adams Byrd; and his brother, Neal
Adams.
He is suivived by his wife, Myra; his two daughters, Sara Ad-
ams-Siskey (Joseph), Bogart, and Leah Adams, Florence, South
Carolina; granddaughter Elizabeth “Izzy” Pippin; grandson Tripp
Siskey; his second mother, Shirley Gently, Athens; siblings, Miles
Adams (Helen), Tignall, Mary Beth Gentry Patat (Bryce), Pensaco
la, Florida; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
Before his peaceful passing, Shannon was surrounded by his
girls, Myra, Sara, Leah and Pearl (the last in a long line of beloved
dogs and arguably his favorite daughter). Shannon liked to joke that
he never met a baby or dog he couldn’t charm.
At Shannon’s request, no seivice will be held. The family kindly
asks that you respect then privacy at this difficult time. However,
they welcome condolences, kind words, or fond memories of Shan

Shannon had a passion for education and felt strongly that read
ing to children daily was integral to then academic development. No
matter how long or tedious his workday was he found time to read to
Sara and Leah nightly. For anyone interested in making a donation

Sandra Lee “Sandy” Brookshire
Sandra Lee “Sandy” Brookshire, 74, passed away on Saturday,
June 17, 2023, after a courageous and well fought battle with cancer.
Mi's. Brookshire was a devot
ed member of Hebron Baptist
Church in Dacula since 1990
and saved in the Sherry Monroe
Sunday School class. She was
an avid seivant of the Lord and
loved sharing stories about Jesus.
Sandy retired from the bank
ing business. She will be best
remembered by her family as a
loving mother, grandmother, sis-
ter and friend to many.
Mi's. Brookshire was preceded
in death by her loving husband
of 21 years, Wayne Brookshire.
Mi's. Brookshire is suivived
by her daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Nathan Rooks, Wind
er; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Sandi Brookshire, Jefferson;
brothers and sisters-in-law, Randall (Sandra) Aired, Bethlehem, and
Donnie (Gail) Aired, Auburn; five grandchildren, Logan (Clara)
Rooks, Emma Rooks, Jillian, Brody and Jobe Brookshire; and one
great-grandchild, Charlotte Lee Rooks, that Mrs. Sandy was so excit
ed to meet and honored to share the same middle name.
Funeral savice: Wednesday, June 21,2023, at 4 p.m. in the chapel
of Carter Funeral Home with the Reverend Rando Acres officiating.
Entombment will follow the seivice in the Chapel Mausoleum at
Barrow Memorial Gardens.

Jacqueline Fortson Brown
COMMERCE — Jacqueline Fortson Brown, 90, Commerce,
passed away on Friday, June 16, 2023.
She was bom on December
11, 1932, in the Shiloh commu
nity of Madison County. Jackie
was the daughter of the late Lee
Fortson and the late Ruth Crowe
Fortson.
Jackie graduated from Ila
High School in 1949 and at
tended Athens Business College
after which she started working
for C&S Bank in Athens.
She married her “high school
sweetheart”, Royce, in 1953,
once he returned from serving
in the Navy during the Korean
War. Soon after they were married, they moved to Atlanta where
Royce worked for the U.S. Post Office and their son, Tony, was
bom. They later moved to Athens as Royce continued to work for
the Post Office while he attended the University of Georgia, and
their second son, Danny, was bom.
Later they moved to the small South Georgia town of Arabi,
where Jackie made many lifelong friends, was a den mother, little
league baseball mom, and a proud member of the Arabi Baptist
Church choir.
In 1969 they moved back to Athens where she was very involved
in Tony’s and Danny’s athletic endeavors and saw them graduate
from high school.
In 1975 Royce and Jackie built a home on their Madison County
farm which they enjoyed until her passing. She was very involved
with the Erastus Christian Church and other community events
during this time.
Jackie excelled as a terrific cook for her family and her com
munity at large. Some of her most joyous hobbies were painting
Royce’s carvings, gardening, crossword puzzles and cooking.
She was very proud of her boy’s successes in the music world
(Tony) and the business world (Danny). One of her greatest joys
was bragging on her boys. She loved her family immensely.
Along with her parents, Jackie is preceded in death by her sister,
Betty Jean Carey; her brother, Dwight Fortson; and her brothers-in-
law; Alton Carey and Tommy Chastain.
Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Royce Brown; sons,
Tony “T. Graham” (Sheila) Brown and Danny (Patti) Brown; broth
er Pat (Mary Ann) Fortson; sister, LeNelle Chastain; grandchildren
include, Acme (Lexi) Brown and Molly Brown; and several nieces
and nephews.
Funeral service: Monday, June 19, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Erastus
Christian Church, 2050 Neese Commerce Rd., Commerce, Ga.
30250. Interment will follow at the Hix Cemetery in Madison
County.

