Gwinnett County
Gwinnett school board sets
FY2024 millage rates
The Gwinnett County Board of Education (BOE) on
July 12 adopted millage rates of 19.20 for maintenance
and operations (M&O) and 1.45 for debt service to sup
port its Fiscal Year 2024 (FY2024) budget. This move,
along with the BOE’s adoption of the FY2024 budget,
will allow for school system employee pay raises.
The FY2024 budget will now include a $3,500 sala
ry increase for teachers, a minimum 4.5% cost-of-living
increase for classified staff, minimum wage increases to
$15 per hour across the board and a longevity step for
eligible employees.
In addition, all eligible employees — including teach
ers, bus drivers, school nutrition employees, custodians
— will receive a one-time $1,000 supplement to be paid
out in the fall. The starting salary for a new GCPS teacher
with a bachelor’s degree is now $55,146. Last year, start
ing teachers in Gwinnett County Public Schools made
$51,646.
“I believe our teachers and employees are the best in the
business, and they have certainly earned this increase in
compensation,” Gwinnett Schools Superintendent Calvin
J. Watts said. “Similar to last year, the district received
information that the county-wide digest would be increas
ing, and our district has earmarked some of the funds to
increase the teacher salary schedule to remain competi
tive with other districts while also maintaining our strong
fiscal health. This will enable us to attract and retain su
perior educators and support staff while furthering the
district’s commitment to improving student outcomes.”

Hall County planners will consider another wedding

The county planning commission is scheduled to hold
a public hearing July 24 (5:15 p.m.) over an agri-en
tertainment venue request for an approximate 17-acre
tract at 3555 North Bogan Rd. from applicant John A.

Hall County
Hall Co. trail officially
opens at Tumbling Creek
Hall County government hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony
Thursday to announce the official opening of the newest portion
of the Highlands to Islands Trail at Tumbling Creek, according
to a press release from the county.
The Tumbling Creek Trail extends the existing trail an addi
tional quarter mile from the pedestrian tunnel that runs beneath
Atlanta Highway to the new pedestrian bridge near the Univer
sity of North Georgia campus in Oakwood.
“It’s no secret that people want to move to Hall County -
whether it’s young families looking to raise their families or re
tirees looking to live out their golden years. No matter your age,
it’s important to be able to enjoy a safe, healthy lifestyle, and this
trail is another opportunity for Hall County citizens to thrive,”
Hall County District 1 Commissioner Kathy Cooper said.
The Tumbling Creek Trail captures picturesque views, with
a tree-lined trail and a wooden boardwalk that stretches over a
naturally flowing creek.
This connection will allow people to walk or bike from UNG
to Lee Gilmer Airport in Gainesville.
Once complete, the Highlands to Islands Trail System will
connect all of Hall County with a 40-mile stretch of paved
trails, allowing users to walk or bike from Downtown
Gainesville to Lake Lanier Islands.
This will be the second proposed wedding venue in
South Hall to come before the planning board in as
many months. The commission recommended approval
of a wedding and event venue on Tanners Mill Rd. in
June.
The Hall County Board of Commissioners approved
that request on Thursday (July 13) and a variance relat
ed to outdoor music amplification.
