Women's Blood Drive
To express solidarity and support for Persons
With AIDS a coalition of women's groups is
sponsoring a blood drive on June 27. AID
Atlanta's Women's Task Force, the Atlanta
Lesbian Feminist Alliance and the Midtown
YWCA have arranged blood donation sites in
two locations.
The coalition reminds the community that
first, there is no truth to the myth that the
AIDS virus can be contracted by donating
blood. The Red Cross uses sterile equipment
which is disposable and donating blood is a
perfectly safe procedure. Secondly, although
all donated blood is tested for the HTLV-III
virus and disposed of if positive for the virus,
members of high risk groups (homosexuals,
bisexual men, IV drug users and women whose
sexual partners belong to these groups) should
not donate blood.
The women's coalition urges all who are able
to support their efforts by making
appointments to donate blood. Appointments
should be made by calling the following:
The First Existentialist Church
Beverly - after 4:00 p.m.
378-5570
Drive hours 1:30-7:00 p.m.
or
The Midtown YWCA
Linda Wiltse
892-3476
Drive hours 3:00-8:30 p.m.
Donations can also be made at one of the
established blood collection sites and by using
Computer No. 840113 contributions will be
credited to the Women's Blood Drive.
Individuals and organizations wishing more
information may call Linda Wiltse, Director of
the Midtown YWCA, at 892-3476.
Child care will be provided at the church and
at the YWCA.

HRCF Contributes
At its spring Board of Directors meeting held
in Atlanta on May 16 and 17, the Human
Rights Campaign Fund made campaign
contributions of $9,000, bringing its current
total to $74,200 for the 1986 election.
Three candidates for the open 5th
Congressional District of Georgia seat
addressed the board and all three pledged to
support increased AIDS funding and to co
sponsor the Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights Bill if
elected. After hearing from candidates Julian
Bond, Jan Douglas, and John Lewis, the board
decided to contribute $2,000 to Lewis and
$1,000 to Bond.
"Having three candidates in a Georgia
congressional race competing for Campaign
Fund support is a clear indication of how far
the lesbian and gay community has come
politically," said Atlanta board member Judy
Block. "We'll be watching this race closely in
the coming months to do everything possible
to see that we pick up a supporter."
The board also contributed a second time to
Ed Davis, running in the California Republican
Senate Primary, increasing the total from
$1,000 to $3,000, and added a $1,000
contribution to the previous $2,000 it had
given to Congressman Tom Foglietta (D-PA),
who went on to defeat a tough primary
challenger on May 20. Congressman Michael
Barnes (D-MD) received $3,000 in his race for
the Demorcratic Senate nomination in
Maryland.
"Barnes is a trusted and vigorous proponent
of lesbian and gay issues," said Vivian Shapiro,
co-chair of the board from New York. "He has
been aggressive in seeking our support and we
hope he wins in the fall."
Members of the Atlanta Human Rights
Campaign Fund Committee hosted a reception
for the board at which over $10,000 was raised,
bringing to almost $20,000 the total the
Campaign Fund has raised in Georgia this year.
Oh June 22, the Atlanta committee will host a
$19-86 Old fashioned,. Red, White, and Blue
Picnic which will feature Congressman Peter
H. Kostmayer (D-PA), as well as several state
and local elected officials.
Steve Glassman, a Baltimore architect, was
elected to serve on the board, bringing the total
number of board members to 19 from all over
the country. The board also authorized the
Campaign Fund staff to rent larger offices to
house its lobbying program, which is
expanding following the Campaign Fund's
consolidation with Gay Rights National Lobby.