Ernest “Ernie” Floyd Cowart
WINDER — Ernest “Ernie” Floyd Cowart, 83, Winder, passed
away Thursday, June 15, 2023.
He was a native of Frost
proof, Florida, and a veteran of
the U.S. Army. Ernie was a hard
worker and worked most of his
life, retiring after 20-plus years
from Union Camp and then an
other 20 years with Publix in
Winder.
He loved his Lord and was a
proud member of Winder First
Baptist Church, where he was
a former Sunday School teach
er and most proudly a member
of the choir. When they lived
in Florida, he was a deacon at
Shiloh Baptist Church in Plant City. He also drove the church bus
at Shiloh for over 10 years and made many friends every Sunday.
Ernie loved people and making them smile with his funny jokes,
he always had a smile on his face and gave the very best hugs.
Ernie is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ann McSwain
Cowart, Winder; his daughter, Krista Wise (David), Winder; his
son, Darryl Cowart (Kim), Jefferson; his siblings, David Beas
ley, Dennis Beasley, Vickie Barabas and Cindy Linderman; all of
Florida; five grandchildren, Katie Flamm (Nick), Hannah Jones
(Michael), Jacob Cowart, Becca Given (Hunter) and Bethany Bell
flower; and great-grandchildren, Nora Jones, Houston Given, and
one on the way.
Funeral service: Monday, June 19,2023, at 11 a.m. in the chapel
of Smith Funeral Home with Pastor Chad Mantooth officiating.

Jenny Lillian McCannon Haley
DANIELSVILLE — Jenny Lillian McCannon Haley, 52, Dan
ielsville, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023.
Bom on December 17, 1970, in Spartanburg, S.C., Mrs. Haley
was the daughter of Martha Williams Fowler and the late William
Franklin McCannon. She was a clerk with Golden Pantry in Dan
ielsville, where she was loved and will be missed by all her cus
tomers and friends who visited throughout the day.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Natasha Lynn Haley;
step-sister, Deborah McLendon; and step-father, Kenneth Fowler.
Survivors, in addition to her mother and step-father, Bobby Mc
Carthy, include James Kirby Haley Sr.; a son, James (Samantha)
Haley Jr.; daughter, Kayla Haley; sisters, Kerry McCannon, Cin
dy (Mike) Home and Brandy (David) Beck; step-sisters, Phyllis
(Kenneth) Hopper and Yvonne Fowler; step-brother, Carl Fowler;
one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and beloved dog, Mar

was a Veteran of the U.S. Ma
rine Corp, Sons of Confederate

retired trooper with the Georgia
State Patrol.
Mr. Hicks was founder of Sit
Quan Tong, founder of Megal-
odon Gym, Aijan Head Muay
Thai and MMA Coach of Megalodon Gym.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hicks is preceded by a brother,
Joe Hicks.
Survivors include five daughters, Danielle McVay (Robert),
Caroline Hicks (Olivia), Olivia Juarez (Yovani), Isabella Hicks
and Reagan Hicks, all of Nicholson; and grandchildren, Kaylee
Madison McVay and Reece McVay, both of Nicholson.

Robert Henry Puckett
HOSCHTON — Robert Henry Puckett, Hoschton, passed away
on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.
Mr. Puckett was the son of the late Ross and Ethel Puckett. In

brothers and sisters.

Roger McGehee Sullivan
ATHENS — Roger McGehee Sullivan, 76, Athens, passed away
peacefully on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at home.
Roger was bom in Camilla
on December 13, 1946, and was
the son of the late Russell and
Elizabeth Sullivan. He left the
family farm to attend the Uni
versity of Georgia where he fell
in love with Athens and Sandra
Moseman.
Roger and Sandra married,
raised a family, and for 35
years built their own business
together, Riverside Mower and
Outdoor Power Equipment. In
retirement, he was diagnosed
with Lewy Body Dementia, and
Sandra lovingly cared for him in
then home.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Sandra Sullivan; daugh
ter and son-in-law, Paige and Robert Meyer; beloved grandchil
dren, Davis Griffin and Cate Meyer; sister-in-law and brother-in-
law, Patsy and Lanier Orr; niece, Angie (Biyan) Eades; brother,
Harry (JoAnne) Sullivan.
He was preceded in death by his son, Blake Sullivan.
Following Roger’s wishes, no seivice will be held.

William “Bill” Cato Thompson
BRASELTON — William “Bill” Cato Thompson, 75, Bra
selton, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2023, at his residence,
surrounded by his family.
Mi'. Thompson was bom
September 17, 1947, to the
late George Francis and Esther
Pearl Thompson in Atlanta.
He was a member of Hamilton
Mill United Methodist Church.
Bill was a graduate of
Mercer University. He was a
phaimacist and co-owner of
Apothecare Pharmacy until his
retirement in 2015 and often
known to many as “Dr. Bill”.
After retirement he was part-
time phaimacist at Johnson’s
River Place Pharmacy in Bra
selton.
Bill Thompson is suivived by his wife of 55 years, Linda Smith
Thompson; daughters and sons-in-law, Kristen “Kristy” and Troy
Ramsdell and Keirin “Kerry” and Brandon Pagel; grandchildren,
Clayton “Clay” William Ramsdell, Ivey Elizabeth Ramsdell and
Ryder Lennon Pagel; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert “Bob”
and Peggy Thompson, along with their children, Brian, Natalie
and their daughter Aspen Thompson, Kimberly Thompson, Cole
and Anna Thompson; as well as his grand-dog, Gus.
